One of the longest streaks of consistently great albums, M.E.S. and The Fall were always an absolute thrill in concert at the same time absolute masters of ego-less understatement, driving rhythm and utter cool. Nothing like it. One of the few bands I still listen to regularly after more than 40 years.

irritates me beyond belief that this is a single note and senseless rambling for most of the song and it is still head and shoulders above anything i’ve ever heard before.

I actually like this interpretation, he's deconstructing the versing of the song rather than assigning it a new meaning. It's obviously about a boy coming to terms with and exploring his sexuality but how this image and feeling is created goes beyond direct meaning and bleeds into instrumentals and language methods. They go hand in hand and he's showing us that

Mark E Smith was a Fabulist, a Munchausen, who seriously conned the serious arty farty types into believing he was a musical phenomena. In fact he was a talentless, bully and a F*****G C**T, whose alcoholism, was an example of his lack of ambition to pursue more interesting drugs. The worst kind of English entitlement that demands that everyone owes him a living just for being utterly dreadful.

Morrissey was on corrie and rode his bike through, which helped with the inspiration but I'd say having a punctured bicycle is a universal experience of youth and the first shot at freedom to explore and then why think too much - actually enjoy your youth, when you can rather than waiting for the burdens of domestic life, parents, work, futute, to be ok.

The band seem very downbeat and world-weary in the interview! I wonder if their defensive imposture above relates to the reception of "see you on the other side" a few years previous? After Baker left. Jonathan Donahue and the band apparently put a lot of themselves into "see you on the .." Expecting a reception or a recognition it sadly never received. The zeitgeist had shifted dramatically between release of 'boces' and 'see you ..' it was largely overlooked and ignored by the press and public, greeted in lukewarm fashion by casual fans determined to believe the band had lost a key component of their magic when David left . Causing the band to spiral into a period of doubt, reappraisal and retreat. When "deserters songs" was released and started to generate praise and interest from the press and public, they couldn't believe it apparently. Believing their moment had passed with "see you..". It looks like there's still a residual wariness to get too caught up in the hype or the spotlight. The unfortunate part is "see you on the other side " is an astounding album full of joy and Wonder. It deserved a much better reception than it recovered. Even now they apparently don't play anything from the album live .
