This fight was crazy. To think 7 year old me beat it and 44 year old me is too scared to try again. I also remember the walk of death that precedes this just to get to the castle. That was hell itself.

This is hands down the hardest boss battle in the entire NES library (as long as you don’t use the crouching exploit). Well done.

I can see multiple instances of this boss getting hit where his shield is down but doesn't take any damage. Because of that, the crouching in the corner approach is okay by me.

I played this game with a friend of mine the last month, and I wanted him to see how much I was struggling with this boss. I practiced a lot alone, but I always ended up losing. So, the day we played it together I showed him the boss without trying to beat him, only spamming B. And I took a piece of his health off, and another one, and another one until I finally killed him. I died from laughter and my friend was confused. I think I will never beat him again.

So basically, spam a and hope it hits him. Great boss design.

Hits by Link: 1) crouch stab 2) Jumping stab at head 3) crouch stab after landing 4-5) standing stab after landing 6) crouch stab after landing 7) crouch stab 8) Jumping stab at head So we learn that in this fight you either want to be jumping or crouching. Also that Shadow Link's hitbox actually cheats! I noticed several times in the video where Alder had dead-on hits, but they didn't register for damage. In particular 1:55 where his sword covers SL's entire head.

Just played through this on MiSTer. Solid game with tight gameplay. I'd rather play this than some of the newer games.

I'm probably crazy for having the oddball games' final bosses (Dark Link in Zelda II, Wart in Super Mario Bros. 2, and Queen Metroid in Metroid II) among my favorites

So I was wondering why there was still 3 minutes left when you got to Link’s Shadow. Mad respect for taking him down without using the knelling in the left corner glitch.

I always found most enemies who can guard in this game have weak defenses with a Jump and an Attack afterwards, that's how I defeated Dark Link, and it proves well for Iron Knuckles as well, only exceptions are those Bird Knights at the Great Palace though, I just run away...

Dark Link be set on 1v1 mode while you have to turn around manually... seems a bit unfair. Although... that Dark Link pause followed by consecutive dodges just makes this fight epic af

I can see why people use the ducking trick. That fight was pretty unfair and extremely luck based. Thanks for going through the trouble of showing us. I only beat shadow Link once as a kid, before I even knew the trick existed. I don't ever plan on doing that again :P.
