Fished 2 days after the rainy storm ended and the Surf Perch bite is starting to improve in Santa Cruz County. There is still a lot of seaweed in general but if you keep looking you will find portions with no seaweed. Used Sand Crabs, Carolina Rig, Circle Hook and looked for “Perchy” areas.

Will you share the name of this Beach? Are you in the Bay area?
Manresa State Beach. CA
your videos would be better if you actually told people where you are fishing. you don't have to say exactly where, but like ya know what state, what county or at least what the beach name is.
@@ADesertVoice Thank you as I truly appreciate the feedback and will do.
Those sharks are lookin for some halibut 😂
some manibutt
No they're looking for Hal
I just finished fishing this beach and I saw 2 halibut get caught. They were both caught on a white fluke dropshot. I didn’t get any bites because I was not prepared to target halibut but it seems they are there. I will hopefully be out tomorrow with a dropshot trying to get a nice halibut. 👍🐟
Very nice catch! Fortunate!
Nice catch.
Nice!!! What Rod are you using??
Very nice striper! I have had bad luck with striper lately, but it is hopefully going to get better. 90% of the striper I have seen people catch over the past month have been on softshell sand crabs and I only use artificial lures.
Yeah I am seeing the same thing. Have you ever tried a 4 or 6 inch plastic worm? I am thinking about trying it for striper and perch.
@@JoeG480 I have never used a 6 inch plastic worm but I have been told it works. Someone on the beach a few months ago said they had used the 6 inch “gulp” sand worms and caught striper+perch on it. They said they rigged it with 2 hooks, one at either end of the worm. I will definitely give it a try when I run out of 2in paddle-tails. Tight lines 👍🐟
went out with 3 homies 3ft tide all nothin tried anchovies and shrimp
That’s a bummer. Fishing is like that sometimes
Love your channel❤😮
Why don’t you wade out further?
No need to wade out further unless I need to cast far.
Also the camera makes it look like I am further away from the water than reality
I use the gotem baits kraw. They love it. Super glue is your friend they will pull your bait off 😅
Looks like very low tide lately.
Where do you fish?
click bait five minuets in and still yacking. Seeya!
It’s called fishing. Sometimes your in the right spot or not
Thank u for this video.now I know that if there are surfers, the fish still bites. .Bc everywhere I go there are surfers
Hahaha, yes and Seals are okay too
You fish SoCal? Good helpful intermittent commentary. 10 foot rod?
Thank you ! It was a 9.5” rod
Never fished so cal as of yet
@@JoeG480 Santa Cruz and north?
@BobbyOfEarth Thank you for the insight, really appreciate it!
You prefer circle hooks? Any particular reason; ease of releasing fish? When moving around how much beach are you covering?
@ronmodafferi8202 I use circle hooks in general especially with sand crabs as it creates better presentation of bait and I believe they hook up better in general than traditional style hooks. If using artificial bait, I would not use circle hooks though
I target holes, and troughs and look for steep slopes in the beach where it gets deep and the water is darker. The amount of beach I cover depends on how quickly I find the school of perch. I keep moving frequently until I get consistent bites which can be immediate or sometimes as far as 1-2 miles.
@@JoeG480 Thanks. That's a fair amount of walking and time involved, But it works well for you,
How is parking in that general area ? Enjoy ur vids to bud good day to all
@ChallyMac10 Thank you for the kind words! Yes, there is parking nearby.
Love your videos, reminds me of my surf fishing days in the mid 1980's. Me and my buddy would fish along the coast from Half Moon Bay south to Santa Cruz and catching loads of Bard Perch. Moved inland to the Sacramento Area and now I live Central Florida for the past 20 years. I have a couple questions. What is the Rod you are using and what was the weight you were throwing in the video.
Curious also
Thank you for the kind words! I typically use a 9.5" Fenwick Rod and Shimano SW5000 Reel
@@JoeG480 like a Fenwick steelhead rod
@@Srussell516 Good call! I usually fish with “Elite” model which is often used for steelhead and many other species of fish.
Always nice when the fish pull your string... I'll point out that the schoolie Stripers are running bait along beaches from SF down to south of Santa Maria right now. While you'll occasionally catch one on a sand flea, guys are catching limits by swimming 110mm jerkbaits.. Calissa's, Lucky Craft, Battlestar, SP minnows etc... Even the larger Barred perch will aggressively attack them. Cheers
do you eat them?
No I don’t eat them, I just use for bait.
Fantastic!!! I’m coming back!!
I think we were tied as the biggest fish
Yeah it was really close!
Nice fish brotha!

Haha love the name. subbed
Where where where????????? Santa Cruz?
Yep, the stripers are running in socal right now.. Time to throw a 110mm Lucky Craft or Calissa...
Nice!
Hi just wanted to know if you are located in Nor Cal?
Is this Northern California?
Congrats! That's a nice striper 👏
Thank you!
Great catch Bro. That’s why I love the surf. You get good variety.
Thank you!
Wow! That is a very fine fish. What length rod do you use?
Thanks Ron, 9”6”
@@JoeG480 PB Beach north of SC?
Very nice! I tried to fish there yesterday morning for striper but all I caught was a few pounds of seaweed 😂. Had to go a few miles south to catch some perch instead.
I feel your pain with the seaweed!
😡 Do not eat Cal coast fish. DDT found in water
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! What rod/reel are those?
I use the Shimano Saragosa 5000 SW. I use a 9’ 6” Fenwick Elite rod
@@JoeG480 Thank you for the quick response!
Wow! You convinced me sand crabs are the top bait for surf perch. Makes sense; it's their favored food item. But at times and beaches, they can be tough to find. What length rod and hook size do you use?
Thanks Ron! I use a 9’ 6” rod with size 4 finesse circle hooks. To be fair, there are lots of good baits for perch, sand crabs are just my “go to.” I’ve done well with plastics and shrimp in the past as well. Sometimes sand crabs are hard to find, but with persistence they are typically catchable if you have the time and patience to find them.
@@JoeG480 Thanks for the reply!!
Thank you Gabe. It was Seacliff
Way up to north??
Awesome video bro what beach is this ?
🔥🔥🔥
I prefer hard shell crabs as soft shell catches more small perch.
The seaweed was making me loose my mind today 😂
Me too!
Fishing in Santa Cruz County

Thank you, really appreciate the feedback
Looks like a awesome day out there. Are you fishing the Oregon or Washington coast 🤔 just wondering. It rained a little down here in So. Cal. Love the videos keep them coming.
Thank you for the kind words. I haven’t fished too much in Washington or Oregon but I would love to try in the near future hopefully.
so when you look at the ocean conditions (for surf fishing perch or stripers) is it better when the WAVES are crashing at longer space of time? Or better when the waves are coming one after another one... e.g better 8seconds per wave or 16seconds per wave? ....
Hi Geppetto, to be honest I am not entirely sure if it makes much difference. In general I am looking for deep troughs right after the first breakers and in between the 2nd row of breakers. If I see dark or real calm water that means there is a hole I will typically fish. These conditions usually exist when there is a nice downward slope in the beach and the wind and seaweed are minimal. Also I prefer to fish when the tide is coming in but that’s just my preference and may vary depending who you ask.
@@JoeG480 im fairly new to surf fishing, i got my first perch and I thought maybe its a lucky hit...then I got two more then I started to think well i suppose if fishes are there I will eventually catch them....then went fishing few more times without catching anything... THEN I caught my first stripers 19in..incoming tide and waves spaced at 14seconds each...then few days NADA.. the I hit another striper bigger 20inchs... outgoing tide and waves spaced at 15seconds....all of this with carolina rig and the BERK SAND WORM. then went couple of times where the waves were at intervals of 6 seconds apart... NADA..... so in short thats why I was asking if waves intervals are important... going again tomorrow intervals at 9sec...we'll see. lol...thnanks
@@Geppetto-xj1td Thanks Geppetto, that is great that you caught those Striper and with a gulp worm. What size was the worm? I haven’t caught a striper in awhile. Nice catch!!
@@JoeG480 caught them with a 2in....I've seen people suggesting to buy a 6in worm, cut it in two to save money, I did just that BUT fish seem to be NOT interested in that....they SEEM to prefer the 2in...dunno if the scent is stronger on the 2in or what it is.... I also tried a JERKBAIT but if the conditions are just a bit windy, its useless caz you cant cast it to a decent distance, people also swear on BRAIDED LINES, im not sold on that either, seem to be tangling easier that the other types of lines.... again im new and dunno much about it, im still in the process to test whats better
Caught a 25in striper 2 days ago only 1/2 mile north of where you are in this video. Hope to see you hook up on one soon 👍🐟
Nice! What were you using for bait?
@@JoeG480 I was throwing a 1 1/2oz blue and silver Kastmaster. The perching was really slow which is why I thought there might be stripers chasing them off 🐟💨
Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏻
