1952 SBM Chevy PU door reconstruction & adjustment Ep 5
In this video I will complete my 1952 SBM Chevy door restoration project by reassembling all the major components of the door, installing the door on the truck and adjusting the door to the striker plate (which hadn't been moved from its original position). If you had removed the striker plate previously, you would adjust the door gaps without the striker plate installed and then install and adjust the striker plate to the door latch. At that point, it's just a matter of reinstalling the door panel, arm rest (if you have one), handles, and inside garnish molding.

Some of the new relays have an extra tooth on the shaft! I had that problem with a rebuild kit.
where do I ordert those rivets.
Hey Jerry my doors are missing the window guides how is the top held in ?
Do you have a link for the screws you used in the felt channel? Also the screws you used on the felt on the inner window trim you used in the other video? Thanks for your help
where can I by the tool for the r\ivets
Excellent!
Very helpful! Do you happen to know where I might be able to get the vent window handle posts at? Both my vent window handles were not attached and the post they attach to are gone.
i`m in the same predicament , did you ever find a post , or just the frame assembly?
@@centralscrutinizer76 I had to make one from scratch unfortunately.
How do you install new rivet for window roller at the bottom of door windows?
great video really helped alot the only ? I have my vent windows are all black what color black should they be gloss, semi gloss or what thanks for any help
What was that vise you used to pinch those rivets together?
Having hard time finding #4 x 3/8 self tapping screws that you used. Can you help.
How do you attach the felt window channel.
very helpfull.
way cool!
Thanks!
Jerry, thanks for the step by step installation procedures. It has kept me from pulling my hair out. I used felt channel from a local distributor but it is cloth backed and has been impossible to form in the corner. On the filling station site there looks to be a choice of two different felt channels. One is 8 ft and the other is 5ft I think. I didn't see a reference number for the felt channel in the video parts numbers.
Have a 1948 GMC truck .. passenger door wont open.. there is a door lock below the handle .. I do not have any keys .. but been trying to get that door open and not sure how the door mech works .. if the key door lock will allow the interior handle to unlock the door or not or if you have to open the key lock first before the door will open .. Kind of scratching my head on that one
Super video !! Merry Christmas !!
Thank you very much!
I know this is an old video, but if anybody finds a good solution to removing the bottom vent window post that is completely rusted shut.
If you are talking about the pivot post (with the nut, washers & spring) and not the post with the felt channel in it, I use a propane torch to heat up the nut. Then hit the rusted area with penetrating oil and work the nut back and forth with a socket. When it moves, you are usually home free. If you are talking about the bolt at the bottom of the vertical post down inside the door, I will use a small butane torch to heat up the nut, lock the post against the outside door skin with a Vise Grip pliers so it can't twist on you, hit the bolt with some penetrating oil and and work the bolt until you can get it to move.
I had to end up cutting a new access panel to apply heat and remove bolt. It was a major pain.
What are the big rivet pliers you used called ? I can't seem to find those exact ones
That is a Kent-Moore J39354 Rivet squeezer. I believe you can get this tool at your local Harley dealer but they are expensive- over $300 last I saw.
Wish you were here, I would turn my project over to you.
Thanks! That is a very nice complement!
Thank you so much for the video ! It isn't the easiest task but you helped me get through with no real problems ! I am working on my 1955 series 1 Chevy truck. Thanks again for the informative video !
You are welcome!
Thanks Jerry, your efforts gave me the knowledge and confidence to rebuild the vent windows on my 1982 Jeep Wagoneer!
Awesome, thanks!
Jerry, hay man sure glad your doing these. I do need some help please. I'm putting in the new vent window from a single glass. where do get the bracket for the post, or do I have to make one. thanks Kurt
If the bracket you are talking about is the one with the nut at the bottom of the post, probably easiest to make one. I can send you one if you still need it.
Brilliant video. This channel is a great resource when you're fixing things & got stumped. I actually had a bit of trouble finding oversize hinge pins & was about to make something. This is better. Jerry, if I was a sculpter I'd start on statue of you. Great work & you went to an awful lot of trouble of making it perfectly understandable & you left nothing behind. Hitting subscribe as a result of you making good sense, good information & explained perfectly. Ya Nailed it!!!
Thanks! Glad to be a help!
Just excellent!..just have to learn how to get the door off.
Thanks. I have a video on that also.
Thank you for sharing...
You're welcome!
Hi Jerry. I recently removed my vent window assembly on my 1952 Chevy Truck to rebuild and add new seals. The vent window T post was so rusted the nut stripped off along with stripping the threads on the post. The post is rusted bad. Im having a hard time finding a replacement vent window t post. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.
Hi Robert, I am currently reproducing these pivot posts for $25 each + shipping. I am making them with stainless steel so this won't be an issue in the future. I don't know of anyone else making these and after producing a few, I can see why. The rights and lefts are not interchangeable and the post is canted slightly forward and with a slight angle so when installed, it has a slight inward angle on each side. I am currently making jigs to make the job a bit easier to produce but for now I am doing them by hand. If you are interested in one or both sides, you can email me at drjsrestorx@comcast.net
I have one of the bottom bolts on the vent window run channel, that will not come out. Do you have any suggestions?
This can be tough and I have run into this before. The problem is that you can damage (twist) the vent post if you can't get the bolt loose. Spray some penetrating oil on the bolt area and let it sit for at least a couple hours or over night. Attach a Vice Grip to the bottom of the post around the clip area that the bolt goes through so that it doesn't twist as you are trying to loosen the bolt. Get the socket on to the bolt head and work it back and forth to see if it will move at all. Be patient! Once it moves, you are usually home free. In severe cases you can use a small torch to heat the area, but do this at your own risk. Remember, penetrating oil is flammable and will cause a fire inside your door, so it's best to use penetrating oil AFTER you are done using the flame. Alternately, you can try dabbing some white vinegar on the rusted bolt area and leave it over night to see if you can dissolve some of the rust before trying to loosen the bolt. If the bolt head breaks off, oh well... at least you can get the vent out of the door and you can deal with getting the rest out of the clip on your bench. The best way to view what you are doing inside the door is to put a flashlight inside the door and view through the weep holes at the bottom of the door (best done while the door is off the truck and on a table or saw horses. Hope this helps!
@@jerrykassis5181 , thanks Jerry. That worked. It’s out. I’ll be referring back to all your videos, as I put it back together. Oh, one other thing. There was an, accordion looking channel, where the run channel goes. Will I be reusing this?
Jerry, this entire door series is a tremendous help to me as I restore my 47 GMC. Thank you.
Thanks for the nice comments! This is precisely why I am doing these videos... I feel your pain and want to make your job a little easier!
May I have the part number for The Filling Station's Door Seal Rubber back felt
If you are talking about the felt run channels, the 5 ft is CV -69A and the 8 ft is CV-69
Can I put the springs in after the pin is in? My pins are frozen and I just want to add the springs but the springs aren’t reaching the hole
No, the springs are inserted just before you marry the hinge bar to the hinge frame, then the pin is inserted, like I show in my video.
I had the same problem with the hinge pin sliding out and making it impossible to get the bottom hinge out of the frame. Can't remember how I got it out, but it took an entire day. Basically I just used a lot of brute force and every tool I could get ahold of.
Sometimes this is the only way...and a Sawzall!
Not sure how you did this so easily and the window works effortlessly. I fought mine for 2 hours and the window is extremely hard to roll up, i cant get it to move more than 2 inches up. What do I need to do differently.
Not sure but it sounds like something is pinching the door window. If you can push the window up and down with the regulator disconnected, then I would suspect the window regulator. otherwise the channels are either pinching the glass or the distance between the vent post and the rear of the window channel could be too tight.
What a well made AWESOME Video !!!!!! Thank You for making it Jerry. I have a 1953 Chevrolet Panel Truck I just got in September of 2022. One of the many things that need restored is the vent windows. The price that I saw quoted below was $225. a pair plus parts and shipping back to me,is that still that price ? Also when you restore a pair for others do you sandblast and paint the frames with that black Commercial Performance Coating that you used in the Video ? I would like to have the green tinted vent window glass.
Hi Mark, Thanks for the nice comments! Sorry for the LATE reply! My labor price is now $285 per pair and yes, I do sandblast and paint with the PPG Commercial Coatings still. You can email me at drjsrestorx@comcast.net for more info.
Just did this yesterday. I used the same staple holes , drilled out to 5/64 and made new staples out of mechanics wire.
Good thinking! This will look exactly like stock but a lot of people won't want to go to this extent.
Thanks Jerry, while you are in rebuild mode on the vent windows, can you also show how to replace the spring in the door relay behind the handle shaft. I just bought a pair from the filling station
I didn't know that The Filling Station had the door relay spring available?
Nice job
Thanks!
Hi Jerry, thank you for the videos they are such a big help! I have a 52 gmc and this is my first restoration so these videos are a wealth of knowledge for me. I do have one question about the door alignment, my doors were removed by the painter but when he put them back on they stick out from the latch down. It’s lined up everywhere very nicely but they stick out pretty far. How can I get them back in? I appreciate any help you may be able to give. Thanks.
This is a common problem when new weatherstrip is installed and you may have to look into different weatherstrip options. You can call me at 541-405-8286 to discuss these options.

Had Jerry redo my vent windows a couple of years ago. Just now putting them into the truck. Excellent job and I highly recommend his work. Do yourself a favor and let him rebuild yours. You will only wonder why you tried it when you get into these windows. Take my advice.
Thanks!!!
Just watched this video while disassembling my vent windows. Everything exactly as described, hard brittle rubber and areas of rust. So helpful thank you. Now just have to put everything back together again… Thanks again for a great tutorial
Glad it helped!
excellent video, very help full with complete video
Glad it was helpful! Thanks!
Great info. However prior to 1950 the trucks didn’t not have the vent window and the forward glass window seal support looks like the rear channel but is welded at bottom to somewhat hat shaped support onto which the vertical channel is welded. Our 1948 glass window forward channel was busted and once stubby portion remained welded to the lower support. We got a replacement channel which comes with the lower support, however, that lower support can only be installed if you cut the doors inner panel. So we mfg a nut plate. Drilled the existing lower support and fastened the vertical support to lower existing support with ⅜” hex head screws. 😊
Ingenuity does the trick again! When I had to replace one of these brackets (for the same reason) I drilled out the spot welds where the bracket was attached and plug welded the new bracket in place. Worked great.
Great! This helped us with our 1948 Chevy pickup, short bed. Our hinges were extremely hard to remove the pins. Pins were frozen and the only way to remove them was drilling the core of the pins in steps. That said we had to cut the pins just between the support and the hinge arm, destroyed the washers that are welded between the arm and support that take up the gaps since the support inner spread is greater than the arm thickness (arm is about 1.5 inches, the support inner spread is about 2.3 inches.) Upon assembly I cut and shaped two .400” shims and installed one on either side of arm. The shims will be bolt hole aligned and sport welded to the support inner surface.
Nice work! If the gap isn't too wide, you can put the frame in a good vise and squeeze the sides of the frame to make the gap snug to the hinge bar. I often have to do this when I rebuild hinges and most used hinges have a gap between the frame shims and the hinge bar.
Thank you, I'm not sure I could have done it without you.
Glad I could help
How do you remove that outer window trim
Basically you have to remove the retaining screws and disconnect the two sides at the upper joint. Once you have them separated, you need to pinch the two sides inward. This will feel like you are going to crimp the lower corners, but if you are careful and only pinch the sides of the trim inward enough to release the lower part of the trim from the pinch-weld, you should be able to lift the trim out of the opening. There are two or three tabs at the bottom of this trim that you have to make sure are not keeping you from removing the trim. I plan on making a video in the future on this procedure, so watch for it.
@@jerrykassis5181 thanks I figured it out alrea
Jerry, I’ve been having a heck of a time with my windows. Question - I’m assuming the roller straddles the sheet metal on the c-channel as opposed to riding all the way in the channel, correct.
Correct Mark. The double-lipped roller straddles the C-channel. When you replace the original roller, which is basically a flat head stud with felt washers, this creates a very narrow area for the new double-lipped roller to pass through the "C"-channel, so you have to use a very flat headed screw, like one of those furniture screws with a phillips insert to bolt the channel in place so that the roller can bypass the heads for the screws without hitting the head of the bolt. Even then you may have to grind some off the head of the bolt in order to have clearance.
Great video, I sent my 1954 1300 series truck to a shop for a paint job.....Long story short, it came back worse than when it went in. Now I have to start from scratch and do the front fenders and hood all over again. Do you have a vid that shows how to start this up? I think i have to float the fenders and hood to get it inline.
No video yet on this procedure but I hope to do one in the future. There is a chapter in the 48-53 Chevrolet shop manual that addresses this procedure. It's in section 11-5 of the manual and will step you through this procedure. A word of advice... be patient and have some help when doing this. It can be very frustrating.
need a link for those no.4 self tappers
The #6 should work. The #4's are difficult to find. www.ebay.com/itm/6-Self-Drilling-Sheet-Metal-Screws-TEK-Tap-Pan-Head-Stainless-Steel-All-Sizes/263162027646?var=562159980733&hash=item3d45adde7e:m:mqdbAhukx7AlEY-3ktAcgIQ:sc:USPSFirstClass!97355!US!-1
