It is beautiful through there during the day, we have traveled that road many times on our yearly vacation to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area. Once you get over the mountain and start getting into the more flat road coming into Cherokee there is a walking path on the left that has a long wooden bridge going over the creek. You should stop there and walk out that path for a ways and see if you get anything. I wish I could remember the name, we always stop there and do a pic on the bridge. That path winds back for a ways into the forest. Can't say I seen anything but then I'm not very good at catching that kind of stuff David. Be safe driver! Edit-I looked on the map and I believe that trailhead is Kephart Prong Trail Trailhead. It goes many miles back into the forest away from all the traffic on Newfoundland Gap Rd. If you have the stamina to hike 5+ miles give it a try the next time you go through there. No telling what you might find/see. 😊

Hey David, when it warms up some out there look around for a honey suckle patch. If there is one keep an eye on it and see if it gets broken down when it starts blooming. Some of them like taking those blooms and rubbing them on their bodies. You might find a bunch of picked blooms crushed up in a pile on the ground.
