    Any advantage to using a gravity feed gun with pps vs the bottom feed?

    • @JakeLesada
      @JakeLesada Před 12 dny

      With turbine spraying, the cup is pressurized from the side air tube going into the cup. Once the cup is pressured, the air forces the fluid out similar to how gravity would flow the fluid out of the tip. The advantage to gravity feed would be the natural familiarity of spraying if someone is crossing over from compressor style paint spraying to turbine paint spraying. I have an older video on this channel that shows the difference, " compressor vs. turbine spraying".

    I just realized the Avanti spray gun doesn’t have a fan width adjustment and that sucks! I’d like to be able to dial the pattern down to about 4-6 inches to paint some interior trim and it’s impossible. The turbine is good but that’s some b…..it. The fan on it is huge and that’s great if you want to paint walls🫤

    Great video on this machine👍🏻 I guess HF has discontinued these, I kept looking at them and went to finally take the plunge a couple weeks ago and they were sold out including the display models all across the state I live in except for one I managed to find in a store about an hour from me that was a display model, got it for $200 which I think is a steal! It didn’t have the hoses or any of the spare stuff but the two tips, gun, turbine (of course) were there and like brand new so I grabbed it. I’m waiting on everything I need to show up so I can get going with it including some pps 2.0 liners ( which are ridiculously expensive as all 3m stuff is and has been forever ) I like your flexzilla hose idea and almost did it but found a Fuji super duty 30ft hose with built in 3ft heat sink for $65 and went with that. It’s Fuji’s heaviest duty and most expensive hose and normally sells for $110😅, if not for the huge discount I definitely would have went with the flexzilla, I have their air hose and love it. I’ve read numerous complaints on the HF hose it comes with so I’m glad I didn’t have to pay full price and then replace it lol. I’ve never used a turbine sprayer before but I’ve always been curious, I was an auto body painter for 27 years and have a pile of Sata guns, A couple Tekna/Devilbiss, etc., only one had a tip set big enough to spray the paint I’m using which is Sherwin Williams Emerald water based alkyd urethane and it worked, the stuff I’ve painted came out really nice but running 135ft of air hose from my garage and through the windows of my house is a pain lol, and being a conversion gun with no pressurization makes this stuff really tricky to shoot, plus there’s the pretty abundant amount of overspray to deal with also. I have a whole bunch of new trim/doors/ jambs to paint in my house and am hoping this does it easier and with less overspray, I’m excited to mess with it. I was going to use an airless sprayer but……. Meh Keep on keepin on 🙌🏻

    • @JakeLesada
      @JakeLesada Před 24 dny

      Once you get used to how turbine spraying works, you'll really start having fun. The Avanti 5 stage has good power and the psi range will be around 9.5psi static pressure and when the air bleed occurs it's more like 8.4-5psi. Their turbine spray gun uses about 3 psi on trigger pull, and the back adjustment for the fan width will reduce the size of the fan but at the cost of reducing atomizing air pressure. So be conscious of that air to atomization relationship because you'll notice more orange peel if you reduce the fan width too much. As a comparison, the spray gun tips for turbine spraying auto clear favor 1.0mm and with the Avanti 5 stage, the 1.3mm is no problem - but you have to move fast enough because it will hose it on like you're using 1.5mm compressor gun and you might get runs. Make sure you get full saturation with the lay down too, otherwise the spray will look used car lot dry. On my other channel " Turbine Sprayer" I go into more details on specific topics, check it out when you have time. I also like to cycle my machines to off whenever possible - when I"m not spraying in between flash off times - doing so will reduce any heat building up and it will be quieter in the room. If spraying in hotter days, it's a good idea to place a fan to help cool the machine if it gets too warm. Also, if you're spraying outside work, the sun will warm the hose and machine fast so be conscious of that too, and look for shade if possible. Don't use too long of a hose because you'll get pressure drop at the air cap and paint atomization will suffer. I've maxed to 35ft and eventually shortened my hose to 30ft and 15ft for my needs. You're lucky to have found a machine, in my area they are sold out within over a 100 mile radius and only display models with missing pieces - but at bargain prices a great deal.

    Hey Jake! I commented on one of your other videos some time ago, mentioning that I was going to build my own Turbine Sprayer. Well I was at the ole' Harbor Freight today and they had an open box avanti, just missing the hoses and tip wrench, for $245! So, it came home with me. Works great! I have some questions with it. I watched your video on dialing in the gun, so I have a good starting point. Do you monitor or regulate the PSI on the Avanti gun at all via a gauge? Wondering if you have preferred PSIs for spraying primer vs base vs clear. Goal is to reduce waste as much as possible! I will be getting the Apollo guns you recommended eventually. I've never sprayed with a gun before, let alone with a Turbine, so I want to learn on the Avanti equipment first! I did horse around with it with what little bit of automotive paint I did have laying around (test samples of the colors I picked for my C600 Cabover) and I'm blown away by the lack of overspray. I held my test panel still with my bare hands and didn't get a single drop of paint on me!

    • @JakeLesada
      @JakeLesada Před 26 dny

      That's a great deal at HB. When I'm spraying I don't regulate air pressure at the machine - but at the Avanti spray gun fan control dial at the back of the spray gun. I call the dial an air choker and adjusting it will reduce the working air flow pressure (psi). The adjustment is designed to reduce the spray fan width, but sometimes it can reduce the needed air pressure to atomize certain paint materials like thicker primer. And the result will be more texture. Also check out my other channel "Turbine Sprayer" I go into more depth on spraying topics and spraying sessions. The Avanti gun will consume about 3psi when trigger is pulled and the flow pressure will drop, but it works because the machine pressure is a 5 stage. Check out the spraying with water video topic ep2 on other channel.

    How does that hose handle the heat for longer run times?

    • @JakeLesada
      @JakeLesada Před 29 dny

      My hose handles it fine. According to Flexzilla tech, it's the same composition as the 3/8" air hose we use in the body shop. But, they don't have testing data for how I"m using it as an air hose - they only have date for water use. But, the air hose we have in the spray booth goes through 140F-160F bake cycles. I get heat temp readings of around 10 degrees above ambient room temp with the turbine machines I'm using. When it's around 100F in the booth the machine is around 115F -118F.

    Can you show how to properly tighten? Mine wasn’t cutting last night so I’ll check the chain. I have the oil less 6” mini ryobi chainsaw

    • @JakeLesada
      @JakeLesada Před měsícem

      If the chain is installed backwards it will not cut correctly. Check chain direction first, arrow should point to front of bar. I don't know which model you have, but I looked at Ryobi's 6" oil less saw and noticed there is a (+ and - ) icon on the tool. Check with your operators manual and read the procedure to adjust chain tension. The tension should be not too tight, use gloves to protect your hands from the sharp chain, and pull on the chain with thumb and middle finger to give it a slight pull - it should have a enough tension to snap back slightly to the bar. Rotate the chain and make sure it can rotate freely without any binding. Not to loose and not too tight is best for chain rotation. As you get used to adjusting the chain, you'll find a best tension tightness for it. Hope this helps.

    Would a 2 stage fuji unit potentially get a similar finish.

    • @JakeLesada
      @JakeLesada Před měsícem

      For the finish to be similar, the paint viscosity must be thin enough to flow with a 2 stage. If the machine doesn't have enough air cfm (cubic feet per minute) or psi of at least 5psi -6psi - the finish will possibly have more orange peel texture. However if the paint is thinned and can easily be sprayed with the 2 stage, the finish will be similar. Do a water test spray out and see if the 2 stage machine can spray water to a full gloss.

    • @JakeLesada
      @JakeLesada Před měsícem

      I got some really cheap 4 for $20 used modules from a Prius used car dealer. The modules had low voltage SOC (state of charge) but, they were close to my pack individual module voltages. I installed only one module that had the best or least voltage drop in a 24hr period. The car was back on the road. It was great for several months until we used aftermarket seat warmers from Amazon and then the pack red triangle reappeared. I scanned the car to see which module was bad and it was the one I had replaced from the Prius used car dealer. So, I redid the pack again by replacing only that bad module, and since I still had 3 leftover from the "4 for $20" group, I used one of those to get the car back on the road. As long as the replacement modules are good, you should be fine. The ones I got used and installed probably were just "ok" and not good.

    What number 2.0 adapter is that? I just made a u tube conversion to make it a gravity feed, but i guess i could also go with to he bottom feed h/o, i have my conversion setup with the 1.0 spectrum system, but it has a hole that i have to seal and put the nipple from the cup in to make it work, but i will probably just buy the legit 2.0 3M setup! I also bought the Niagara 100ft 3/4 contractor hose, and to be honest it looks better to me than the flexzilla i seen at Walmart for double the price, it is light and really flexible just like the flexzilla, but we will see how good it works eventually! It will be awhile before i paint my truck, i have the money saved to buy all my paint and primer s i just need to get some color matched and figure out what sealer/ epoxy i want to go with, it's a older truck so i want it to last forever!

      In this video I'm using the 3M adapter S18, it's the longer adapter. designed for the bottom feed. But now, I use the shorter S34 adapter originally designed for the top feed spray guns. It works and is shorter and lighter than the S18. The "S" designates it as the 2.0 version and the #18 or#34 adapter designates it as the 1.0 version. Just remember the shorter the air hose the stronger the air cap pressure at the spray gun. I cut my hose down now to a 30ft and 15ft length. @@JakeLesada yeah I read up and seen the s#'s are 2.0, I just wasn't sure what number. And I'm definitely cutting the 100ft down to a more practical length. I will be painting a vehicle in a booth so I will have a long hose for that and a short hose for smaller projects. I wonder if the spectrum liners work in the 3M setup? Didn't spectrum just copy them? The liners are cheap at HF but a sandwich bag is a great idea, especially if painting something besides automotive! Thanx for the reply, I'm sure il be back with plenty of questions as I get this rig up and running! Your the best brother!

      I think the Spectrum liners are meant for the 1.0 version PPS. Compare the top center opening of the liner lid. The 1.0 is small in diameter, and the 2.0 is a larger opening. Also, the hose I'm using is a 5/8" diameter.

    Jake, just ran across your channel. Thanks for the great info. When you cut the hose, what fittings did you use and how did you attach them to the hose?

    • @JakeLesada
      @JakeLesada Před měsícem

      I used my old barbed fittings from my Apollo hose. And then, I reattached with the Otekiker clamps I removed from the Apollo hose and rewrapped them with black electrical tape for esthetics. You can use a regular small hose clamp to connect the hose to the fitting, but it is not as factory oem looking. Also, Flexzilla has a hose custom cut fitting on their website that looks like it could work too. I talked to the tech rep Tyler today, and he described them to me and I think they should work great. They are made of aluminum similar to the Apollo fittings. The couplers I used are the Apollo couplers, they work great and are made of aluminum. I'm still working on getting some links up, but you can source the Flexzilla couplers at Ace hardware. I got some on order from Amazon and will get those links up if they work, and after I experiment with the fittings. I just recut my hose to 30ft and reused my clamps, I'll post that video in a couple days.

    Dang Kuya. Props to you. Ang galing. Question for you. Finally got my paint Bc/Cc. Base is 2:1 which = 1.5 gal. of sprayable. Will this be enough for engine bay, jambs incl hood/ trunk and rest of exterior. Its a 2000 Civic coupe. Color change to Obsidian Blue metallic(Very Dark) Using a black epoxy sealer as undercoat. From my understanding from you and other turbine users this system uses less paint. Salamat again.

    • @JakeLesada
      @JakeLesada Před měsícem

      Walang anoman! Yes, that should be plenty. Depending on the equipment you use, if you can spray base coat at 5.5psi you'll save paint from excess overspray. The clear coat, depending on brand and mix ratio, can be sprayed from 6psi to 7psi. Higher psi like 8psi or 9psi will use more paint, but you'll have to move faster so you don't get runs or sags. The base coats like a 0.8mm needle and tip - for most brands. You can go larger to 1.0mm but be careful not to over wet the base coat using a larger needle and tip. I used 1.3mm and it does increase the spraying speed, but it will build fast so you gotta move fast. Most clear coat brands can be sprayed at 1.0mm as the "go to size". If you use a smaller 0.8mm thinking you'll reduce your orange peel texture, you will reduce the peel a bit - but the paint will also be thinner. And, if you're using a high solids clear thru a small 0.8mm needle and tip, there will be more overspray because the clear is being choked thru a small tip. 1.0mm is best all around size. 1.3mm goes heavy with clear coat and waste the paint sometimes. Also try to get at least a 4 stage unit if you can, 5 stage is best standard all around, and the newer 6 stage is higher psi and more power. Automotive clear coats are in the 37% -42%-51% solids content and 4 stage and 5 stage can handle them easily. Practice with spraying water at first to get the water to gloss. Siempre

    Alright guys i just bought a 3 stage for 160 dollars brand new from HF and it was the display, i have no cord and i want a reasonable all around gun to spray primer to clear on automotive, i seen you got the flex Zilla, what fittings should i buy to set a hose like you got up? Will the 3 stage atomize close to this? Your 5 stage seems to be rocking! BTW i do plan on sanding between coats to get a better overall finish, i just need dependable and consistent i can sand out alot of imperfections! Thanx jake, your the Avanti man!😂

    • @JakeLesada
      @JakeLesada Před měsícem

      The fittings I'm using are the Apollo couplers and hose barbed end fittings. The links to the Flexzilla hose are in my Flexzilla hose video. Try and use the shortest hose because you have a 3 stage and you'll have more pressure at the air cap with a shorter hose. A good length for a short hose is 20ft - 15ft. And for a long hose, mine was at 33ft 4inches, but I just cut it to 30ft. I use the Avanti turbine replacement gun and my older and new Apollo spray gun. The prices are on low and high end but the performance of either I can spray anything. Sanding between coats is normal if you want an absolute flat panel for show car. I always like to get the panel straight in metal, do the filler and glaze, and level out my coats to flat. I don't really like to use the high build primers to much but prefer the easy flowing 2k primers and block it with guide coat. The high build stuff always ends up on the floor anyway.

    Hi Jake, love all your turbine content. When it comes to fluid/air adjustment, how do you decide whether to increased fan/air or decrease fluid in order to get the correct ratio in your spray out? For example if the initial gun setting has dry spray on the wall spray out, do you decrease air or increase fluid? On the other end, if the spray out causes the pattern to run, do you increase air or decrease fluid? And how am i able to tell the difference between glossy and over wet? Thanks again

    • @JakeLesada
      @JakeLesada Před 2 měsíci

      I'll try to explain. First, understand that you are the #1 variable in the spraying. Your spraying distance with the spray gun should be about 6"-7" inches from the panel - could be a little bit closer but don't go too far away. Second, the air pressure will also be set at the machine to whatever the machine has available or to whatever setting you are able to set it at. The mixture is going to be based on keeping the #1 variable constant and the air pressure constant. The fan adjustment is needed if you want the edges of the spray pattern to be less straggly bits of atomization, then you tighten the fan a little. Now for the mixture, it will depend on the size of the tip you choose and the air cap. The tip is more important to pick correctly. The thick paint needs a bigger tip (1.0mm -1.3mm/1.5mm), the thin paint - like base coat needs a smaller tip (0.8mm), and the clear coat likes medium size tip (1.0mm). If the spray gun setting has dry spray on wall test, then you have too little of mixture for the amount of air - so increase the fluid mixture. Or, you could be moving to fast - slow down a bit. If the spray out causes the paint to run then you keep air constant and decrease fluid mixture. Or, you could be moving too slow - pick up the pace a bit. You will be able to see the correct glossy when light easily shines off the spray test, and it is not over wet - if it doesn't run after you walk away and come back to look at it. Hope this helps.

    The longer bar saws have more durable motors and thicker bars that resist twisting in the wood better, and also some nicer features like more torque, higher chain speed, metal bucking spikes, etc. so they definitely have their place, but you're right - you can get a lot done when needed with the smaller ones. Careful not to run too hard though...I burned out the motor in my 18 inch twice due to cutting continuously for hours. I just got the new 20" model which should tolerate my abuse better.
