    One book that doesn’t necessarily have the drop 2 joe pass style voicings. Specifically I have noticed Joe loves his major 6th drop 2 voicing. But one book for solo guitar arrangement and really understanding it. I highly recommend Howard Morgan chord melody and beyond book. That alone will make you unlock the next step to seeing what these guys mainly do and simplifying the mystery.

    This is a fantastic video! You're helping a lot of people. One thing, though. The book breaks things into 6 chord types, but Joe only thinks in 3 types. Major, Minor, and Dominant. All chords relate back to those three types. This is stated in other of his books. He also told me exactly this, when I was 19 years old and went to see him play solo at the Iron Horse Cafe. He spent his whole break and some time after the show talking to me and 2 friends. We had gotten there 3 hours before doors opened and sat 6 ft away, eyes glued. He was such a great, kind, generous and funny dude. Anyways, other than that, this is a fantastic video. And I hate to be that dude, but I think it's important to really reduce things to simplest possible forms/terms.

    • @GeorgeHessMusic
      @GeorgeHessMusic Před 17 dny

      Thanks for the insights. I never met Joe, so I'm just going by what is in his books. I have Guitar Styles where he talks about those three types in the substitution section, but he also lists six chords types in other sections. But not the exactly same ones as in the chord book. In one of Joe's videos, where he says he doesn't think of arpeggios and then proceeds to demonstrate a lick using arpeggios. I think all of this is helpful in understanding how he thought. Thanks again.

    Hi. Great lesson. At 4:38 regarding functional subs, did you also mean those in the parallel minor? Meaning C minor, Eb Maj, Ab Maj can be treated as Tonic? D min 7 b5, F min are sub dom? G7 and B7 are dominants? All these can be subbed for same functional chords in C maj.

    • @GeorgeHessMusic
      @GeorgeHessMusic Před 18 dny

      No, it's the chords within each group. The tonic group includes Ima7,I6, iii-7 and vi-7. You can generally change one of these chords to another, keeping root movement and melody in mind. The subdominant minor group includes iv-7, iv-6, ii-7b5, bVII7, bVImaj7 and bIImaj7. Again, root movement and melody are a consideration. One common substitution in this group is to replace the iv-6 with a bVII7

    I thought that I was pretty decent blues/rock guitarist. My first attempts at playing jazz guitar were disastrous to say the least. I wasn’t “hearing” the changes, and as I gradually got better at negotiating jazz harmonies and feeling like I was making progress, I realized that I wasn’t even all that good of a blues/rock guitarist because I wasn’t really “hearing” that music either. I had just gotten luckier with blues and rock because there were fewer chances of playing wrong notes over minor pentatonic based three chord rock tunes than over a typical jazz standard. Once I figured out how to play jazz, my entire approach to playing rock and blues changed and I became a much better player all the way around.

It was really easy to be cocky and wank around utilizing the minor pentatonic box over simple I-IV-V7 changes back in the 70’s. I vividly recall working in a record store (remember those?) in 1976 and putting on a promotional copy of the Crusaders album Those Southern Knights, and hearing the heretofore unknown (at least to me) Larry Carlton wend his through the harmonic minefield on the first cut “Spiral”. I realized right then and there, that I was just a piker.

      Something else that I realized much later in life that I wish I had realized earlier, is that there is nothing mysterious about the recorded product of someone’s improvisation, (although I initially found some of Scofield’s ideas to be daunting) it’s about the process. Transcribing someone else’s solos might help in putting the language under one’s fingers and into one’s ears, but the bottom line is, that particular solo that you transcribed worked at that particular moment, with what that particular rhythm section was doing. As you have said, it’s all about listening. What will any one of us choose to do at any particular moment, with just 12 notes, in whatever configuration we happen to find ourselves in. That’s the where the rubber meets the road.

    Great stuff! I have never seen bebop scales (dim 6th) used on those particular chord degrees (not on their root note chord). C major bebop over E7...G Dominant bebop over D7 etc...would LOVE to know how you came up with this. Thanks again!

      TBH, I'm not a student of Barry Harris, though I am familiar with some of his principles. It was something of a coincidence that my method, which I've started calling the 1+1 method, one scale plus one note, creates 8 note bebop scales, so I guess it makes sense that one might be the same.
