Unearthing People of Colour In Sheffield's History With "Dig Where You Stand"
Dig Where you Stand is an archival justice project that uses the arts to tell untold stories about the people of colour who have lived, worked and set down roots in South Yorkshire over hundreds of years.
They have been doing this by exploring archival records, and using creative practices to reimagine the lives contained within them and sharing their stories within public exhibitions.
In May 2023, Dig Where You Stand announced that they were commissioning emerging / mid-career artists to expand this work. They invited 14 artists to dig into the Sheffield archives with the view to having a public exhibition in July 2024.
They sought regional stories about working class people of colour from before 1945. This project will come alive between 20th July and 18th August with exhibitions of new work across five venues in Sheffield City Centre.
We visited the archives to get more about this exceptional project which has uncovered black presence in our region going back as far as 1725.
With support from our colleagues at Roots Mbili Theatre, we spoke to Desiree Reynolds, the Director of Dig Where You Stand, Najma Heybe and Rosa Cisneros who are artists that participated int the project. Archivists Cheryl Bailey and Tim Knebel from Sheffield Archives also joined us for detailed insights into this collaboration.

CONGRATULATIONS GAÏNDÉ!
I guess white residents were all fine and dandy.
amazing interview and great leader elias, some are called up to help the country through politics which is an open area for everywhere to observe but others can indeed make a difference through other means and ways but politics
There's no need to call upon anybody. There is no climate emergency. The Earth was warmer in the recent and distant past. It also warmed faster in the past.
James Wilson what a Wanker............. My wife is from Pakistan it cost me up to £10,000 for her visas and indefinite leave to remain and rightly so. She is a Doctor and still we went through the legal process to make sure the UK Government were satisfied she was no threat and of use to the UK Citizens. This is the only route to go down! Anyone else are criminals and can go and be safe in Rwanda! The Government needs to investigate these anti UK Citizen organizations (and Charities that are clearly politically motivated) and close them down! This is the will of the majority of UK Citizens in this Country!

Somaliland is a not a country but rather a region of Somalia 🇸🇴. We should not divide Somalia by ignorant clan politicians internally who work with western colonizers externally. If you can’t see a United Somalia than don’t expect to see a United Africa.
Somaliland is a country hater
There has not been 1 apology from somalia for its transgression against the isaaqs
@@Your__mama You do realize Siad Barre also persecuted other people in Puntland as well as those in the south before he was overthrown. Do you see all of them seeking apology from an extinct regime? My mother side of the family is from Somaliland and we pump heads on this very topic. Even they know deep down inside that the West is trying to put their military base in exchange for fake “recognition” when in reality it will be a takeover with puppet leaders installed. Don’t cry when the inevitable happens and you let shaytan inside your house.
@@thinkbeforeyoutype7106 the most deaths in the South against siad barre was 2k and that was the majerteen but for the isaaqs it was 200k and everytime people mention the complete massacre of the North you koonfor say but it happened to us the most deaths in koonfor was MJ who lost 2k to siad barre until somalia apologises for its transgression publicly and the murder Morgan living comfortably in Mogadishu is sentenced and all the war criminal in Mogadishu is trialed there will never be I promise
@@Your__mama I’m from Puntland and MJ myself but I never downplay anything that happen to my other side of the family. What I am telling you, is that when you start seeing Western powers circling around you pretending to be your friend by “recognizing” you in exchange for military bases they already preplanned to overthrow any leader on you have. They will install puppet ones and what comes out of it will make you wish for the unthinkable.
Thanks for creating an awareness platform. I am from Somaliland origin and a US citizen. Living abroad 30 years and looking back, my biggest wish is African countries to just get along, both internally and with each other. We need to develop our way of indigenous systems to resolve crisis and make peace.
I agree but if you can’t or won’t unite with your fellow Somalia 🇸🇴 than what makes you think you’ll unite with Africa? My mother is from Somaliland region but never once she told me to accept the western division of Somalia and amongst Somalis.
@@thinkbeforeyoutype7106 your people almost wiped out my qabil let's not play innocent
