BEEKEEPING: When TOO MUCH Honey Becomes Dangerous
The effects of a honey bound hive can be serious if the queen runs out of space to lay. Keeping at least 6 frames with space to lay in the middle of the brood nest area is critical during the summer months. If you over feed or under super, the bees can fill the brood area with excess food. Blake walks us through how to identify and fix this issue!

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! Introducing The Bee Warranty!!
Thanks for the info Blake. I was having a terrible honey season because of the almost constant rain in April and May. In the first week of July I was resigned to getting half of what i got last year. Well, i just pulled honey and apparantly they found something in July! I was expecting 10 supers and got 26! Have you heard others reporting late flows this year? I am near Corsicana.
Do you ever have issues with hives getting too hot if they're in full sun?
Great video. Thank you.
Why not run the filled brood frames through the extractor rather than letting it get robbed out assuming theres no brood?
That would work too! The downside is honey extracted from the brood next often has syrup in it, or has been treated with a mite treatment, so it's often not fit for human consumption. Then, it's hard to feed liquid honey to bees. It's easier for them to eat it right out of the comb.
will the brood that's in with the honey die when you leave the frames in the shade two days?
Yes, it unfortunately will. I'd recommend taking frames that are 100% honey for the bees to rob out, and leave any frames with brood in the hive.
When you take out the honey frames to be robbed, do you need to uncap?
The bees will uncap them.
Well done! As an up and coming beekeeper in Burnett County Texas, there is host of good information.
Great information thanks
I've seen this tested and its not accurate, it will show if you have mites but its not accurate. In one video a guy used this and he found 3 mites and then he washed the same bees in alcohol to see if the alcohol would show more mites and he found twice as many mites in the alcohol wash so this CO2 testing is not accurate.
Your videos are outstanding. I once had 120 beehives and mostly sold honey and queens. I really enjoy how you explain things. I have SUBSCRIBED! Thank you - much appreciated…
Wow, thank you!
If you are in an area where there is Small Hive Beetle, I highly suggest you only giving enough pollen patty or sugar brick that they can consume in under a week to prevent making a small hive beetle breeding ground. You can also break it into smaller chunks as you did at the end to give the bees more surface area and ability to defend against small hive beetle.
If the queen is caged for that long bees will start queen cells. Might be a good idea to check for qcs before releasing the queen.
Thankfully, since she is caged still inside the hive, her pheromones will suppress the worker bees from raising new queen cells.
In our apiary we had the same expirience as Dalebees explain. And we are profesional bekeepers 95 years already. Sorry teoreticly excelent, , but this methode is not usefull at all.
What is she going to eat while laying that drone comb?
The worker bees will feed her normally. They can access the drone comb through the queen isolation cage. The isolation cage is made from queen excluders- so she cannot leave, but worker bees can enter/exit the cage just fine.
What and how queen eats, drinks and excretes?
The bees take care of her when she's in the cage- there are holes in queen cages for them to reach through and still care for her.
In that cage for 14 days? With no nurse bees or food?
The bees take care of her when she's in the cage- there are holes in queen cages for them to reach through and still care for her.
The entire cage is a queen excluder
What is the right time to do this?
Most do it after they harvest honey in July/August, but it can be done anytime in the spring/summer.
I would think preparing for a spring split after harvest is the better way to go. Remove excluder, add a deep and let the bees do their thing then split it next spring.
Can anyone explain why the mites fall off the bees with this technique?
Thanks for doing the videos, they are very helpful and enjoyable!
As every month I enjoyed the video a lot, VERY informative. Thanks!
This was good thanks you
I am trying oav in 1 apiary I am treating every 3-4 days for 8-9 treatment just to see if it works, it will be really cheap if it does but i tell you it is a lot of time, I am doing it on Wednesday and sat every week. Going to do a mite check maybe a week later just to see if it worked. the rest i am using apigaurd this year 25 gr 3 treatments. first time for eithere of these ways so I will see what I like the best.
Blake does compleat keep the syrup from going bad.
Thx for the advice
David how can I get one of your candy boards for a long lanstrought hive? Need to get ready for winter. I know you said you have to make adjustments to make it work for the long hives. Hoping to hear from you soon. You're a great bee keeper and I've learned a lot from you, thanks
An ounce is 2 tablespoons full. My wife checked online for me.
I want to do single deep management. I am planning already for my winter/ spring set up for next spring. I like to re-queen to keep a fresh queen yearly. When would I plan on grafting (from my own bees) and replace my queen and still not allow my queen to go backwards in my honey production? Would I do this before the flow (when drones are flying) or after the flow has started or when the flow is over. My flow is generally over July 4th.
The biggest problem is you don't see it coming. Fine one day three days later slimmed, on a strong hive. It will ruin your day.
Awesome! How do your hive boxes survive being on the ground? Curiously watching from Arkansas but living in Tokyo Oh-may )Ome) Japan.
TBS: Please pass this along to your video editor: Balance the audio levels!! That intro jingle is so f-ing loud compared to Blake's speech. Every video editor out there shows you the levels and waveform of the audio tracks. It should be quite visible on the difference. Just reduce the jingle by 50% from now on, and you should be good.
Thank you!! This is a super helpful comment- our video editor isn't a video editor, thus the audio problem.:) We'll figure out how to fix it!
Blake, are you certain it is Certan? Haha Great info.
Thanks that's interesting 👍 hopefully it's available in NZ 😂
Over 2 million colonies are started each year, but sadly, less than half survive the following year. Is this a better news story title?😮
What do you do now with this hive? How do you kill the SHB larve and such?
What strain of bees are they
What honey flow? Nothing much here in SE Dallas County. 😒
It's been a rough year in North Texas!:(
It's the wrong thing to do to bees.
Why?
@@msb11286 varroa is a symptom, of poor or damaging husbandry. These ineffective gimmicks cause even more harm to bees and are not the magic solution to bad beekeeping.
Given that the upper brood chamber didn't have a honey band how do you keep the queen from moving up to the honey super? I didn't see an excluder.
Sometimes she does, sometimes she doesn't. We use excluders if there is a strong honey flow and a strong hive. Otherwise we don't. If she does lay in the super we would just consolidate all the brood from all the hives into one super and put it onto a week hive that needs a boost in strenght.
Ha Blake do u ever under supper thanks. and what if u have foundation only.
Hi! If we have foundation, yes, we do bottom super. If we have comb, we just top super.
Thank you. Very helpful
GREAT 👍 TIPS
Lol smart man with the last statement 😂
Ha Chari this was good really enjoyed it. I look at 4 weather sources. We are in a dearth now, have pulled the honey and extracted it I got about 360/30 gal. ^ 5 gal buckets. anyway this was great. I get 15 for a pint I might have to go up next year the sugar is 20.00 a bag it was 8.88. it is real bad now.. have a great week. I have all my hives straped all the time I live in virginia and very close to water and we flood bad here it gets deep the tide just destroyed this city with our last harricane. it was bad. we flood bad with a northeastern just the wind the water get up to my knees.
Thanks for sharing! That's a great harvest! Sorry the dearth is bad- it's getting bad in our area too! Hang in there! Dearth and floods...never ends does it!?
Awesome sauce 🙌 thank you very much Chari for all the wonderful interviews/podcasts you do! I’m a “young” new 2024 beekeeper, got my bees from the Dayton TX location. I did 4/5 months of personal research no formal training and your CZcams channel has helped me so much I can’t thank y’all enough 🙏 looking forward to the years ahead and hopefully meeting you and the TBS team in person 🥳
Thank you! We can't wait to meet you!!

I’m from Canada I watch alote of your stuff your a good guy for taking time out of your life to talk about bees
THANK YOU!!
My concern about increase of losses is the increase of inferior queens produced in emergencie cells by bees and man using the worker egg, that queen needs to bee replaced every year! A queen lays a superior egg in a swarm cell that is larger than the worker egg making a superior queen to take her place and can live for years!
Interesting points- we'd love to see some studies done on this!
Hopefully, this is just the product I've been looking for!
Great vid, I've been running into both of these problems and have been looking for solutions.
My last Winters loss was around 60%, it's great that new beekeepers are joining but the numbers sound off. We always have the influx of new keepers every year but how many stick with it past their 1st Winter let alone 2nd or 3rd after they discover how difficult beekeeping can be. Spread the Truth! 👍Blessed Days...
