I can totally relate. My dad is Afro-Panamanian and my mom is African American. As someone who speaks English and Spanish, I would get shocked looks from Black and Latino folks because of being able to speak Spanish with ease and without shame. It is so nice to see another Panamanian and represent the culture. Continuar representando la cultura y joder a los que odian.

I'm Black. A few years ago a woman called me a name when speaking to her friend because I was walking slowly in front of her. You should have seen the shock on her face when I swiftly turned around to confront her. She then changed the tone of her voice and offered me support in English.

It happens to me as well. I thought it was because I’m a Gringo to them. A white guy. Perhaps it is not so much about color of skin, but nationalism. Nevertheless, it is a form of prejudice.

The Doo rag makes you look like a stereotypical African American, which is actually the surprise when you speak Spanish...Hispanic people are not shocked when they see Black people speaking Spanish, because there are many Black people living in Latin America..

I studied Spanish through grade school and college. Some people assume I speak Spanish and we just flow in conversation. Others sometimes assume I can’t hear them and say things they wouldn’t say in English. 😂

I can’t tell if it’s a rude thing or not, my girlfriend who is I would say technically a native Spanish speaker for 24 years. She started learning English in elementary school and was in English second language, so she constantly mixes talking in Spanish, and responding in English and visa versa, especially with her friends and siblings. Even her parents who don’t have great English she will still say some words to them in English and switch back to Spanish, but if it’s clear someone doesn’t know English she will only speak in Spanish.

It’s not just Mexicans who do that. I find it more often with Puerto Ricans. It comes across as a way to say you can’t be part of this click.

This definitely happens with Mexicans from what I’ve seen. For a multitude of reasons… I think many of them are oblivious to the fact that there are black people that speak Spanish as their native tongue, also the racial hierarchy in Mexico. The “white” Mexicans are at the top, then the Mestizos, at the bottom, virtually nonexistent in the demographic data are the Afro-Mexicans. They assume that blacks in America are uni-lingual, and only know English. Pero, no tengo tu nivel de español, tu fluidez es fantastico, muchas personas Mexicana aqui en Sur Carolina habla en español conmigo cuando voy comer en los restaurantes. But my Spanish isn’t on a level where I just walk up to people and start speaking, I’m not there yet. But you are correct, race is a big factor in why they do that.

Que raro bro. I totally relate. I speak Spanish at a high level and I think this has maybe only happened to me once at a gas station. Where I knew the cashier spoke Spanish… I assume it’s an insecurity thing on their end, And they just want to prove that they also learned both languages (it’s an ego thing)… it’s so weird, all of a sudden I’m entering a pissing contest when all I was tryna do was buy some gas bro. Lol fragile egos man. Even still, the most embarrassed I’ve ever been was when I assumed a waitress spoke Spanish but turned out to be a no sabo kid. I felt really bad that day. It is very rude, that she won’t except your Spanish. My coworker is from Salvador and my other coworker was talking Spanish to him and he would respond to her in English. She is a Spanish speaker since a child from Cuba, she got so mad, she told him off. He said to her I need to practice his English. She told him off again. He went to school here and college. It’s clear he doesn’t need to practice English. His wife does not speak Spanish fluently. So it’s not just mexicans. I just think people want to F**k with you. Next time tell them you don’t understand English that you speak French
