How is it legal to name your alt currency so similarly to an existing central-govt backed one? How can you use the name of an entity that you have no affiliation with unless you are the authorised issuer of United States Currency?
LITERALLY
To understand this company, you need to understand cryptocurrency. This company (Circle) didn’t create a currency at all. Instead, their platform runs on a cryptocurrency that already exists, called USDC, or “United States Dollar Coin.” In the US, there’s nothing illegal about using a similar name for a new cryptocurrency so long as it’s not the same name. USDC is a subcategory of cryptocurrency called a stablecoin. That means its value is relatively stable and not as volatile as other cryptocurrencies. That’s because its value is pegged directly to the United States dollar. 1 USDC is always worth exactly 1 USD. USDC has already been around for years and gets bought and sold in crypto exchanges and platforms like Coinbase every day. This product (Circle) is targeted at people who have at least an introductory to moderate understanding of cryptocurrencies and who feel comfortable using them more in daily life.
USDC's reserve assets are held in segregated accounts with regulated U.S. financial institutions. USD Coin is managed by Centre, a consortium co-founded by the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase (COIN), and Circle, a financial technology company.
