    Yes as a recently retired industrial electrician who worked in the industry 50 years I have had about 5 times that's once every 10 years so that's not bad considering that I have worked alongside very high voltages , so the best advice I can give any electrician is never to trust anything somebody tells you regarding informing you that a circuit is dead, never beleive anyone even if that person is experienced and well respected, you are at all times your own safety officer to protect yourself and any workmate or the general public , so my advice is to check , double check and when you lock that circuit is locked off don't put the key anywhere but your own person, even an experienced sparks like me who was a foreman on the new Silverstone Forula 1 circuit control building and conference building , we had sub contract testers so in one of the kitchens we had major problems with the supply fluctuating in voltages , so I called for the tester, he went through a series of tests , whilst this was happening he told me that a circuit was dead and like an idiot I took his word for it and proceded to get an electric shock, luckily it was not a shock which affected my muscles in regard of my grip not allowing me to free myself from the flow of electricity it was just one which made contact with the side of my pinky, so please the first commandment is only trust yourself but nobody else, I hope this advice is of some use to young electricians, luckily I'm nearly 70 , you lads need to stay safe so good luck

    Oh the Irony of this guy trying to teach us how to extend cables and then shows us using a crimping tool and crimps not designed to be used on solid core cables, when you have to educate the educator it is a sad day. In this particular instance an indent crimper is preferable and suitable crimp to match, stranded or fine stranded are suitable for the crimp tool and crimps he is showing as the wires easily form into the shape the crimp tool creates, a solid wire does not and often creates a poor crimp where the crimp itself is damaged or not formed properly.

  • @vman2kay
    @vman2kay Před 2 měsíci

    Would be nice if there was a video showing how to extend the cables/repair outside of a socket (say a drilled cable) as that's not really covered much :(

    • @genome616
      @genome616 Před 2 měsíci

      I would take caution to learning off youtube videos, the issue been even though a lot of the advice is good he actually is wrong in this video, that crimping tool and crimps are not to be used on solid core cable, they are suitable for stranded cores and thus he has demonstrated a method that can give a very poor joint.

    As mentioned elsewhere needed to explain what double insulation entails. And whether inline crimped connectors need to be in a separate box or can be embedded in a plaster wall like normal cables. It matters aesthetically esp as raising sockets higher in a listed property.

    Im conflicted with using butt crimps on solid conductors. They do make a good join if crimped correctly however they’re better suited for stranded conductors. In domestic work it’s probably fine but on ships or aircraft’s for example they could become loose overtime from vibration. Then again these installations probably use stranded cables to allow for movement

    Personally I do not bend bare copper wire over . I have opened wall sockets that have been in use for several years and found the bent wire broken and it just falls out of the terminal hole. Bending the wire back on itself creates a lot of stress on the copper which if it fractures could result in arcing inside the plug point.
