Thanks for posting! I had to watch this again as an 11 year old White Sox fan I enjoyed the Tiger victory, even though Gibson and Brock were 2 of my favs. Also, as a youngster from Illinois, I couldn't understand why all my first cousins from Allegan, MI were Yankee fans!
Unbelievable how much better baseball was in the 60's and 70's. Games lasted 2 hours, Starters finished games, players played because they loved the game, stars remained loyal to their teams!! Bob Gibson anywhere but St. Louis? Al Kaline anywhere but Detroit? it truly was AMERICA's PASTIME.
Roget Maris's last game in major league baseball.
All MLB players should send a check to the family of Curt Flood to objecting to the reserve clause rule years later leading to free agency.
I am getting confused. I though Jim Northrup hit a triple in 9th inning of game 7.
The only baseball I'll watch now
This is turn back the clock nostalgia, when all WS games were played in the daytime in stadiums that now exist only in old fans' memories and these black and white films. Gibson, Kaline, McCarver, Horton, Northrup, you are gone but not forgotten
Story about Mickey Lolich that I love: seems he was not having one of his better days and was slowly walking to the dugout after finally getting out of the inning. A little old lady sitting just behind the dugout screamed, "Hey Lolich, you call yourself an athlete?" He looked at her and said, " Lady, I'm a pitcher, nor a damned athlete."
1968, and a batting helmet was optional for the first Major League baseball player at bat in this video.
Brock became cocky is really what sank Cards
Fuuuuk YEAAAAAA!!!!!!!
There were 8 pitches in this inning that went to the catcher and back to the pitcher. Average time to start delivery of next pitch was 12.83 seconds. Faster than the current clock mandates. Also notice that many times batters never left the batter's box between pitches.
I saw Willie Horton hit one in Kansas City off the top center field scoreboard. If not it would have traveled out on Brooklyn avenue in the street,? Kurt Gowdy said it’s the hardest hit he ever saw. I’m convinced I saw the beginning of the longest hit in history in the making,? And it bounced off something else.
I remember this quake. I swear I had nothing to do with it. What was interesting was how long this quake lasted despite being a 5.9. It was a diabolical little quake that devastated Whittier and almost wiped it out. Whittier recovered but if one looks around hard enough especially in their old town area one can find scars of that quake
Beautiful fall day, 9yrs old walking home from school. On the corner of Flad & 39th in South St.Louis a crowd of kids are circled around one kid with a transistor radio. Harry Caray announcing the game Bob Gibson breaks Koufax strikeout record, and the whole corner absolutely erupts! "Holy Cow!"
Three magical seasons capped by stellar World Series' in '67, '68, and '69. Baseball's platinum age.
This is the last World Series that I didn’t see. I was just 6 and probably playing with my Hot Wheels cars. I remember the 1969 Series (Mets vs. Orioles) and every one since then. Go Cubs!
Saw the Tigers beat the A's in Oakland that year. Denny McLain won his 20th, 4-0. It was a joy to watch Detroit...they were a great team.
Remember when a game would last 90 minutes instead of 4 hours.
We had a 68 Skylark that must’ve been built on this very day…what a lemon!
Tough break for Flood, but as Harry Caray said, the same thing had happened to Jim Northrup earlier, so it all evened out.
Look @ the candyass helmets 2day
Where’s angel hernandez
Anyone recognize the voice of broadcaster
Seeing this unforgettable video in black and white takes me back to that day with my transistor radio at Northwest High School in St. Louis, my heart sinking with Northrup's hit evading the slipping Flood, who was a fabulous CF'er.
When I pitched in Little League those years I used Bob Gibson's windup, even the huge follow-through toward first base. Then again, when I batted I used Orlando Cepeda's stance, and even limped like him when I ran the bases.
Notice how, with a 4-0 lead in the 9th, soon to be 4-1, there was nobody warming up in the Tigers' bullpen. If that were today, Lolich would be gone after 100 pitches and they would have had 3 guys up throwing with a lead of 8-0 in the 9th and nobody on base.
Harry Caray, back before he became a self-parody with WGN in Chicago. Harry was absolutely brilliant and thrilling as the Cardinals PBP voice all across America when all those AM daytimer stations signed off at sunset and KMOX Radio's 50,000 watt signal covered most of the USA. Plus, with the Cardinals enjoying so many years as MLB's southernmost and westernmost franchise, Harry and the Cardinals made millions of fans in regions now served by expansion teams, but still with a soft spot for the Cardinals and Harry.
my right ear loved this video
I attended this game. I talked to Tony Kubek before the game. He was very nice to me. It rained before game 7 causing the grass to be wet and Curt Flood to loose his footing when he broke wrong on the ball hit by Northrup. Northrup also had a grand slam during game 6. Mike Shannon had a home run during the 9th inning of game 7 to make it closer.
What song is 5:18
I remember those days. Starting pitcher bats for himself in the 9th inning. I miss complete games.
😃The Grand Slam Kid 👏👏👏👍Love❤️23🙏
Lolich with 3 wins in this series after McClain won 31 games that year
This was back in a day when the whole country was fixated on the World Series. Now it is an afterthought. Ask 100 people on the street who won the most recent World Series and I doubt 10 of them could come up with the correct answer.
I turned 8 and played LL ball in 1969. I never watched baseball until 1969. I never saw this game but I soon became familiar with all these names as I also began collecting cards in 1969. These name were legendary to me.
The unbeatable Bob Gibson was finally beaten. It was the Tigers year
68 and 84 Tigers were grrrreat....they have pretty much sucked the rest of my life.
I only remember some of the scores, because I was 19,years old,and with the 1st Cavalry,in Viet Nam,at 75 years old this is the first time I have seen these great games!Duty CalledThomas A.Filipiak
I was 2 yrs old at the time and our family lived in Detroit. As my dad told the story….he said that after the Tigers won he went to the airport to welcome the team back but the crowd was so large that the Tigers diverted their plane to another airport nearby and left the huge crowd standing alone. Not sure if the team was supposed to land at Detroit Metro and diverted to Willow Run Airport, or the other way around, but for years my dad talked about how disappointed everybody was. The ‘68 Tigers were an amazing team though. What a comeback.
Defeating the invincible Bob Gibson.
I was 16 and the memories are all coming back now, thank you.
Why Mickey Lolich is not in Cooperstown is amazing.
Gibson didn’t come to much of a pause in his stretch… was that not a thing back then?
Harry Caray on the call for NBC!
This is also the World Series where Jose Feliciano changed everything by singing a beautiful, but not standard, version of the National Anthem before Game 5. czcams.com/video/aQkY2UFBUb4/video.html
I recognize that voice, Harry Carey, doing radio for the cards, years before switching to the Cubs.
I am assuming this is the same Jim Northrup who played for Alma College in the late 50's? If so, i pitched against Jim while pitiching for K-College..
Is that Harry Carey calling the game?
No batting helmets
