I have neve actually seen the 1984 film, but I read the book around about 2000 when my dad picked up an old copy of some George Orwell collection at a car boot sale, so surprisingly before morgoth despite me beng around 10-15 years younger. Obviously at the time the messaging largely went over my very young head. I re read it in 2020 during the COVID nonsense. I think endeavour is right about it being very on the nose, but I think that is kind of the point of it. Also the concept was fairly new at the time of writing, so I think we can credit Orwell with his somewhat lack of subtlety on that.
