I'm cautiously optimistic about Toyota's proposed solid state batter that charges in 10min and gives 1200KM on ideal conditions per charge They are more environmentally friendly than standard Li-Ion we currently use in EV's. Once we solve solid state batteries downsides it should revolutionize and dramatically lower our carbon output.

Amazing Video Ron This year is barely half over and has been a staggering reminder of our actions on this planet and the lack of policy and attempts to actually anything done. Based on this topic I think a global effort both financially and in policy to make this happen is needed. This is kind of like the way the scientific community banded together to help create the first vaccines for COVID-19 Anything we can do we should be trying to do. SMRs, to help offset solar and wind inconsistencies and to remove our relaunch on coal and oil and gas I'm curious though though using solar sails would this block enough sun that us in the northern hemisphere that we would have potentially longer nights and shorter days this could impact food production if true **Edit should have waited to end of video to post about the longer nights shorter days portion of my comment

Thanks for mentioning my book Ron. Here are a few thoughts: You mentioned the Earth's energy balance in space. If the world is getting hotter, which the general consensus says that it is, then doesn't it make sense to maximize the heat radiation the way that nature does, by maximizing heat radiation at the poles? If we can generate clean, renewable power in the process, then all the better. If we tap into the energy source I discuss in the book, it will eventually lead to a surplus of inexpensive energy around the world which will make things like atmospheric carbon capture possible. We can actively control the gasses in the atmosphere, if we have enough abundant inexpensive energy. Per your video and NASA's work, the optimal amount of CO2 in the atmosphere for plant growth is about 1200 ppm. Just think if we could have that level of CO2 and live comfortable lives with the ecosystems of the world enhanced with water for the deserts, to make them productive. Earth could easily sustain 20 billion people with productive deserts, and floating cities, and an intelligent use of resources available to us. Another interesting side effect of having more carbon in the atmosphere would be that the treeline, as seen in the mountains, would rise. The reason the treeline exists is because the concentration of CO2 at those altitudes is too low for the trees to be able to perform photosynthesis effectively. The website is infiniteresourcesbook.com/

Going to reread Oppenheimer Alternative, now that I've seen the Christopher Nolan movie. Glad the theater had a caption device. It usually mentions which character is speaking, as compared to my transcribe app, which gets things hilariously wrong. When it comes to history, what was said is occasionally less important than who was saying it. I'm also a fan of Sims, and multiple save files can give the "what if?" I've played out some of those. But Rob's vision of the "what if?" with Oppenheimer? I enjoyed it. I'm curious if he'll do a different alternate history at some point. My friends in the SCA have taught me different histories, different time periods. But those involving world altering science? That's definitely a big deal. As far as living in a trash can? Well, Rob knows, there have been points in my life when that would have been a step up for me. Now, I can go to karaoke night, and sing Oscar the Grouch's version! But to do it on a trip to Alpha Centauri? Hold that thought, let me dig out a suitcase while I consider this. Sorry kids, I'll miss you, but had to get my name in print one way or another. Try not to blow up the Earth while I'm gone?

Excellent interview about AI Risks into the future. David Brin’s speech should be spread across many platforms to interested parties and platforms for the public. Also, I hope experienced technologists/scientists are brainstorming ideas to bring AI in measured balance along its trajectory, which is about to explode and possibly get out of control. We are in a frenzy, building infinite (and sometimes finite) possibilities, which are terrifying yet exciting, and there’s no stopping it. It all depends on human intelligence and the needs for whatever invention, which is embedded into these language models, in the first place. For ill or good, it will be interesting to see what happens, and it may mushroom on both sides of the moral fence, for quite some time into the future. As a global phenomena, this puts another spin on how AI technology is traded, shared and used. Thank you Ron, for sharing this!

I loved the interview. I just want to object to Rob's comment that the only thing that Musk has delivered with regards to Starship is "a lot of spectacle." That is of course true if you are just looking at the Starship program. But it completely overlooks the fact that SpaceX has completely revolutionized launching material into space. Last year SpaceX launched more rockets into space than all other rocket companies and counties space programs combined. Rob's comment disregards that the last test and the other tests before it were just that, tests. I expect the next test, which will have a much better launch platform, designed for the incredible rocket thrust, will be more successful. (Debris from the launch likely damaged some of the engines near the start of the process.) Moving away from hydro-mechanical controls to electronic controls for the engine positioning system will likely be a step in the right direction as well. I expect that the next test will be more successful, but I recognize that it too is still just a test. Musk and SpaceX are living out the Scouts saying: plan-do-review. I'm also not convinced that Musk has ruined Twitter either. I've been using the platform a lot more since the transition in leadership, and I applaud a lot of the changes. I should say that I really enjoyed reading "The Oppenheimer Alternative." I thought that the ending was particularly brilliant. As always, I enjoy listening to Rob's insights, even if I don't always agree with everything he says. 🙂

I address that in the introduction of the book: "I’m sure that lots of people look at the title and say to themselves, “How can we have infinite resources on a finite planet?” I used the term infinite in two ways: first, what I will describe are resources we can’t tap out for many generations, if ever; second, while the Sun has a finite mass, the energy that it supplies will last for billions of years, so compared to our brief lives, it is essentially infinite and renewable. The oceans have a finite amount of water, yet the fresh water rain they provide is an inexhaustible resource that has been constantly replenished from the formation of Earth. Those are the ways I’m using the term infinite."

I love the video! We need more of this channel! I think something interesting to ponder and perhaps add to your list of future ideologies is what we eat as humans. This is not only an interesting scientific question, but it is also an ethical and environmental one. I think everyone can agree at a base level, that what we do to animals is at the very least causing suffering, which in future ideologies and worlds we would want to minimize. We would inevitably want to stop eating animals/ consuming their products as these consumption habits cause immense unnecessary suffering. An example of this can be seen in Star Trek in the form of the Vulcan's which are vegetarian (they may not have word or have an equivalent to vegan as they may not have milk or egg consumption), the Vulcan's using their logic deduced that eating sentient animals that feel pain and suffer just as they do is unethical because it is not necessary for their survival. Coming back to earth and modern times, we as humans on earth today cause much of the environmental disaster through the decisions we make for what we are going to have for lunch. Animal agriculture requires vast amounts of land (we slaughter 70 ish billion land animals every year) so we need to feed, and hydrate those animals. That requires much more water and plant food than we as humans could ever eat. Furthermore cows emit green house gasses through their belches and farts (around 25% of global emissions are because of animal agriculture). So currently we have a less ethical, less environmentally friendly and a less efficient food system that could feed everyone on earth and then some, but we choose a mcdonalds cheeseburger because it tastes great. Which it does, I am not denying that. To use a bad pun, its just food for thought. I think this is something worth taking into consideration.

This video makes a very big assumption that differing ideologies are what push change and rule the world where in fact it is our material realities that creates these ideologies in the first place. Capitalism was not and is not an ideology, it is an economic system that came up out of feudalism, it came out of material reality as an economic system and was later supported by ideologies like liberalism which advocate for capitalism and has been the dominant ideology for a long time to this day. No one invented capitalism or was an ideologe of it for it to come about and change history, it came out naturally. As such the change capitalism pushed was not caused by people believing in it but out of material reality.

I enjoyed watching this video! Just the other day I was thinking about one of the issues mentioned - that of having diversity in available governance. This was an important part of the period of the American frontier and old colonialism which was a release valve for societies where those who didn't like the status quo could move and start fresh on different terms, more free to pursue things the way they desire. Even today, in the United States, for example, there is a form of a release valve still around: the variations among states in governing styles allow people to effectively select their political and governing environments to a degree. You could freely choose to live in California or Texas, Minnesota or South Dakota, etc. etc. It's important that there's always some sort of "frontier" that people can move to, so they don't feel like cornered rats. I'll definitely take some time later to think about these issues you brought up. Good job on making this!

I am thinking about those issue too. No clear idea yet. For now it's just a stream of consciousness. We may have a new age of pioneers when we'll build new societies in space.

  • @solarionispirit2117

It is not that complicated. When you see AI art and in the background a blurred Shutterstock or whatever logo, you just imagine where the other images comes from.
