Simple explanation of how to perform an oil change on your 986 Boxster (1997-2004) this process should be largely the same for 996, 987 and 997 Porsches as well. Analysis of the oil filter included some plastic fragments from the timing chain guides. 8 of these can be serviced with the engine out and partially disassembled, servicing the IMS chain tensioner requires splitting the two engine cas...

Replacing the original cigarette lighter in my 986 Boxster with an updated version from a 997. Early Boxsters and 911s came with a DIN standard lighter, which is slightly larger than US standard lighters and doesn’t fit power accessories very well. Thankfully, a brand new original Porsche lighter from the 997 generation 911 is a plug and play upgrade, and only about $45 all in.

Replacing the broken headrest in my W204 C300. These have SRS devices in them that punch out to support your head in the event of airbag deployment, which can be reset. However, the plastic adjustment hinge on mine had broken, warrantying a replacement with a good condition used item.
Porsche Boxster (986) Seat Recovering

Recovering both of the seats in my 986 Boxster with new covers from Lseat.com. It took a bit of prodding via email to receive these, and lead time was a couple of months after payment. The material quality is higher than I expected and they fit well after some massaging. Recovering both seats probably took 15hrs altogether.

Reinstalling a Porsche 986 Boxster convertible soft top after repairing the foam drip trays. If your Boxster has water under the seats, it is most likely because the foam drip trays have been punctured. I cleaned them thoroughly and then used a 2-part marine epoxy to seal the holes- after numerous tests and a couple of rainstorms, I no longer have water collecting under the seats.

where did you buy that mid-way lift?
Jesus Christ it’s 96 degrees out today and i gotta do ALL THAT? Great video, but you broke my heart
Is that a manual transmission? I have one also. Where are you getting your parts for it? My car came with the V6 272 and a 6 speed manual transmission 716
Hi Michael, good eye, yes- it is a 6 speed manual, with the 716.671 transmission. A rare bird to be sure. I get my parts from FCPEuro, I've had good luck buying OE and OEM parts from them and their customer service is second to none.
I worked for MB for about 9 years and never seen one, do you have a service manual for your vehicle, not the owners manual, if so where did you get it
Any idea on where I can get a replacement shifter for the manual transmission? Mercedes wants over $380
@@michaelm6900 I do not have a service manual unfortunately- keeping my eye out though, and will let you know if I find a factory service manual
@@michaelm6900 I've been looking for one as well, i've found some for other Mercedes models that would probably fit, but I would like an original piece
what size are the 2 smaller T30 bolts? Are the T30 M6 16m??
Great question- I am not sure of the thread and length. I just checked a Mercedes-Benz parts diagram but did not see the bolts called out. M6 x 16mm is a good guess, I remember most of the bolts in this assembly threading into thru holes so length should not be a major concern. I will let you know if I get more concise information about this!
👍
Awesome footage!
3/16" Drill bit fits perfect

Hah! I bet you can tackle this!
Nice video bro!
Very nice vid and detail thanks very helpful
Thanks for this video. I saw another tutorial where they wanted me to remove the fan and a bunch of other stuff but I did it ur way and it worked. The only tricky thing I found was getting the connector off the sensor but I used some long needle nose pliers and it worked.
This guy's living my life 😅
Another solid upload by Northeast Bavarian!
My 2006 Mini Cooper S uses the exact same bushings (same part number), and I just replaced them with the help of this video. Thanks!
Thank you
Did you end up having to replace the plastic tensioners?
I believe these ones still have some life left, as my camshaft deviation values (variation from a reference angle between the camshafts and crankshaft) are still within spec. I plan on tackling this issue when I have more project space. Be advised, this is not a simple undertaking- replacing all 9 timing chain guides involves removing the engine and disassembling it completely.
I just did this watching your video. Took me 10 mins. Thank you sir. Without videos like this we probably will paid hundreds at the dealership. This job cost me $10 bucks
Happy to hear it, comments like yours make it so worth it to document these repairs.
Are those Black Clips from a stock seat back insert? Can't find a part # for those...
Yes, as far as I know those are stock. From everything I gathered doing this, these seats had never been recovered or otherwise touched. I don't know a Porsche part number offhand but will reply again if I find one.
My friend your video is pointless. You should have done the whole repair start to finish on video.
I'm sorry you feel that it is pointless. I look forward to a video from you, showing us the way it's done!
@@northeastbavarian4249 touché, I’m actually working on one, I won’t post it here though I’ll let you know where it’s posted when it’s done. I just meant all the parts pre done or cut out should have been shown. Cars are not my specialty electronics are, therefore there are some people like myself that genuinely need it step by step visible, I’ll admit it. Take it easy mate.
Very informative and attention to detail, underrated channel!
Yo just wanna say to all the people who opened the comments for answers: you dont need to open nothing if your hands are size 10 and blew open the cap of the headlights and press on the metall bar into the light it should open and then gently pull the light out “ be careful “! And the switch and do the sane for the smaller lights open the smaller caps and do the same!
This sounds like good advice, just a bit unclear- could you clarify what you mean?
Did drying it get rid of the codes it was throwing? Or did you have to replace any fuses/wiring components..? I have the same problem unfortunately.
Luckily, drying the car out thoroughly got rid of everything. I don't remember having to clear any codes at all.
Thanks for the video, now I don't have to break it.
IDK man. I would have put the seat hearer in there anyway. Lol It would have filled the leather up better and look better if nothing else. If you still have it I’d try. Worst case its 💩 and you take it out again. Lol
I would like to re-tackle this at some point, probably just with a good used cover. It's low on the priority list, but I'll upload another video of that when I get it done!

Do you know the part number for the freeze plugs?
Or the size of them?
They are Dorman 555012 :)
Ty appreciate it
I replaced secondary air injection solenoid valve and the check engine light came back on so I’m thinking I have to clean out the manifold ports too.
@@shibbyslayr1 it sounds like that is the case, the car in this video was diagnosed at the dealer as needing the ports cleaned, new valve and pump. I could hear the pump run on cold starts so I suspected it was okay. I knew that his car had been driven sporadically and not up to temperature over the past couple years, so I jumped straight to the ports and cleaning them solved my check engine light.
This is great, thank you. Doing mine in the next week or so. Awesome to SEE the bottom cushion pops out without needing to remove entire seat out of the car..
H code?
I believe the standard cars use an H11, while the AMG styling package cars (like mine shown here) use an H7
@@northeastbavarian4249 AMG I want to install the H7 LED bulb I have, but there is no tab to fit on.
@@fatihcatal692 So you have to unplug the wiring harness (pigtail) from the socket on the fog light assembly, then rotate the socket on the fog light assembly about 10 degrees counterclockwise (looking forward). the socket and bulb will come out, and then you can replace the bulb and reinstall the socket. I can post a video for you if you can't get it with these instructions.
@@northeastbavarian4249 I removed the fog bulb and I want to install a LED bulb, but there is no tab on the bulb for the LED bulb to sit on.
@@fatihcatal692 I see what you mean- I know those aftermarket LED bulbs often have a large heat sink where the normal H7 plug is. That will likely require some engineering to make that fit- alternatively, find an LED bulb with a normal H7 form factor that had the plug in the right spot.
Okay so what bulb are you using.

What’s that thing call you take out from under the windshield?
Perhaps you mean the "cowl"? That's the piece that covers the wiper arms.
I have a misfire 1347 code and some times shows the scanner fault con this sensor, can this sensor faulty cut off and back the fuel on the cylinder? Thank you
it is possible that this sensor could cause a misfire, but I would also look at other items- check your spark plugs and coil packs first.
I have a W204 C180 Coupe. Will it work for my car ?
Yes, same brake system on your C180.
Way over engineered. Absurd amount of work to just remove the headlight assembly.
This isn't an order of magnitude more difficult than most other modern cars.
@northeastbavarian4249 yes. It is. This is asinine.
I just replaced the bottom and upper seat covers on my 2014 C250 COUPE. Bottom just like the video . Top one requires neckpro headrest removal which on the 250 COUPE is unique not like on the sedan . Key trick is to raise the headrest fully before removing the seat from the car , unclip the 3 headrest post clips and power wire beneath post then can yank it free of the black clip on the toothed motor arm. The OEM covers and handle were almost $900 at the stealership but the final install looks factory new. Did a couple you tube videos but they are hard to find . The six white clips on the back of the upper are difficult to reattach so used 3/0 saltwater fishing barrel swivels clipped into them to ease pulling them through the seat foam to the long wire across the back of the seat . Have to remove the hard back shell but not the lower side covers and loosen the airbag to get to the side clips of the upper seat cover. Auto trim tool pops all the plastic tabs around the perimeter out. A pencil type soldering iron makes clean holes in the cover backside tube fabric to reattach the 6 white clips and at the bottom to allow access to the two final cover torx screws at bottom . Will get 3 airbag codes even with battery disco so have a tool to clear them or car will disable after 1-2 starts .
This is really great insight- thank you!
On my e39 my expansion tank is in the way, so I have to remove it
Replace the valve , the pump , and do the cleaning , if there’s still a code clean it again
I actually just performed the cleaning and cleaned the valve. I did not replace the valve or pump. 5k trouble free miles so far.
thanks
Where can I find the hose for the rear from the pump to the connection by the battery. Having the hardest time finding it
Try looking for it under "windshield washer hose" at rockauto. Consider removing the hose to verify the shape of it, and match it to the item pictures that you see. If you can't find it that way, you might need to dive in to parts diagrams.
Hit it with a heat gun to help shrink the vinyl
Nice video, i did this and the code still came back , how about you ?
The code did not come back for me. Check your secondary air pump and secondary air valve, those may cause the code as well.
@northeastbavarian4249 I cleared the ports, put new freeze plugs, and added a new secondary air valve still have engine code on
Nice clear video. Thanks
My bolt stripped under the pressure of a small Allen key🙃
Try getting to it with some vice grips or pliers, then replace it with a new bolt when you get it out.
@@northeastbavarian4249 I ended up using easy outs and buying a new bolt and a spare for $0.20 🤣
Great video. Simple and straightforward.
Is it possible for the air pump to cause a slight judder sensation when stopping at the lights for eg, especially on colder starts?
Difficult to say- I would not think so, it would definitely be drawing more heavily on alternator which could sap engine power, but I never noticed strange cold start stopping behavior. Check your transmission fluid and brakes.
Hi nice video and I have 2007 c200 Mercedes avant-garde need to change the driver side fog light, can you tell me what part number or where can I buy it?
my car is a 2008 with the AMG styling package. I'm not sure which lights the Avant-Garde trim uses, but these are the ones I used. It should be easy to identify if they are correct from the ebay pictures www.ebay.com/itm/144132486995?hash=item218ef73753:g:MHUAAOSw~ZRhA8Vd&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA8FW0RMGIeQx%2FYLegA9UduUv7KMYqN13HXNawERYb3ijGGoEpKAEssVFWhse2dUpCdy6RfcDK1qwNCxGjB3%2BJ9M19Iwn7GJV0nGtRfnToE6LrNR3fYY1s0qJcIP%2BblOccb8mx2V8JvxPLZaZbsgiot%2F2Q36NIrEgbF5IMrpxfbYZUwX1uyNWN8oY%2FD%2BvxpGcVdwXWwYIF41Yi2c%2FxIw%2B6SKLh6tENCYTmspJuhFJ6YANapkmMQsMymoPrlrlmQScCykzSmmIiVHZ69ZE%2BCwsLiTEbTJnUnKdfipoocpjN4tZUenC5myV97%2FyXOmTZ9al3Bw%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR46j-rjcYQ
