This is my take on the narrative: Mary loved her hometown, and as the towns librarian she fought Potter as best she could without George. The library could be the way out for any poor but clever kid living in Pottersville, and a place for kids to dream bigger just as George did as a kid when he was at the library. Remember Violet taunting George for spending too much time just reading about things at the library. The way Mary dressed as a working woman was, as I see it, just that: her working uniform. That she did not marry does not mean she did not have a social life, that is just what so many read into her looks that afternoon she meet a total stranger yelling at her on her way home. That she choose a life without husband and kids does not make her a failure as a woman. Not even in the 1940'. She was a fighter even without George, she just did it differently in Pottersville where her "librarian look" was a statement of independents. She did not work for Potter or marry anyone crawling for him. Potter hated his "cattle" to think for themselves so Mary worked in the one place any person in Potterville could come and better themselves. I think it's genius.

The problem was that she was flawless. If she only had a fault or two: a weakness for alcohol, tough men, Bolshevism, pro wrestling, or maybe a quick temper, then George may have saved her from herself.

And now you know why Frank Capra fell out of the limelight and became unfashionable by the 1950s, and why he so vehemently resented and hated Hollywood by the 1960s.

"On the bridge" indeed. Lots of people are like George Bailey on the bridge these days. Most of the Bedford Fallses of my youth has become more like Pottersville. Fighting against creeping Potter-ism, i.e., greed and cynicism leading to alienation, isolation, despair is sine qua non of modern life.

What ? The reason it became a classic was the director, writing and acting. And it being released into the public domain

How can one single person be the reason a movie does well? Couldn’t the cast or the director have something to do with the success of this movie, or any other movie for that matter.

Yes - it is a rather one-sided self-congratulatory video Never-the-less it does represent an important factor - that the film was freed of the copyright clearly was a factor to the film being re-evaluated. After all on original release it was by no means a big success and seen as a rather poor Christmas Carol derivative. Timing of the original film was not great, and time has been wonderfully kind to it.

I'm old enough to know of Peggy Lipton and Mod Squad as well as having my social studies teacher bring in the tv during class when the Watergate hearings were going on. I will say that it had slipped my mind that Ms. Lipton is Ms. Jones' mother, but I remembered her dad was Quincy Jones. And one of these days I will watch the movie (I have seen clips over the years, just like before I ever watched Gone With the Wind - of course one of those clips is the famous Carol Burnett skit). Thanks for the clip.

I'm so sick of hearing about the 'greatest' generation. never was there a more homophobic, racist, misogynistic bunch. I've worked with that generation my whole adult life, and they are hard, damaged stubborn people, unwilling to change, or see anything from anyone else's perspective. When you experience the full force of hatred from one of that bunch, you start to question how 'great' can ever be used in connection with them.

Interesting perspective. Are you sure that hatred has not just been suppressed and buried? Antisemitism, as a good example, never goes away. The "other" is instinctively distrusted and even feared, no matter your difference from the mob. Family structure is the most seminal kernel of a healthy community and a healthy society. We are being preyed upon, and divided. G-d bless our world with clarity and truth. That only will save humanity.
