@@LG-RC The Mark 39 EMATT is a fairly small expendable yet recoverable and reusable ASW target. It was made by Sippican but exported to many US allied countries. There is highly likely that the other major arms-producing countries which have various ASW forces have produced similar training tools like the Mark 39 EMATT. For the real hard cases building the Rolls Royce models of RC underwater craft, one might consider the Mark 30 mobile ASW target which uses a heavyweight torpedo body as the basis for the Mark 30 target. The Russians produce a torpedo countermeasure for use on their submarines that is similar in purpose. If the vehicle will operate at shallow depths, then the body casing can be restricted to plastic pipe. Using higher-grade materials might permit operations at greater depths but this is not practical.

Towed antenna would be an option but you are absolutely correct in regards to the survivabillity., due to other subs or obstacles in the water. Thanks for watching.

That’s correct . Although new radio technology 2.4ghz/ 900mhz is providing the best of both worlds. The 2.4ghz provides the range while surface running as well as telemetry and the 900mhz provides the penetrating power for submerged operations. Most of our group is still using the MHz equipment, but as it starts to fail and availability is very limited we will probably all gravitate to the 2.4ghz/900mhz equipment.

Interesting, I was going to ask a similar question. I fly fixed-wing RC planes primarily; started off in the early 1990’s on 72 MHz (when I was initially learning to fly RC), then moving to the 50 MHz. amateur band since I’ve been a licensed radio amateur from 1969; using the 50 MHz. ham band meant that I rarely had to wait for an open frequency back in the days when a frequency board & clothespins were standard practice at virtually all RC aircraft fields. (& woe betide the careless RC pilots who switched on their transmitters blindly & “shot down” someone’s plane! Besides a getting a “bad rap”, virtually all RC clubs I belonged to had a rule that if you “shot down” someone else’s plane that way, you were FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE for replacing it!). Now I fly on 2.4 GHz. Digital spread- spectrum like everyone else, mostly park - flying small or micro planes; when I did return to my old RC club after a few years, it was interesting to see that the old frequency board had been retired! Since it seems like RC submariners use 2.4 GHz. only on the surface, how deep can you safely dive on 900 or 75 MHz.? I’m also curious on radio range when operating submerged; how far distance is reliable? BEAUTIFUL models, by the way! 😊

I can’t speak for the dual band radios from experience as all of our group is still using 75mhz , as far as range while submerged I typically can go out about 40-50 yards at periscope depth without any problems. Hardest part is keeping a visual on the boat. Once closer to shore I can run up to 6 feet deep before my fail safe kicks in and automatically surfaces the boat. I would imagine the dual frequency radios would have the same limitations.
