    @DrWestlake Před 4 dny

    This is a horrible take on Jerry Dipoto... The problem is our ownership, plain and simple... You also have to consider how we got here... In 2020, we were running out prospects in a shortened season, and as part of the rebuild all teams use the first year to find diamonds (Kyle Lewis, Ty France, etc.), gaining long-term cheap value, burn off old contracts (Strange-Gordon, Encarnacion, Bruce, etc.), and then starting to determine what holes needed to be filled... As bad as our offense was at the time, we had Lewis winning ROY, Julio a year away from when he was ROY, and Kelenic on his heels... We looked like we might have the best young outfields in baseball with Trammell as the 4th OF, White and Crawford just won GG, we had a past GG 3B in Seager, all we needed in the next year was a second baseman, a catcher, and a ton of pitching... Our best reliever was Anthony Misiewicz (3.04 FIP), Casey Sadler (3.29 FIP), and Taylor Williams (3.56 FIP), yet the only reliever with more than 10 IP and an ERA below 4.00 was Yohan Ramirez with a 2.61 ERA, 20.2 IP, 9 H, 20 BB, 26 SO and a 6.05 FIP. Our ace was Marco Gonzales, followed by two more lefties Justus Sheffield and YUsei Kikuchi... Our rotation was a bunch of soft tossing lefties (also had Margevicius), and two average righties who have dealt with a ton of injuries (Dunn and Walker). He had to feel better about the offense going forward than the pitching. In 2021, Seager took a small step back, and then decided to hang them up after the season. Crawford took a step forward, France was useful, Fraley flashed some potential, and Haniger returned to form in a big way, while White and Lewis were the victim of the injury bug. This was our first great bullpen, while not perfect Sewald emerged as a top closer option by the end of the season, Sadler and Graveman became elite setup guys, Steckenrider, Chargois, Swanson, and Castillo were useful mid- to high-leverage arms, while Misiewicz and Hector Santiago became useful lefties in the pen. Again our rotation was mid with Gilbert (3.73 FIP) broke out and became our best starter in his rookie season, while our rotation filled out behind him with Chris Flexen, Tyler Anderson, Yusei Kikuchi, and Marco Gonzales. Sheffield (6.83 ERA, 5.66 FIP) was our #6 and almost completely pitched his way out of the league by the end of the season. Needless to say, we had improved, but the main focus needed to be on improving the rotation with some top options, as well as filling in some of the bigger holes on the team... Raleigh was seen as a long-term solution, while Murphy was brought back to pair with him and stabilize the position. It also appeared that 1B was set with a young Ty France, J.P. Crawford was cheap, good defensively, and now a league average bat, but we were going to need to replace Seager's power, second base was still a blackhole, Kelenic was seen as a potential breakout, Lewis was due to be healthy, and Julio would be making his debut, allowing Haniger and Lewis to rotate in RF and DH, so they could avoid too much wear-and-tear on their bodies. In 2022, we returned to the postseason, as Robbie Ray stabilized the rotation, we got a breakout performance from Kirby, GIlbert took another big step forward, while Gonzales and Flexen were serviceable as our fourth and fifth starters, until Castillo was acquired, so we then had two potential aces, two young studs, and Gonzales/Flexen as our 5th and 6th starters. Our rotation finally looked very competitive, our bullpen was great, as we added Munoz, Brash, Murfee, and Festa to compliment Sewald, Swanson, and Castillo, though Sadler was lost to injuries and other trusted relievers began to regress. Despite an already loaded bullpen complimenting our great starters, it was our surprising offense that was more than expected. Volatility is a typical problem when dealing with young players and rebuild... Crawford and France were as expected, repeating their 2021 performances, however Rodriguez arrived early and was a star in CF along with Raleigh breaking out as a top flight catcher, Haniger and Murphy dealt with injuries but were still productive players when available, and then Suarez and Moore returned to being very productive players. There were disappointments though, as Santana, Winker, and Frazier all had some of their worst seasons in the MLB, combined with the stunted growth of Kelenic and Trammell, while Lewis basically started his slow disappearance into retirement with another injury riddled season. Upton was acquired as a flyer and besides his walk-off homerun and his influence as a veteran player, he was very underwhelming. Entering 2023, we had an awesome rotation of Robbie Ray, George Kirby, Logan Gilbert, and Luis Castillo with Marco Gonzales starting the season as our #5 starter... Ray was injured in his 1st start of the season and following Flexen becoming absolutely unplayable as our #5 starter, just four starts into everyone being moved up a spot in the rotation, we were forced to promote Bryce Miller, and then shortly after that Marco was injured and we needed a new #5 starter, which led to Woo being promoted around mid-season. The acquisitions of Topa, Speier, Gott, Thornton, Saucedo, and Bazardo were excellent, Campbell and Adcock were useful rookies, and Brash became one of the best relievers in the game, while Sewald and Munoz held down the 8th and 9th innings. Our offense last year was all above-average contributors except for Kolten Wong, who was so bad it undermined an offense that included young two-way stars in Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh, and J.P. Crawford. Teoscar (108 OPS+) and Kelenic (111 OPS+), were good corner outfield options, France and Suarez were league average bats, and Mike Ford (124 OPS+) was a good DH for 83 games. Our bench also had above-average performers in Dylan Moore, Tom Murphy, Josh Rojas, Sam Haggerty, and Cade Marlowe. Once we dumped Wong, we were above-average offensively from #1-13, and had we not carried Wong's 35 OPS+ for nearly half the season, we would've made the playoffs again, as he literally cost us the two or three games that get us in the playoffs.

    • @DrWestlake
      @DrWestlake Před 4 dny

      This reviews proves that they have methodically built this team and made them progressively better. If I told you we took last years team and replaced Kelenic with Arozarena, Teoscar Hernandez with Mitch Haniger and Dom Canzone, Kolton Wong with Jorge Polanco, and then run it back with Raleigh, Crawford, and J-Rod in the middle of the field, while adding Luke Raley in a corner and Mitch Garver as our DH, there is no reasonable way you would consider us to be worse than we were offensively in 2023, a year when we had 13 hitters with 100+ PA & >100 OPS +, we should be a top 5 to 10 offense... It hasn't helped that stupid fans are giving death threats to Mitch Garver for struggling, as if that's going to solve anything, especially make him a better player. The biggest knock has been on Jerry and Co. trying to augment the lineup with guys like Mike Ford, AJ Pollock, Kolton Wong, Adam Frazier, and other guys who are past 30 years old, and unreliable performers. As far as I see it, anyone other than our current front office is most likely going to be worse, as it's a 1% chance we hit the lottery on player development, trade acquisitions, team building, and luck. The last one being the biggest problem. If Julio, J.P., and Ty don't slump all year, Crawford and Julio get injured, while our bullpen gets destroyed with injuries, we're probably the best team in baseball right now. While it's not an exact science, I'd be willing to be that with a healthy Brash, Santos, and Speier, we win 5-6 more games. Add a healthy and productive Crawford (100-110 OPS+), Rodriguez (>125 OPS+), and Polanco (>110 OPS+), that win total probably jumps from 5-6 with Brash and Santos to closer to 10-12 more wins. That kind of added win total would make us one of the best teams in all of baseball tying us with the Dodgers at 76 wins through tonight (supposing we wouldn't have stolen one of the three games we just lost. I agree they could've done more at the deadline, but looking ahead to next year, we are too close to building a perennial monster... The biggest issue we have is trying to spread the money around the diamond and not have any stars, but then we end up paying $55M to Polanco, Garver, Haniger, and Crawford to be below-average players offensively... There's still hope for these guys to get above 100 OPS+ for the season, but only Crawford is a good defender who adds value outside of his bat... We would be better adding Juan Soto on a $600M/15 year deal ($40M/season) and keeping Crawford at SS ($11M), dumping Polanco, Garver, and Haniger to other teams, even if we had to eat a little money, take back a mid-level contract, or add a #15-25 prospect from our system to not have to cover any of the money, while using league average players (Cole Young type rookies or Vosler type veterans) to fill out our roster. One solution could be sending Castillo and Polanco to the Nationals, along with 3B Ben Williamson (Northern Viriginia native) for 2B Luis Garcia Jr. and SP prospect Travis Sykora. This adds a great arm in the Logan Gilbert mold to our farm system, while clearing $35M off our books, the same money that will become available for the Nationals when Patrick Corbin becomes a free agent. This gives the Nationals an affordable ace for the next four years, something they will need to be competitive in NL East, while clearing off the money needed to pay Juan Soto. It would be a massive overpay, but one that nobody else will match, nor will Juan Soto want to reject, especially getting to play alongside Julio for the rest of their careers, as Julio's option would keep him a Mariner for up to 15 more years, as well... Fun side note, Victor Robles and Juan Soto were very close as teammates on the 2019 Nationals WS team, something that could lead to Victor and Julio working to recruit Soto to the PNW. As much as the team has under-invested in the team in hopes of sliding into the playoffs with a slighty above-average win total, saying we need to make any major to our front office or coaching staff, while our ownership refuses to invest in the team, does nothing more than rearrange deck chairs on a sinking ship, when the chances are that whatever solution they come up with will more likely than not be worse than what we already have currently. To put this in perspective, if you take away Soto and Judge, our offense has been almost as good as the Yankees team, while our pitching is many times better... We add Soto in the offseason and we'd be the W.S. favorites, that's not a team screaming for a teardown.

    The owners have already shown, repeatedly, it isn’t about winning for them. We all should understand that by now. So, go to games and enjoy the evening out and don’t wreck your outing by complaining about the team or the hydro races or the price of beer. I wish I could choose that route but for the past two years I’ve been determined to not give ownership any of my money. No Comcast/Root. I’ll go to games if someone gives me a ticket but that’s it. With the team being such a predictable dumpster fire I find the 10 minute CZcams recaps plenty sufficient to get the picture. Plus, I find the Seattle Times comment section to be more entertaining than the actual games!

Manager I don't know I don't trust this Ownership making those hires because they're fucking idiots no baseball knowledge period. This team needs a miracle even for a team office rebuild. Ownership sucks I wish we could get Bezos to buy the team. Pay off Stanton and his idiot ownership to get paid out. Stanton is milking this franchise. Pitching doesnt win ballgames you need to fucking hit.

    You are making a contradictory argument that is incompatible with your later statements my friend. At the beginning you indicated the season was over on July 25th yet at around the ten minute mark you bash the front office for not selling the farm at the trade deadline to improve the team. The trade deadline was July 30th. No general manager in their right mind would sell the farm at the trade deadline on July 30th if they believed as you stated the season was over on July 25th! I won't critique your lack of understanding of a farm system but would point you to teams that have won World series and how home grown talent was typically the biggest reason. Bottom line if you trade prospects you are going to be getting players right around 30 with 1 to 2 years of team control left. Very rarely does a Juan Soto become available. Even if Vladimir was available the front office would not have traded for him due to the high cost of his final arbitration year. Lastly I would point out the team did attempt to give the impression it was trying to win at this trade deadline with the players it acquired. However, I do agree with you that the season was already over. The best course of action at the trade deadline given that season was already over would have been to do nothing or sell off assets for prospects.

  • @509Adventures
    @509Adventures Před 5 dny

    Who was ready to bring up? They're all atleast 2 years from being ready! If you "sell them all" your not filling all those positions you say they need... to get anyone good its going to take multiple prospects and you only have so many...so then you will have to trade from your starting rotation and then your back to square one! Also if you get rid of dipoto the entire staff goes and there goes the pitching and development...this is a more nuanced thing than you think it is. Also nobody got vlad or anyone else that was speculated to go so they did what they could. Do i think it was enough? No, but this issue goes back to that offseason when they couldve signed a premiere shortstop and all the other talent that was available and they ended up bargain bin shopping to get lastella and the other ones that failed..stanton was the issue then and still is. Pay for quality get quality. Need a better budget period.

    The M's first and foremost want to compete in their own division. While payroll is not everything, only Oakland has a smaller payroll in the division, and the Astro's is more than $100 million more. Would be nice to have a more competitive payroll. Any new GM we bring in will be just as handcuffed by this ownership, and the lousy hitters park that is T-Mobile, where the team is dead last in the league in average hits per game and has a bunch more hits and runs scored on the road. Every proven MLB talent that Jerry brings in seems to fall off a cliff at T-Mobile and any new GM will also have to try to account for T-Mobile. I mean what proven talent would you feel comfortable enough to empty the farm for and hope that they also don't fall off a cliff at T-Mobile?

    Absolutely not on Jerry. Jerry is not the problem. He has drafted well. He has GRABBED good talent. He tried trading for stars this year but No one better than Randy got moved maybe except Issac, but he benefits from the indoor stadium. So bashing Jerry for that is ignorance. @ShawnnyPerkins yeah like Stanton says, "Hey Jerry, here's 10 bucks to spend for the Mariners". And Jerry says, "Okay, I think I could do it with 5 bucks". Jerry is the link between the Team and ownership so like I said he alone has the power to sway ownership into spending more for a better team.

    I dont know if I agree with this take on dropping Dipoto. The dude has built up an elite farm system two different times. While I would agree that he could trade from that base a bit more, I dont find the issues with the Mariners as a Jerry thing. I think he is held back by poor manager, and even worse ownership. I would blame Jerry more if this issue of pitching is always 100 percent better than the offense. Stanton is the guy that I believe stalled out this season when he didnt give the budget that Dipoto thought he was going to have. We cant control the trade deadline and we got arguably one of the best bats at the deadline. This i believe is a Stanton and Co. issue with a manager who I dont believe inspires much competition or accountability of the players. I see way too many slopy plays to be able to support him.

    • @MarinersFacks
      @MarinersFacks Před 5 dny

      Dipoto continues to waste money on a bunch of bums. Garver, Haniger, Polanco, Wong, Pollock, etc. He pisses away the money he does have to spend. That’s on him. I don’t care about the farm being elite year in and year out when the major league product blows.

I could agree with you if we were talking about how the ballpark may play a factor in this but lets keep in mind that jerry hit on nobodys in haniger and france. They have fallen off but It makes me wonder if it is a management or ballpark issue. Another counter to this point is how is it we can have a talent like Julio who has struggled the whole year yet had 2 amazing years before hand? I lean more to a combo of Travel Time, and a manager who I dont feel can inspire a club when things arent going great. Jerry has done way more good than bad for me to jump against him as I would have done the same deals given the track records of the people he has gone after.

    "Ride the 1 or 2 hot guys"... that's the issue all year. Each player on the roster has had a hot few weeks here and there but not consistently and not enough at the same time. Dylan Moore was great in May. Polanco has been good July/August. Cal has been the most consistent producer, which is kind of sad considering he is hitting .220 but it's been timely hitting and won us some game. Rojas started off super hot. Raley has had a few series here and there where he has mashed it. Even Hannigar had a few promising weeks but they just can't keep it consistent and keep it together. The only one who has really had no streak of any kind at all is Garver. In August, they have just been horrible in general. .201 team average... pathetic.
