Return To The Redwoods Forest Talk: ‘The Farewell Lecture’ with Professor John Isbister
What I Learned in Four Decades at UCSC
“UCSC with its college system was (and is) a university like no other. For some of my colleagues on the faculty, the college was just a pleasant social feature. For me, it was the center of my intellectual life, and it formed me in ways I could never have imagined.”
John Isbister is a renowned economist and professor known for his expertise in economic development and social policy. With a focus on the impact of globalization and social justice, he has contributed significantly to understanding economic inequality and the role of welfare systems. His scholarly work includes exploring the dynamics of capitalism and its societal implications, and he has been influential in shaping discussions around economic reform and social equity.

4:48 Augusta Ada Byron (or King after marriage when she became Countess of Lovelace) was not Babbage's daughter, she was Lord Byron's daughter (that wrote a poem Stanzas for Augusta for her). Babbage and her became estranged when she translated a book about his machine (and added several comments as she understood the machine better than anyone even Babbage in a sense). When Babbage wrote the preface criticizing the government funding for the machine Ada recommended not to do that as it would harm his own cause (as he did several times before), she was only trying to protect him from himself. Her daughter kept all her friends away from her on her last days. When she died not Babbage, nor her husband (that left her on her deathbed after a confession she make for him) went to the funeral. It was a bittersweet life with a very sad ending.

Great interview! Especially the reframing the specs of which we look at climate change through to focus equally on the system oppression that got us to dumping poison in lakes upon communities for which there is no public outrage. I wish there had been more discussion on animal agriculture. Being the perpetrator of 1/3 of emissions, I feel that should be the height of discussion…. The humanist perspective will never help us save nature if we aren’t giving nature a seat at the table of rights. I was disappointed and averse to “try driving those new cars” .. what about those of us who can’t afford that? I propose that we get more plant foods to lower income families, and food deserts… I propose we give political education out for free through library groups and outreach. The solutions need to be collaborative, and I felt that a majority of the last 20 minutes (the Q & A) talked about the victims, but not how the victims could be empowered to change their situation along with scholars such as yourselves. I can see the care for the people y’all have. I can see that you want to make a change. As one said victim of this crisis.. I felt a lot of the conversation only had a tone that gave “Only certain classes/species have a seat at the table, they rest are who we need to save” I will say I loved what Brianna said at the end. “They say life is short but really it’s long. You have lots of time” in regards to getting involved. I do see the irony there with the planet dying.. guess maybe we have medium time? A lot was said and there’s a lot to do. Let’s fight the good fight together fam.

"If you handed the same clam garden technology to an American capitalist it wouldn't matter how good the technology is because they are going to be using it with a different value system which is profit maximization, which is resume building, fame, and reputation and so that value system is like a rudder that shears the ship of a society. Until we address that rudder and transform it back to reverence, responsibility, reciprocity, respect for life, I don't think we're going to change the direction of this ship."

19:57 Callard says classrooms are not venues for 'debates'. 'Debate' has the connotative meaning of 'reasoned discussion', but the denotative meaning of 'verbal competition before a jury'. Typical of modern academic philosophers, she deliberately confuses one meaning for the other. Simple question. If one accepts the connotative meaning, are classrooms venues for debates or not?

Evolution or extinction? Are we able to learn to live in harmony with each other, nature and technology including AI? Sustainability not profitability. Mindfulness and self love, respect not exploitation. Our species faces a major die off, the population is passing the peak, passing a tipping point where our population goes from exponential growth to a transition to a new sustainable relationship with the ecosystem that has sustained us up until now. That downward curve can be as steep as a cliff which falls to zero, extinction, or it can begin steeply and recover as it returns to historic levels of sustainability, pre-technology levels such as pre-Columbian America. This could lead to a selection pressure that would produce a new species of hominid, speciation. The curve could be more gentle and could include technological solutions that would level off at a population that could both live more harmoniously with nature and each other and incorporate technology that would represent an evolution into a new species of technologically enhanced humanity, cyborgs. Taking life to other planets, terraforming and evolving new species of humans who could survive other planetary ecologies is another path that will require technologies including genetic engineering to reach for the stars. Managing these changes in a moral and humane way brings hope to a future that appears very scary from our selfish and ethnocentric perspectives. Keep up the good work or as John Perkins says "Dream True" instead of living like the hero of his book "Confessions of an Economic Hitman." Be blessed, you are a blessing. Aboriginal cultures have much to teach us.

There is no addressing climate change. Industrial civilization is the only way to sustain 8 billion people, and industrial civilization is built on the premise of massive energy inputs. There is no viable energy alternative to fossil fuels; We are locked onto the path we are on. Humans will have no choice but to adapt to catastrophic climate change regardless of the suffering that may entail.

Maintenance is an upkeep that constantly requires eternal sacrifices to maintain a system, do you see? The new cult of life in the form of machines who will act as a function to maintain a system and it's integrity? Humanity as collective only has one job, project itself onto evolution in order to master the environment. It's inevitable little by little we are to give birth to a higher civilization that represents our very essence as a single face.

It's clear to me that the best way forward is to face that we are ending the ability for the human race to live in stable civilizations and help our children understand they will spend their lives watching human civilization die. I say that as someone who helped found Santa Cruz 350 and other local climate action groups. Get with it people, not even political will, if we could find it, can help us now.
