Myxomatosis was not only the first Radiohead song I ever heard but it is also one of my absolute favourite tracks of all time. This track is also not the first time that Radiohead have managed to make a 4/4 metre sound very un-4/4! Let's have a closer look at how the rhythm of Myxomatosis works...

Oasis seem like complete philistines....edit: oh wow I got to the end of the video, he's self-aware?? EWWWWWWWWWW. Oasis is officially the worst band of all time, jeez.

The theme music of the first level of Super Mario always reminds me of how strong the infectious power of rhythm can be. As someone trained in traditional classical music, I feel that my sense of rhythm and groove is somewhat lacking. At least compared to jazz musicians.

The "Shave and a haircut, two bits" rhythm in Rhythm Heaven, in the song for the minigame Sick Beats. It's played as kind of a melodic climax of sorts, leading up to the next section of the track. When I heard it, playing through that minigame for the first time, I immediately recognized it. There are also minigames there that are called Bossa Nova and Polyrhythm, for what that's worth.

I feel the diagrams weirdly synchronized, a little late hitting the first beat or it looks to me like it stays a little longer on it. But this representation is not my favorite, I can't feel flowing freely but I'm more urged to the next beat. Actually I've got difficulties with dynamic visual cue. Even conductor gestures are sometimes of interpretation to me.

By the way, I composed about 4 songs. Some are completely in 7 / 4, and others are partly in 7 / 4 or 7 / 8, where 4 / 4 is the time signature of the main part at the beginning and end. The 7 / 8 parts are often subdivided into (3 + 2 + 2) / 8, with a stronger beat on the 1st, the 4th and the 6th beat (one beat counted as a 8th note). I also used 6 / 4 and 5 / 8 for other songs. I am a fan of odd time signatures.

If it were just two claps, I'd have no trouble hearing them falling on beats 2 and 4 (since those are objectively the correct beats to clap on 99 times out of a hundred). However, as soon as you introduce a "bum badum-bum-bum" rhythm to it, as in "Car Wash", I have a hard time hearing those first and last "bum"s as anything but the 1 and/or 3.

@@DavidBennettPiano maybe not 100%, keeping the rimshot going the whole time but you can get it to sound exactly the same, rimshots, hi hats and all with one drummer and a four piece kit pretty easily. Here's a very obscure (and very subtle) example of a song with a confusing intro: "Black Rose", from the cult GameCube psychological horror game _Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem._ The intro is sparse, consisting of four bells tolls, each two measures apart, and ambient rain and thunder sounds. Once the guitar and synths start coming in, you (might) realize that not only are the bells _not_ sounding on the downbeat, they're a _sixteenth note_ before beat 2 (the "a" in "one-ee-and-a").

I don't mean to crowbar her into this comment section, but this video could not have been more timely, since a song in 7/4 time is currently charting on the Billboard Hot 100 as of this video's release. That song just so happens to be The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived by Taylor Swift. Seriously. I didn't believe it either, but it's clearly in 7/4. 12:13 I'm new to harmonic function but this seems wrong... without playing other chords, how can a major chord imply tension instead of rest? A 1 in Fmaj sounds no different than a 4 in Cmaj without the surrounding context... so then, how can you say this progression BEGINS in subdominant function? Wouldn't it sound no different than a tonic since it's intervalic content is the same? Seems to me, F is our tonic and we are in Lydian. Why can't we call this a I, V, II, II progression? Just trying to understand! I've been really enjoying all your chord progression videos, appreciate all of the real life examples and the production quality! Thanks!

overall i loved the beatles version just to see em all together in some kind of entity again and the actual song has that nice simplistic characteristiic their lyrics carry. i love the idea that they made the now and then longing kind of a song to almost like a hey man be there for me every once in a while. we all knew paul would take liberties, but i sincerely wouldve loved, on the i dont want to lose you part where john falls off, that paul and ringo sing a line similar to how they fill in in the chorus. wouldve made it a more complete song and add some fun complexity changes the beatles are musically famous for. crazy changes in music that still work. all in all its on the playlist and im certainly thrilled.

A substantial chunk of breakcore pioneer Venetian Snares' discography is in 7/4, to the point that it's almost considered his signature as a producer. Kind of surprised none of his work was mentioned, although I guess the drum patterns in his work are complex enough that it's kind of hard to keep track of what the time signature even is a lot of the time.
