I saw a book on String Quartets and started reading it. Very dense and hard to read. I was always, “who is that composer,” or “what instrument is that?” Not baroque but still baroque-ish. Music to play at home, amateur and/or professional. Fun to play or listen to OR quite professional.

It may be that the most frequent performances of her music now are those written in conjunction with Desire Dondeyne for wind band (Marche, Suite/Divertimento) as well as a number of excellent transcriptions of her works for band. She is known to have remarked, "If I had known of this ensemble earlier I would have written for nothing else!"

Fabulous, as always, and thank you for mentioning Rachmaninoff, because the first 6 notes of the second theme of the finale (the "big tune" as it were) are almost identical to the first 6 notes of the second theme of the finale (the "Full Moon and Empty Arms" melody) of Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto!

I've enjoyed all the episodes of Classical Breakdown since I discovered the podcast in the past couple of years. I especially appreciated this episode. During the podcast, Mr. Lawson talked about his experience recording Bruckner's 6th Symphony, but did not mention where where anyone could listen to it. Where is the NSO releasing all the concerts Mr. Lawson records? Is the NSO part of Idagio or other classical streaming services? I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the NSO's Beethoven cycle and hope the NSO releases more recordings.

Thanks very much for listening and commenting. Please forgive the tardiness of my reply. The recordings of the National Symphony Orchestra that I make are featured the first Wednesday of every month at 9pm ET on “NSO Showcase.” The program streams on demand, thereafter, for the rest of the month and you can find that link at WETA Classical’s website. The Bruckner 6 will be airing on May 1st (!) along with the Benjamin Britten Cello Symphony featuring the NSO’s Principal Cellist, David Hardy. I sincerely hope you enjoy both works thoroughly, and that you are only really aware of the quality of the performances and not drawn to anything about the recordings, themselves. Please do let us know how you enjoy the programs, though. Thanks, again.

We know exactly when and why the Berceuse for piano was written. The Choral for trumpet and piano was part of her opera "La Petite Sirène" and was transcribed for Maurice André. The Solfedge lessons were written for her granddaughter, who was a music teacher in French public schools. Cntact me if you want any more information.

The 5 Beethoven late quartets - the Eb, Am, F, C#m, Bb - are arguably the high point of written music. I’ve been listening to these for years, and have never gotten to the bottom of them. I think it was his deafness: he was connected directly to the Source.

I thought the same thing until I heard Bartók’s string quartets, which to my intuition equal them, though I am not a musicokogist. Shostakovich’’s produced the same reaction in turn, but you must know them if you’ve listened to this.

David Hunter's sensational 'doscovery' has more to do with the promotion of David Hunter than with information about Handel. Handel did not invest in the slave trade, he was given shares as part of his payment as director of the Royal Academy, at a time when Royal Africam Company had suspended involvement in the trade. He held these shares for around a month in all. Hunter is a habitually sloppy and irresponsible researcher with a keen eye for headline grabbing.
