Body dysmorphia kills. Anorexia nervosa is the most lethal eating disorder. It's so distressing to look in the mirror and know you are seeing a lie but falling victim to the same lie over and over again. I've struggled with anorexia for decades. My life was out of control, I felt the ONLY thing I could control in my life was my body, and even THAT was not something I could control. It was never skinny vs fat. It was about control and how out of control I felt. It was about a life-ruining perfectionism as I sought validation from people who would never give it. It wasn't about fatphobia. This scene, unedited, encapsulates the struggle of never-being-good enough, of measuring your worth externally. But people with body dysmorphia have to censor ourselves and hide ourselves and our struggles away for other people's comfort.
