Just a normal guy learning how to make stuff out of wood in his garage. When I started this channel, I had a basic set of inexpensive tools, I'd never cut a dovetail, I'd never made a mortise and tenon joint, and I'm not sure I'd ever actually made anything square that was supposed to be. Come along and watch me learn how to do this stuff better. Maybe you'll learn something, too.

WT&S, I've learned as soon as something doesn't go as planned, put the tools down and walk away. 12 years ago working with quarters a an white oak board, me mind wondered just for a moment, to the next thing, and bang, kick back. The 12 inch wide, 1 inch thick, 9 foot long board caught my ribs and left hand. 3 ribs broken, swollen wrist for 2 months and an 8 month break from wood working. Scary as neck when I went back down to me shop. Dented duct work, some busted cabinet doors, I was lucky just the be nicked by the board. Now, I keep my mine right with what I'm doing at hand. If I start to go down stairs to the workshop, I am in a " frame of mind" to do what I want to do. If not, I don't make the trip, even if to just clean up. It's not worth what might come next. Heal up, get in " that frame of mind" go do what you set out to do safley. God Bless!
The Veritas saws will do all you ask of them. No need to “upgrade” unless you just want to.
Nice work. I’m looking forward to making some of these with my grandkids.
Great video. Well explained review.
Just came by, 3 days later, just to give you a thumbs up!
I am looking at upgrading from my 70-100 now, not sure I like Rikon's next step up because you still have belt ranges even with speed dial, I think 3 different ranges, but just starting to look, maybe they are all like that. I do like the Midi size lathes though. I have had this one for about 8 years now and ready start doing more. Thanks for the video.
My Laguna is like that (3 belt locations) but I can get 80% (or more) of my work done in the middle gear because of the speed range there.
@@WoodenThingsAndStuff Good to know, thank you!
The handle bracket on the headstock side is a mystery to me. They want people to lift it by this or is it for holding tools somehow if you have it hanging past the end of a bench. You can fold it down and that is all weird.
@53:02 I drove by and said hello!! lol
Whats the difference between a Midi lathe, and a Mini lathe
Size. Midi is a medium mini. All about the swing and length. Many put it in the model name. 1221 is 12 swing and 21 length for example. Mini lathes are basically pens only.
Nice job on them I'm relitivley new to turning but man you knocked them out would of taken me days to get something no were near as nice. Didn't notice properly are you carbide or traditional gouges?? 🏴👍
As you know, I am looking for a lathe. Thanks for sharing, buddy. Bloopers are always a given, when creating content. Lol
good stuff
Thanks, Eryc!
Thanks for the review. I know it was a while ago. Do you still use this jointer? I am new to woodworking and interested in buying one. I’m slightly concerned with the 1 hp motor and whether it is strong enough. I see another budget model Vevor has a 2hp motor about the same price.
Two things: first, I've never had a problem with the power of the machine. Second, I've purchased one thing from Vevor and let's just say there won't be a second.
@@WoodenThingsAndStuffunderstood. Thanks. King on the way.
Great video Mike. I love the new lathe! I think its great your teaching students about woodworking!
It's been fun so far!
I do have a question... Which has a greater wingspan, and albatross, or a canadian goose? Actually, Penn State sells a variable speed motor, for around $150, that could make that lathe variable speed. Looks like a nice machine. Are you going to put a small layer of wax on it to make the tailstock and banjo slide easier and protect it from rusting? Rikon makes quality stuff.
I use carbide cutters almost all the time now, a lot more forgiving, you have to be quite determined to make a negative rake one to catch
I love my rikon 70-100. Its perfect for pen turning.
Agreed.
Cracking review i have basically the same machine here in the UK i paid £330 for mine($400 ish) looks identical in every way apart from i have yhe variable speed on mine. But the non ejecting tail stock the plastic tray holder all the rest identical apart from i only have 3 belts for different speed ratios.
The tail stock ejection bothers me more than it should. But it's a good value unit nonetheless.
@@WoodenThingsAndStuff yea a agree mine bothers me aswell you'd think can't be that difficult 👍🏴🫣
Love the Bloopers they are great!!!
Haha! Thanks!
You gave a great reason to make GA-nomes... because it makes you laugh, & that gave me a big smile. Thanks!
This is the first video that pops up for you. Hanging things in the places matters, legit.
helpful video. I'm setting up my jig now
Very nice! I think I might try this. Just one constructive criticism, I'd bring down the music a bit in your videos... But great job
Super early in my video making journey. Gonna watch it back now after a few years and probably agree with you....but we'll see
Yup. Agree. Might do a re-edit of this build. Lots of good information here now that I know more about video production it could be beneficial for people to have it produced better.
Trying to turn something with regular wood chisel is the stupidest thing I ever saw.
Yup.One of the stupider things I ever did in terms of woodworking. But I learned a lesson...one of which was to not assume that "youtube woodworkers" were a good resource. Dude with hundreds of thousands of followers uses bench chisels....must be okay, right? No.
Never turn angry. You won't like it when you turn angry. Glad it wasn't too bad. I did see your problem tho. It was incorrectly labeled as Beech, instead of son of beech wood. :D
Never can have enough planes and backsaws so, you're good lol.
I just subscribe to you and can honestly say you my freind are most happy woodworker i have ever experienced and do great work. Thank you for being an inspiration to people ...keep it up.
Thanks very much. I try to keep things fun.
I do wood crafts for shows myself but man those are not crafts those are art...awsome vid.
They're pretty fun little guys to make. Thanks for watching.
@@WoodenThingsAndStuff where do you do shows I would like to come see other stuff ,do you have a line up.
Too much sanding! Unsubscribe!
Agreed. Whoever edited this is terrible.
Those are beautiful! I love the design. They say Howard's butcher block conditioner is more food safe than the Feed n wax.
I've long since moved to a different finish for my boards that is made by a friend of mine in Australia. You can find a link to it in the description of any of my more recent videos, including a discount code!
Well crap don't axe me, I don't know how to handle this. But nice Job Mikey B on filming such a difficult subject, and I don't mean the axe. :D
Great job Mike! I love how this turned out.. also , very impressed with your highly effective abuse of a drill bit !😄
I think "abuse" is a little harsh. Technically, a drill bit is manufactured to remove material as it spins. That's what I had it do. Haha
Great video 🎉🎉
Thanks man!
Brah-vough Mike! Looks lovely, and I believe it crosses something off of your resolution list. I've got a Pulaski with a broken handle that I'll mail you to try next.
I dunno what that is, but it sounds like a job I don't want. Haha
Turned out beautiful. Don’t know how you saved it. Able to drill and cut out the wedge. Not too dramatic but it could have been a real pain.
It wasn't awesome. Haha
Very nice, Mike! It looks great! Now, don't leave it outside anymore
You're not in charge of me, Tim.
nice
Thanks, Eryc!
Great video. Glad you finally buried the hatchet on this one.
Hey-O!
Great video Mike! I love the hatchet! Its ok you made some mistakes along the way but every project is unique!
No point in hiding the mistakes. We're all human, after all. Thanks, Bekim!
Can’t say that I have ever seen anyone until now go through an unboxing like this guy.🙀
Yeah....this one was pretty early on in my journey. I'm still not great at opening boxes, though.
@@WoodenThingsAndStuffI will probably understand the excitement when I get my hands on one.
@@richardc6932 This was the first of my Veritas planes. I've added a few more since then and I feel the same giddiness every time.
love the plane ! that veritas sh jig wasted so much of my time . always going off sq even if u tighten with pliers. u can get an add on part that grips the chisel / blade from the side. I got rid of mine and got the lie nielsen- designed right less knobs and weight cost more but always sq. no regrets
I assume at this point you figured out the stamped steel parts. My instructions did cover them, but it did not jump out at you. We might have different instruction versions,
just came across this site, love your excitement and enthusiasm. I just took a look at my very first segmented bowl, made in 2001. it all flooded back , what a wonderful accomplishment Congrats !!
Thanks very much! I'm still happy with it!
Thanks for the video. Yes you will like the vari-grind attachment. You should use it right in the beginning because you will reduce the grinds without grinding half your tool away. It’s good for fingernail grind, bowl gouge and side or Irish grind. Vari-grind 2 is even better because it increases the ease of use. I’m surely going to enjoy sharpening my turning tools a lot more
I'm probably setting it up next week, because I kind of haven't been happy with my grind since I did the Wolverine setup (though I haven't turned a ton since then). Will do a follow-up video on how things have been going.
Tyler is good buddy guy of mine We shared a dislike of a certain ggbo person and been friends since He’s a good bloke and a mad clint
Not sure what a clint is, but I'm guessing I'll agree. He's an okay fella.
@@WoodenThingsAndStuff if you spell Clint with capitals it looks like something else 🤣
YOU'RE A GOOD MAN.
Thanks, friend. I'm just making my way through the world like everyone else.
I know four years ago,but ouch on the regular chisel on a lathe, glad it wasn’t worse
Yeah....if I could go back and tell past me things, one of them would be something like "there's a reason some people are 'instructors' and some are 'CZcamsrs.'" I thought about not putting this up (and taking it down after it had been up for a while), but I like to have it live out in the world because maybe someone will find value in my idiocy.
@@WoodenThingsAndStuffwe all have done stupid stuff on the lathe some out of inexperience other cause we were lazy etc. You just happen to video it🤷♂️ 👍🏼
Good job, but don't be Jay Batesing everything. :D
