Into the Wild got this part right... Lessons from guiding hikers
At first sight... hiking alone and silent hiking seem to be popular. But many years of guiding hikers and teaching mountain skills courses has shown me that even the biggest introverts rarely want to go out alone. Not because of risk, not because it's lonely, but because most of us prefer to share an experience with others. In essence, we are very social beings.
If you’ve seen or read Into The Wild, you’ll agree that when it comes to skills, Christopher’s story is about what not to do. But when he came close to death, he learned what I learned.
Isn’t it strange how the things you’re most passionate about end up disappointing you the most? Well that’s a bit grim isn’t it. Let’s say… it’s like the age old cliché. You can’t always get what you want, but sometimes, you get what you need.
I thought I wanted to create skilled self confident multiday hikers. Instead of guiding low threshold mainstream treks, I wanted to share what had taken me years to learn. So I went all in.
Summer after summer I took people out into the mountains to teach them how to read the ground, how to navigate without the help of trails or gps, how to maintain themselves, how to judge rivers and cross them safely, how to use ropes to cross difficult terrain, how to plan a day and eventually a sequence of days to make the best of what they wanted to do. To no longer need to rely on guides or mass marketing travel agencies.
Something strange happened.
People came and they were always grateful. They learned what I was teaching and demonstrated that they were capable of applying their new skills. At least, as long as I was there to ask them to. And afterwards… not really. I saw them join more guided trips. Many of them even came back to join me on adventures in multiple countries. We discovered friendships and bonded over sharing the joy we found in our journeys.
While I thought I wanted to create a lot of new solo adventurers. And while a healthy set of basic skills certainly help. It turns out that what most of us are looking for, is to share the experiences we are passionate about. If you’ve seen or read Into The Wild, you’ll agree that when it comes to skills, Christopher’s story is about what not to do. But when he came close to death, he learned what I learned. Often, when it comes to what we’re passionate about, "happiness is only real when shared".

Why would you film yourself "hiking alone"?
zhlédnutí 2,5KPřed 8 měsíci
Why would anyone want to film themselves while hiking? Must be vanity right? Or the millionth wannabe Craig Adams? Well the reasons are often much more diverse or much more simple. I personally like to go out on short timelapse photography missions. A little bit of exploring, a bit of enjoying the mountains or the great outdoors. The photography mission is an extra reason to get me out the door...
Chasing a mountainbike dream

It all started with this photo. Year after year, this exact view kept appearing in my social feed. The culprit? Greg, a mountainbike guide in the French Alps. More specifically the wild areas around Briançon and the Queyras. When I first bought a mountain bike about 10 years ago, I quickly realised cross country marathons wasn't what I was dreaming of when thinking about mountain biking. I mean...

Thank you so muuuuuch! It even worked for my DJI mini 4 pro videos! Great help.
would you say this backpack can be use as carry on for low cost flights?
I have the 40ltr version and I totally agree it's probably pound for pound in price the best value backpack out there on the market it's 50 percent cheaper than the so called bigger brands
Hello, isn't it the kids series? So it's actually okay to be used by adult??
Thank you. Useful video :)
When im editing my rush, I just have like one frame on two that show « mediaoffline » like my camera recorded half of my footage, i need help quick ….
Hi I am going to try this route next week it looks fascinating , thanks
Nice, thanks for the amazing content Can you tell if I can get there with public transportation? I would like to avoid renting a car
I got a 128GB Sandisk Extreme Pro U3 (10) V30 card when the GH4 came out. We were told you'd need a super fast super expensive card to read and write 4K at 400MBS. What a load of rubbish. I still have that same card now shooting 6K 200MBS on the Panasonic S5ii and it still has never let me down. This exact same card is on Amazon right now for £19.95
Bandaids on ears reduce chaff.
Thanks from Dallas Tx!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu a million thanks to you brother. I have been searching this for a very long time. And all I heard was "You can't play H265 in Davinci". Now all this is in the past. CZcams should have recommended your content and not useless garbage out there. Thanks with all of my heart and soul. you have made my life easier. I hope you reach the big milestones that you aspire to and more!!! Also, I have Subscribed
This video was perfectly crafted, you gave the information I was looking for quickly and effectively. Thank you for the awesome content!
Hi Dieter, why would you think that one pole might be enough? Most sources are saying that you should definietly use two poles at the same time. Many thanks
I usually only use one. Yesterday I came into a scary steep situation where I was glad to have one pole and another to hold on to things. No poles would have been less secure and two poles would have been too much on my hands. I think there's a reason that mountain people everywhere from all times are sern with 1 pole. It's the natural thing.

Thanks for the video, i just got them shoes 😊
is this bag okay for trekking , planning to go for 2 weeks and wanted to get a nice affordable bag.
Go far 40 liter version it can work.
While I fully agree with almost the downsides you mention, I actually love my Skinners. They're great for festivals, on the campsite or for walking around the garden or through a forest. I think I've hiked well over 10k in them. Compared to Vibram FiveFingers or Vivobarefoots, the Skinners barefoot feel is absolutely superior and they allow you to move your feet in ways that regular barefoot shoes simply don't allow, especially bending the toes down (is that called plantar flexion?). One thing I don't agree with is the level of protection in practice. Obviously, thorns and sharp things will go right through, but I have found that as I walk more in barefoot shoes (I only use barefoot shoes for everything now), reflexes in my feet that I didn't even know I had have returned and my feet now retract from sharp things so fast that they almost never hurt me. I have no trouble walking thorny areas or sharp stones in my Skinners at all. The sweatiness is also an issue. However, I always wear socks and you only have to take the Skinners off for about a minute for your feet to be dry again. I can easily live with that - the advantages well outweight this disadvantages. I must also mention the higher version is much better at preventing sand, stones and bugs from getting in them. Smaller particles will go through the mesh anyway and you _will_ get dirty feet. They're definitely nice weather shoes though and I only use them in the summer.
ty for so big expiriense - was wondering what to buy in regular town walk and will try my first by Skinners cos its cheap and simpl. I just normal guy that wnat try be more healthy.
I guess I need to learn what is sharp enough
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the two helmets. ATM I’m still using a 2022 Tectal. Had to replace my old one after a crash. So I can say the Tectal was a life saver for me so I got the same one again. The Kortal is on my list if I find it on sale maybe at the end of the season. So for me your review was helpful and it confirmed my thoughts on POC helmets in general. Safe rides man…
Thanks!
Good work
My trouble is that DaVinci Resolve 19 doesn't support the H.264 High L5.2 video file. Could you help me? THANKS!
When you shoot, does the X-t4 make a movie in camera? Also does it save the images as stills in a separate folder?
Hi, great video, will be visiting in September, is it ok to camp / bivi thanks
Thank you so much! You did an amazing job at simplifying everything! 🙏

Hi Dieter. Thanks for the information and pleasant videos. Are these hikes good for dogs?
Hi! I am new to cameras and was wondering what would be a good recommendation for sd card for the canon powershot g7x mark ii ! Thank you!
What level are these hikes ?
All ranges. Every hike has its own video with a detailed description
nice video
Great review and video quality. I own an xt4, but am seriously thinking about getting a used gfx 50r. In that case, the xt4 would have to leave :'(
Great info. Thank you! I’m new to all of this and a true BEGINNER 😂. I jsut learned a lot from this video. The prices were confusing to me. It seems the same cards were $30 at some places and $200 at others.
Hi. I am Belgian living in Nepal for the past 40 years. Thanks gor the advice
still did't work for me
Yeah me too, pls help 😢
Thanks! 👌✨
I like the shape of the Tectal but the pinch point is on my temple. The Kortal is wider and very comfortable
Hi, Vital question I used to transfer videos by phone cable from iphone to PC , the video displayed on PC would be double the size on iphone (which is good and expected), the codec of the vid shows H.264 on PC and the quality is just good and natural. Now when I transfer the very same video, from the same iphone to the very same PC (even to other PCs) via the same cable, the video file size is half, requires HEVC codec to play and when i downloaded hevc and okayed the video, visual quality is just bad ; bitrate is cut in half, fand file size is half than the previous copy that I had trabsferred many months ago. Also, the good quality copy that shows H.264 on PC , now shows HEVC on the iphone I only have this issue with videos now, not with pics. Inever had had it with videos before. Would you happen to know where this might come from and how to remeditae? (Full disclosure: dropbox and icloud don't help as they export the file from phone as compressed; converting codecs doesn't do anything neither; And "keep originals" option doesn't matter at all) Thank you hery much
I would flash the names of the hikes on the screen, run trip mileage, and elevation gain.
That's a good tip
This was very helpfull fo me, thank you! Whatched alll your Chamonix hikes! Choosing between this, but one day and Aiguillette des Houches
JEeeezzzz, Thank you my guy !
bin to la floria a few times nearly twentyfive years ago and happy it still exists . just at the moment i am on the back to health from sciatica, just something to put in my shoes, do not know the english word. i am over eighy but neo doctors , no big satanic pharma products, no fake test or vaccines and now i am back on my feet i shall train and be back in chamonix next spring.
is it safe to use
do i need to format my sd card again after firmware update? thank you for posting this very useful vid!
I have a problem…. When I started to use 128 gb only pictures can be send to my phone but I can’t send videos anymore can please someone explain why?
download link not available anymore :(
I disagree about the long term use of sd cards. I got micro sd cards from 2009 that still work with files on them lol
Thanks a lot for educating.
Thanks and well done Dieter…would maybe get good to indicate the distances and timings
This is what the Komoot routes I am sharing here show :)
