Let's be clear, you don't make a game like this for 500K, or even 1-2 million. This, like so many kickstarters with similar targets, it's more likely a way for a publisher or investor to gauge interest in the game, the more it makes in KS, the more they'll fund it. Beating 500K is the bare minimum, and will lead to a very rocky road ahead, or even the investor pulling out. Not a triumph. I bet they'll fund it at maybe a 1:10 rate, so 1 million will be a 10 million budget, 2 million a 20 million budget etc. These are more reasonable numbers but still pretty low, so the more the better. It's trending towards maybe 1.5 million right now at best, only if there is a big surge at the end.
They've been very clear that the Kickstarter is for the Early Access build which is going to be used to gain further funding (as you mention most likely through a publisher). I'm in no way saying the full game is a sure thing just glad they have met this goal and we'll see an EA build at some point.
