Seattle Today - Episode 11 - Duff McKagan
Donate to Seattle Theatre Group at stgpresents.org/donate
On April 16th Regan Hagar and Stone Gossard, atop their newly rebooted Loosegroove records will offer, for your listening pleasure, the long lost recordings of The Living. A band that played around the NW for about a year in 1982 before it went the way of most bands. It morphed, into something else. Luckily, in that year, the boys would go up to American Music in Fremont WA and lay to tape, what they'd been up to. Had it come out then, that recording would have been the first time the "world" would hear Greg Gilmore on drums, and, at a salty 17 years old, Duff Mckagan, making his debut as an absolute monster of a creative driving force. Seattle Today was lucky enough to have, both Greg, and then Duff come to The Moore Theatre to talk with us about that period in their lives. We were also blessed with a visit from the Mighty Blaine Cook, who would be the singer in the band that both Greg and Duff would follow up The Living with, Ten Minute Warning.
Duff Mckagan is a Seattle musician. From 1979-84 after spending time in numerous bands rehearsing and performing around the northwest (including The Fartz and The Fastbacks) the first band in which he was the creative driving force was The Living. A long lost recording of The Living is being released this month on vinyl courtesy of Loosegroove records. Obviously we were beside ourselves that he agreed to come on Seattle Today and talk with us about this formative and foundational period of his artistic trajectory. While it's no secret Duff and Geoff have been pals forever, and played in (the band) Loaded together, it's also no secret Duff is not necessarily fond of doing press, in general, and (what amounts to prolonged torturous press) podcasts, in particular. If was definitely an honor to have him on, and he even took the time to give Steve a much needed bass lesson.

A national treasure!
Lukin done "No Code" with PJ
Matt is the best drummer on the planet IMHO.
Greg and I toiled at Budget Tapes and Records in Tacoma in 1979 (?) He was head over heels with Jackie, but he had other things on the burner. He moved to Seattle and I lost touch. As I recall he was a driven and soulful person. I'd really like to take him out for lunch and reminisce. Burr
I love the content, guys! This is a treasure trove of stories about the bands we grew up with. Thanks for putting these together.
The wrestling Nick Cave story (twice) was comedy gold 😂
43:18 I, too, hate the Birthday Party and that Dracula mfer
14:21 that’s why you gotta wear sweat pants on stage.
10 Minute Warning and Greg, was the biggest thing, they were always tight, owned the stage they played, and all of us knew, if they wanted more, the street was theirs, I felt lucky to have seen them and the U-Men in that early 1980's time period, and we all wanted a Greg Gilmore playing drums in our bands! Legend!
It was Taco Bell ftr
Excellent episode - Matt is a fantastic drummer, great raconteur and a wonderful human being.
I'll always love him for the fact he looked after Mark Lanegan.
Clean living
Wasn’t he Kristy’s best man at his wedding too…
Matt has been awesome for decades and decades
que lindo tiene parecido a mi cuidad grandes exponentes reales influencias propulsores gracias por intro
Matt and Norm McDonald should of had a show together.
That's funny you mentioned that a lot of people got married to just breathe because my wedding song was PJ's Breath, lol
love grunge seattle bands and love interviews and learning bout the past this stuff awesome
Great interview thanks! Matt is so funny..
Lukin is a frigin gift. Him laughing after every sentence brings needed serotonin to the brain.
Love Matt. I can remember being in woodshop with Matt and Buzz at Montesano building guitars. They ordered the necks and guts and built the bodies. Buzz built a Les Paul body and Matt built an Explorer. Would talk to Matt on the sidelines during football games bout AC/DC and being in the attic with them. Glad to see this interview
Incredible how much detail he’s shared to these stories we only new the surface of if anything. Lives these bands and such a fan of Matt!!
Moore Theater?? Looks like it if I’m going by Pearl Jam’s Even Flow video. Never been there but I know how iconic it was during the classic early 90s era.
Will you guys ever hang with Matt with again? This was so much info and I love it! My mind was blown!
We're sitting 4 football fields apart...you know cuzvof germs
wow, bookmarked this
One of the greatest and definitely the best drummer out of the Seattle Grunge movement.
Geoff is this you??? Captain Kirk here.. NAS days…..
Puberty Love!
The London show was at the Astoria in London Dec 3 1989. Dropped my sister off to see it with her friends, I was just a bit too young I think. Was an amazing gig by all accounts.
He says Fuck but he says gosh. Good heart man
Is that the Paramount or the Moore? They look similar. I saw many shows there from 1990-1993 until the media screwed everything up. I saw fIREHOSE here and Soundgarden, Nirvana, Tad, Gruntruck, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney and so many others. IMIJ was a great band that never got any run. The Sky Cries Mary was a great band that played a lot back then too. I saw Pearl Jam before they were called Pearl Jam at the OK Hotel, they called themselves Mookie Blaylock. Matt Cameron is a cool guy, really down to earth. Much like all the Seattle rock stars. They just remained themselves.
This is awesome. Matt Lukin is a total idol of mine and I've always wanted him to give an extended interview. 12 mins in and I'm already smiling! Thanks for sharing and conducting the interview.
This is great.
I like warm weather and cold beer. What WAS that tiny squealing thing that fell into the air duct?
No offense the Rush talk and Chris talk really hit me hard but man as soon as they brought Jimmy Page in the conversation my heart rate def went up.
Thanks for this. I liked getting to know a little about Matt from the PJ20 doc. He is so cool. I know people like to hate on him and go on and on about Dave Abruzzesse (sp?) should have never gotten kicked out, but I see now how Matt has stayed with Pearl Jam for so long. He just seems like an easy going guy, just drummin’ and chillin’ and not causing to many problems lol. That’s more Pearl Jam’s style.
No one kicks it like this during an interview except for Matt "Motherf*ckin'" Lukin
Lukin rules.
50:22
MATT, IS FUNNIER THAN HELL. I WOULD LOVE TO BE A FLY ON THE WALL WHEN VEDDER IS VISITING HIM. COMEDY GOLD. I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF LISTENING TO THIS EPISODE.
MFC!
Wow!!!! Thank You!! This is worth its weight in gold.
Only 3 comments? This stuff is gold.
Matt Cameron is only one of the baddest boys ever
Love Matt Cameron. What a talent. He loved Chris so much. He was a fan as well as a band mate. ❤️
Thanks for the love and compliment 🌹🌹
Lukin the Sea Captain
…really enjoyed that. Thank you. But you didn’t even ask about his Cavedweller solo record. I love that record. And he doesn’t even play drums on it. He got Mark Guiliana. One of the best drummers on earth.
