My rabbit (born in the Republic of Ireland) found this music quite offensive until I (born in England) explained that the Catholic Church (directly through the pope himself) funded William of Orange’s campaign at the Battle of the Boyne, so it’s not anti-Catholic as much as he might think (it’s more a simple case of violent oppressors forcing their point on a subjugated nation). I left out the bit about it just being Irishmen against Irishmen fighting a landlords war, after all, he is only a small burrowing carrot loving mammal. Sad to say though that rabbits are apparently a fickle and incurious lot and so it was that he forgot the facts of the case almost as quickly as he had heard them. My memory is not as short. After seeing the pallet fires rearing their ugly heads along the Belfast city scape this July and witnessing the tethering of this beautiful country’s flag upon them (presumably ready for burning), I have never felt so angered or ashamed at my motherlands history nor more ashamed at its current behavior and occupation of what should surely be a United Ireland. Not all British folk think that this is okay, nor should they.
