Amstrad SM-104 Turntable Not Spinning + Other Faults - Repair & Overhaul - Retfurb Retro Audio
In this video we take a look at this 1980's (1984?) Amstrad SM104 stereo system, Which has multiple faults with it. The vertical turntable does not spin and the record player arm does not move.
There are also a lot of issues with the control buttons, knobs, sliders etc. Pretty much all of these have distortion issues, when in operation.
We will attempt to repair the issues and perform a general service on the unit. This will also include changing the tape deck belts and turntable belt.
Lets get to it........
-
The system was manufactured around 1984 and has multiple functions.
The speakers are specific for the system and have proprietary connections on them. The unit has phono, Radio and tape functions.
It is a pretty good looking retro style system. However, They were not know for the sound or build quality on Amstrad branded items.

These very cheap amplifiers are basically the same as what you would have got in a budget midi system in the '80s/'90s - a chip amp in a box. Some of them aren't bad. Where these cheapo amps really come into their own though is some of the digital ones (and by that I mean true digital where the amp takes a SPDIF or USB stream and acts as a delta-sigma DAC with loads of gain, so zero generational loss) - chips like the TPA3116 or 3225. You can get these for about £30. I have a couple of these and to my amazement they actually sound *better* in some respects than my John Shearne Phase 2, a British amp that cost me over £700 in the late 1990s. There is some coarseness to the sound and the Shearne is warmer, but the detail you get out of these things considering the outlay is astonishing. I miss companies like Shearne though - I phoned the company up as I wanted a retrofit of the phono stage that was an optional extra and John Shearne himself picked up the phone and had a 20 minute conversation with me about my setup, and recommended a couple of things to improve it - no upselling just genuine advice. We lost so much when everything went to China.

Ah the old mug's eyeful... To be fair though this was from the era where cheap just meant low-spec, not like now where cheaper stuff can be downright substandard. All the main components will have been made by the big Japanese OEMs and will therefore have been thoroughly engineered - the only flaky bits really are down to shaky Amstrad build. But it's a nice old thing and good to see it getting some attention!

Just a quick FYI... 'corrosion' refers to non-ferrous metals like copper, brass or aluminium. Anything affecting steel or iron parts is called 'rust'. Extremely common internet problem. For anyone interested, the metal chassis parts are powder coated, which is much tougher than anything you can get out of a spray can. Always nice to see these little gems being restored. 👍

Nope, I didn’t agree with that premise at all… just because YOU don’t have the engineering skill set to put it back the way it was originally doesn’t mean it can’t be done and relatively I expensively, don’t impose your limitations in others…

@@pilier3 I’m am not saying it is not repairable. The video was more to show what condition it can get in, if not serviced correctly. It is just not an economic repair for that specific fork. For most people it will cost more than it can be purchased for in good condition. Feel free to do the repairs, if YOU can do it. For me, it just wasn’t worth it for that fork. It was better to be used as spares. 👍🏻
