    For me the most glaring issue of this book is the contradiction of Ozma checking in on Dorothy once a week (Saturdays I think?) from book 3, to it now being every day. If she could check on Dorothy every day, why did they even go on the journey underground at all!? Only when they got stuck did Dorothy reveal that information, so did she just want the thrill of adventure at the expense of their lives? Very weird. Especially if they had just stuck to it being every Saturday, it would have made more sense because they were underground around a week, and it would make sense for them to travel because the Mangaboos wanted them gone, Ozma wouldnt be able to see Dorothy in the Valley of Voe because she was invisible, it was likely too dark in the mountain, the gargoyles were out to get them, as were the dragons. If the story were reframed that the cave they get trapped in at the end is the first place they can exist in peace where Ozma can check in on Dorothy, the plot would have actually been worth something. But no. And for the back third where they are futzing about in Oz, I enjoyed the character interactions, but as you pointed out, it is meritless. The time could have been better spent if maybe one of the underground enemies they made makes it to Oz, or perhaps there's a crossover with the Nomes. But I digress: there is no point trying to fix this shell of a story.

    Hmm, disappointing review, especially since you gave away a major spoiler and without warning. This is the first review I've seen of yours so maybe you do that regularly, but I find that to be distasteful and quite rude. So I'm super glad I've already seen this movie. I was trying to find again the review by the guy who first pointed me in it's direction as he claimed it as an underrated, little known gem. From all of the various crime movies I've seen over the years I have to agree. However it's been like a couple of years since I've seen it, so it's hard for me to give much props more specifically. I am remembering though he gave a very favorable mention to it's music score. I just heard again the opening theme and it completely sets the tone of the film perfectly. I think the score helped a lot to further set in place it's iconicness and how memorable it is. I was hoping that other review could help me remember what all else it was that I liked about it as I felt I agreed with most of what he said. I'm wondering now if his video (or channel maybe) were deleted. There's barely anything posted review wise now on YT on behalf of this movie. I feel like it deserves more than a roughly 2 minute glossed over review. I have to disagree that it was ''far too long'', felt like the right amount to tell it's story. I don't remember there being any real fat on its run time. Yes, many of the things in this film have since been done to death, yet at this point they certainly hadn't. I felt like it's rendition of these now fairly standard tropes carries much more weight than so many others I've seen since. I'm not gonna say it's the best crime/thriller of all time, but I was quite haunting and tragic in a way than most of these films don't stick with me. Even some of the smaller characters have some weight over the story (spoiler warning, though it's sort of vague) and including one insistence of a critical plot that could've been adverted by one character showing some compassion to another human being. It goes to show you never know who might hold your fate in their hands. Some might hold it unknowingly, yet have strong cause and effect over it. It was quite a poignant example of karma coming to bear. A number of these characters really stirred the sh*t pot of their world, so it's no wonder that things didn't work out well for all involved. I don't think anybody was trying to impress us how cool and amazing the life of criminals is. I'm not a saint, yet I think this is too often glossed over. I'll tolerate it with some movies (if their otherwise worthwhile enough pros and cons wise) that is til they reach a threshold then I have to turn it off if they push that agenda too hard. I don't hold scumbags up as heros. I feel this is a crime film that respects that. We don't have to necessarily like the characters here, but they are at least relatable and not too much shallowness. I do remember thinking that at least the two male lead protagonists gave good performances and the cast in general was at least pretty decent. I liked the production overall, it felt much more lived in and believable, especially compared to so many generic cookie cutter crime/thrillers that have come out in the last 20 or more years. I try to miss many crime films intentionally as I feel they'll make you sick to your soul. This film carried the weight and burden of these characters misdeeds. Yeah it's still not something I wanna watch all the time, yet still feels a lot more rewatch able than the emotionally stunted and numb, slick garbage that's churned out all too often in more recent eras.

    Another difference is in the movie, Robbie (Sandler) plays "Somebody Kill Me" for Julia (Barrymore) in the wedding audition scene (one of the absolute highlights in the movie), however, Robbie writes it in his bedroom in the musical, but he wasn't listening to The Cure. Also in the musical, Julia doesn't get drunk and sick at the club, versus in the movie ("I vomited in my hair. Does my hair smell bad?").

    I thought it was a good movie and a good criticism of Hollywood (and everywhere really) , I guess I just relate to his sense of humor. And I even liked the on the nose metaphor at the end with the fool's gold. I saw all the bad reviews but had to give it chance since he's hilarious in IASIP. I do feel like some of that humor carries over, just in a much more positive way.

    I totally agree with you. This is almost a perfect movie. Just finished watching it. And the ending made me question alot on that decision. Would've loved if we skipped a few years later and shes running the shop. And is speaking perfect japanese. Cause that's another plot point. The scene where Abby says "my father always told me i couldn't finish what i start". And besides learning how to cook. She was learning Japanese with the book. So a better triumph would be her being able to overcome that language barrier. Still love the movie. It's quirky, funny and heart wrenching in many points. Brittany Murphy was taken from us way too soon. She would've been a powerhouse in cinema. Because, she proved she can not only carry a movie. But be the "Spirit" of whatever vehicle she leads. RIP

You did something unusual--you told us your physical reactions to the film; you verified it by pointing out that you had the same reactions every time you watched it. 70 year old white liberal snowflake here I am obsessed with this movie! I believe yours is the first review I have watched that addressed the broader storylines. Yes it is a beautiful love story, which I was totally down for, but it was also a world where women and people of color had positions of power . You are so right.that part of change is putting the world as we want it to be out into the universe and this film does that beautifully! The coming out scene not only showed how to act when someone you love comes out to you, but it was also a PSA about safe sex. Alex's speech should be on Billboard's and printed on flyers posted on telephone poles. Bulletin boards, and left under windshield wipers etc. And yes GOD damn it VOTING MATTERS!! thank you for your review.

      I'm elated to see not just individuals in my generation seeing the "We not Me" reality we all strive for, but to see all individuals from every generation! Truly a remarkable film to start conversations, to be a visual aid to those who've never seen themselves on the screen before, and agreed ... Without voting, there'd be no progress.

    Boy, I literally could not agree more with both your review and all the comments I've read posted here so far. I grew up two decades before Stonewall, when police not only raided public gatherings of queer people, but also private house parties, simply for the crime of "being." When mainstream media would not touch any reference to one's alternate lifestyle in relation to something good, but quick to trot out the secret to account for any bad acts (reinforcing the idea that the two were always intertwined) We thought we were making giant progress when in 1975,Time magazine published a photo of a known gay soldier, Leonard Matlovich, with the label "I am a homosexual," a first of an openly queer person. Yet for years afterwards, the New York Times would never use the word "gay" in place of the medically-sounding "homosexual." In the '70's, after coming out, I was quite involved in the queer political movement in New York State. At the time, the legislators understood there was a thriving gay community in the Greenwich Village area of lower Manhattan, but convinced there were NO LGBT+ people in any upstate areas. (On "lobby day," we impressed ourselves when we could get, say, two constituents from Rochester, and three from Buffalo, to come to Albany to meet with their representatives.) Gay characters in movies at the time could generally only hint at a character's alternate lifestyle, for a bit of comedy, like the so offensive stereotype of a black man who was always shown rolling his eyes to express his fear of non-existent ghosts. Like the introduction of the token character of any marginalized community at first, said representative did not interact with any other because there was no other in that film. I remember when showing a gay couple expressing any romantic feeling for each other was considered too sexual for a general audience. A big landmark was the two-season sitcom, Love, Sidney, in 1981. An older gay man took in an unmarried woman and her child to help her. This was the first to have a queer lead, and the network insisted this so-important aspect of his character was downplayed to near zero. And the great steps forward with Will & Grace tv series and the movies La Cage aux Folles and The Birdcage. I recommend the low-budget film, Latter Day Saints, free on CZcams as another step forward. But happy endings were rare for queer folks for a long time. I recognize how important it was for Brokeback Mountain to have a tragic ending, as the movie was apparently aimed to tug at the heartstrings of a straight audience. Yes, RW&RB is purposely cheesy at times, but that is its strength. (I still am touched by straight romance scenes in the classic Disney cartoons from the start of their full-length movies.) I literally watch and rewatch this movie or some component like reviews, interviews, blooper reels every day. I marvel at the craftsmanship that seems to have been carefully crafted for each line. I love the half-conversation lines not needing replies that tell us what we need to know, like Henry expecting Alex to ask him about all the famous guys he's shagged, Alex in the closet saying he needs to apology but gets interrupted by Amy opening the door, Alex telling Henry "you'll never guess who Shaan is dating" when they get summoned to the king (because we the audience know the answer). Saw an interview about the composing of the incidental music and from then on, appreciated how much that adds to the emotion of each scene, the music that shows Alex's nervousness in the Red Room awaiting Henry, the swelling for the New Year's eve kiss and the Red Room passionate making out, the two different theme music, one for Alex, one for Henry. (If you watch one of the many clips, you can see how less impact certain scenes have with any other music.)

    • @lightboltjoe
      @lightboltjoe Před 7 měsíci

      First and foremost, thank you for your story! ... I also greatly appreciate your analysis within pop culture / tv / film over the decades within queer representation. I see each progressive moment on a screen as a stepping stone towards the next and the next. You'll notice in Rated G or PG films / shows now-a-days that you have numerous kids with nonchalant same sex parents; something we couldn't even dream of ten years ago ... This is reality. All people exist. All families exist. And now that kids can see their own family units represented on a screen with such love and acceptance and normalcy, I can not WAIT to see what representation media will give us ten years from now... I think that's what's happening as Gen Z is now in the work force. Not so much them making pushes for over saturated representation, but more so an understanding of how as long as everyone is safe, happy and healthy, then what difference does it make as to how a family on a screen looks? The kids are alright.
