    This was one of the best riff vids I’ve ever seen I’m gonna try follow it I don’t know if it’s your skill or the tuning of the harp but it was so raspy and I love it Couldn’t make out what it was but it kind of looks like a noble because of the back of the harp but I cannot conceive that a alloy comb could contribute to such raspiness

    At 1:55 "...there's something about the Marine Band that's a little bit crap..." That cracked me up, yes! I hate sharp edges on harmonicas! Mostly play Hohner Rockets for Richter tuning and Seydel Orchestra S for solo tuning. But for my other odds and ends harps, I round the corners off. It'd been a while since I'd gotten any new harps, but I got a few cheap ones in the mail yesterday for my "spares/stays-at-school" box. I wasn't expecting the best tone and response, but got really grumpy at the corners. How hard is it for manufacturers to round off the corners of their plastic molds? Ah, well! Thanks for the video. I'm looking forward to trying a DaBell. I'd love to see a follow-up video of you revisiting these two after you've set up the DaBell properly as you have your Hohner.

    • @TheHarmonicaBarge
      @TheHarmonicaBarge Před 9 dny

      ha yes I know what you mean! I started sanding the corners a bit which certainly helps. Nice idea to do a follow up video, the only problem is the dabell uses phosphor bronze reeds and I just think I prefer to work on brass. I've not really worked on PB reeds much.

    I played the harp 40 years ago. I have retired and my wife plays bluegrass/folk now. I will eventually get all 12 keys, but I just ordered a low D because my old D was toast. I do like being in the background so I am not interested in"standing out". I play in a jam that does a lot of "Dead" in Am. What key harp for 2nd position do I need? Thanks, Bob

    • @TheHarmonicaBarge
      @TheHarmonicaBarge Před 19 dny

      Hi Bob, Good to hear your harmonica story. Obvious choice would be a G Harp played in 3rd Position. I would also try an F Harp or Low F played in 5th position depending on what the song is. good luck :)

    I cannot believe it but this channel just went totally insane! What an insane topic from you brother! I was trying to learn the rhythm on the low notes from you and suddenly, in the middle of nowhere yku you bring up yhe esoteric technique,on which I usually bust my high blow reeds or something! Now I'm convinced knowing all the bends is the key to mastery eh?

    • @johnotrompke3564
      @johnotrompke3564 Před měsícem

      Yep, I just double checked: jammed 789 draw on my Fender blues deluxe A. Jon Gondick once helped me fix one when I was trying to play the high B (ten blow bent). I think it's Jon who was kind of like "don't "

    • @TheHarmonicaBarge

    I have to work on this a lot more because I so often "over shoot" so the it unbends. I have asked David Barrett about this and was hoping for some definite answer because of his general insistence on tongue block as the embouchure. Blow bending was his exception though and the only thing he said was, if I feel better using pucker up there, then stay with that. He said he puckers blow bends a lot. 😱

    • @TheHarmonicaBarge
      @TheHarmonicaBarge Před měsícem

      ah thanks so much that's really interesting! I think maybe a lot of the Blues players do the same but it's us Old-Timey/Rag-timey folks that get into these weird techniques :)

    • @TheHarmonicaBarge
      @TheHarmonicaBarge Před měsícem

      @@mooncricket8551 yes absolutely! The 4 6 draw split will give a nice Cajun flavour. I find this works better on some songs than others and it also helps if that interval is nicely in tune on the harp :)
