Who Travis Martell is:
After Junior hockey, Travis was fortunate enough to play at the NCAA level where he earned a degree in Exercise Science. Training became not only a passion but a fundamental way of life.
Over the last 10+ years, Travis has worked with young athletes one-on-one, in camps (Edge of Excellence, SD23 Hockey Canada Skills Academy, and Sicamous Hockey School) and even remotely, to help them achieve their personal fitness and hockey goals. In 2008 he became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength Conditioning Association (NSCA).
Today, Travis' goal is to combine his professional playing experience with his educational knowledge to help young hockey players reach their full potential.

SL Airplane - Tutorial
I wanted to quickly go over an exercise that we do if we ever notice players having a hard time squatting and keeping those knees in line. Sometimes they'll have one side where that knee just wants to cave in a little bit and typically that will be because that glute isn't firing as well or that glute is not strong through those motions so that knee will want to collapse and we call that a valgus collapse or other times a little bit more dynamically we'll notice guys are bounding across and they land and they have even more of a collapse. The exercise we like to do with these guys is called a single-leg airplane.

You're absolutely correct. What we teach our athletes is to think about squishing the floor with the foot they're standing on. This helps create a little bit more stability.

@@MartellEliteFitness well coach, the biggest challenge for me as a 64 year old player who has had several hip/ groin injuries is conditioning. I am a good skater but seem to taken a step behind my peers and even some guys who are older. I used to be a good runner but that has become a big challenge. Any suggestions?
Running is tough on the hips and groin so it's good you don't do that anymore. Haha Stretching consistency is huge and then banded work for the hips to provide them with the stability strength they need. Once you have that, then you could start to incorporate some low level plyometrics.

@@odysseusthesojourner4401 Short sprints, 5-10 yards would be the best way to improve your "foot speed" on the ice. And to get better at the sprints, work on single-leg strength and single-leg power.
