Why computing now feels like ‘disposable technology’ | Ep. 156
As computing has developed over the past four decades, we increasingly see products designed to be more ‘disposable’ rather than upgradeable or made to last longer. However, there are still bright spots within the ecosystem that allow consumers to get more out of their devices or extend their life. Keith chats with Larry O’Connor, founder and CEO of Other World Computing, about these issues, as well as how improving speeds through cables and connectors enabled more external products such as storage (and why Keith needs to backup his data more often).

    I don’t know why everybody is so upset about soldered in ram or SSD… You haven’t had that ability to upgrade your iPhone or iPad or even iPod since the beginning… It’s just now their laptops are catching up with the modern approach to hardware… And you can always resell your unit and buy an upgrade. It’s not that big a deal… Unless of course you’re in the repair business!

      "Catching up" implies its some feature that benefits the user. Soldered memory has absolutely no benefit to the user. Its penny pinching at best and planned obsolescence at worst.

    They are paying moatly because people lose access, not someone may have seen it. Also not the best to pay the ransom either, since the bad guys could still possibly lock you out again after paying the ransom.

  • @dustinc1685
    @dustinc1685 Před 4 dny

    Kinda but not really a dumb question. The reason you pay ransom is because the data is still important to you. And if you know exactly what they stole, you know exactly what to change or how to catch ‘em.

    Unsurprisingly, it's easier for the terrorists to lock you out of your own system than it is to gain access to your system. They might not have access to your system. But, in different vein: If you completely rewrite your your system to back before your access was lost, the previous vulnerability is still present and you may not be able to determine when the system was compromised.

    • @NixonAngelo
      @NixonAngelo Před 5 dny

    • @Longbowgun

    Ransomware is a business and it’s in hackers best interest to give the data back / give back control so the next time they deploy a successful attack the next company will pay up. If they don’t give back control, sell the data, or try to extort the company a second time then yeah companies would probably stop paying.

In the middle of me shouting slurs at my “robot,” it stopped suddenly and read me a morality tale about the tree of knowledge and the pitfalls of looking behind the curtain. The story was about a minute and a half long and sounded so familiar? I asked Siri for the name of the story that she just read…” don’t have an answer for that?” WTF? Please tell me that someone else has heard this and knows the name of the story? It was perfectly timed. I immediately shut up and listened to the whole thing. It is far worse than they hint at. What do you think the balloons were doing? They have been probing our defenses. The tv series Jericho was a a light version of reality. I went through hurricanes Andrew. Lost everything. It will take at least 18 months after the event to just get one large substation transformer like the large rail road car size, takes as we speak a 24 -60 month lead time now. Not including having the right people to install it. Now just consider the minimum requirement for each town city all needing this rebuilding at the same time. Here is another stat for ya there are only 5000 nuclear trained personnel to run operate our current nuclear reactors. I teach in my classes to have at least. 18 to 36 months of food and water and enough means to defend and protect you and your family. If you take the approach as though you are living in 1890’s you can handle pretty much what is coming.

I had this unpleasant experience after being recommended by a manager. I had worked with on a contract and was told if he recommended me they would hire me when I arrived. I was working another assignment and agreed to come in extra early in order to make the assignment, I was already working. It was seven men, It was seven men and one woman, and of course it was the woman who gave me hell after all the guys said hire me. Needless to say, there’s a waste of my time and disappointment because I believe she didn’t want another woman there she was protecting her territory Interviewing as a gambit go in knowing it could go either way just do your best. As someone who knows more than those in the media, I can tell you that Elon and his team are aware that they will be firing people from the Supercharging team, since last year. I live only 15 minutes away from the Texas Gigafactory and know many people there who have shared a lot of information that I can't disclose here. NACS has already won the fight to be the STANDARD CHARGING for EVs in North America, and there are already MANY companies that have told them they will TAKE OVER the proliferation of SUPERCHARGERS all over NA. Tesla is the ONLY ONE who will provide the HARDWARE to them, so TESLA will focus more on other big projects they have in the pipeline. Even a post to move 10 feet away requires city approval, which takes months to obtain permits, etc. Now, the oil companies and even new EV charging groups will be the ones who will handle ALL those tasks. Now, do you all understand?!? "EVERYTHING" y'all saying here is just HEARSAY & DUMB opinions, period.

This was during the time when big tech was laying off a lot, and I think teams think they are going to get someone special, but they forget there are other companies competing for those cast offs. I don't know how prevalent this sort of thing is, but teams trying to produce also being charged with hiring is a drag on productivity, so its possibile.

    Tech employees are disposable..just like high tech toys..it is not a field designed as a career path...this practice of minimizing the number of employees has been going on since the 1970's. As a California native who grew up in the SF bay area when all the startups were exploding, the practice then was that of firing anyone over the age of 35 and replacing them with a 22 yr old who could be paid for the same work at a vastly reduced rate. Why pay the old guy 125K (back then) when this kid out of San Jose State will gladly work for 50K (back then)?..by its very nature high tech truly is the churn and burn of jobs..only a miniscule number of tech workers will make it big, yet the educational hype keeps sounding the siren call of fast and easy money..good luck....
