If you ever played OF, that was pretty close to what it looks like coming at you when you turn your back on the ball and run to the spot. Much harder than it looks.
The big square screen you see over the fence was the batter's eye screen. In 1962, Lou Brock, then playing for the Cubs, hit a home run over that screen. He was the first to do it as a left handed hitter. Joe Adcock of the Braves had done it before as a right handed hitter, over the left field screen. The very day after Brock's HR, Hank Aaron hit one, like Adcock, into the left field stands, but not over the screen, just over the fence. Those are the only three players to hit HR's into the Polo Ground center field bleachers in a Major League game.
Batter was Vic Wertz - and he was a left handed hitter , your video has a right handed hitter . ?????? com on This was the greatest catch in the history of the game
I’m not 100% positive, but that had to be the LONGEST OUT in MLB history. Vic Wertz could not have been happy….
The real catch wasn't good enough? Is there really a need for this computer generated nonsense? Maybe get outside and actually play some baseball?
It’s a great catch… but Jim Edmonds’ catch is way more impressive
The catch is the important thing; but, one correction. The batter was Vic Wertz who batted left handed. Video show a right handed batter.
Modern day under appreciated outfielder Lorenzo Cane was amazing. Recently retired I saw him steal many extra base hits. A amazing athlete.
My father was in the centerfield seats, row 8, right above Willie.
That’s a home run at so many ballparks.
R.I.P Willie you will be missed
i love that the arena and the surrounding are all based on Willie Mays era love the 50s or 60s look it has being a player from that time He was a good runner for the ball
Willie should pound the glove when he knows he's got it.
Willie mays was more worried about getting the ball back into the infield than making the catch😂
Go Hawks 🐤
Stan Murphy was not the batter😮
Nope. Vic Wertz.
There is no fucking way I saw a random post in the MLB group today asking how to do this, and then this video is the first on my recommended list when I open youtube. The algorithm is algorithming
Not the fans wearing modern clothes lol
That was beautiful 🥹
What a tribute. That is a historic play 👍
😂
The hat should’ve come off
The Giants didn't have piping on the jersey in 1954. The piping was removed after the 1948 season.
Except that it was Vic Wertz who hit the ball. And he was a left-handed batter. Other than that, absolutely nothing wrong with this video… 😂
Vic Wertz was left handed not right handed hitter
Oh wow, does he ever remind me of me in my days. In my own mind, I was a legend!
I wish they still had a strangely configured field like the Polo Grounds today.
@coltonsvlogsandadventrues Yup, 600 feet to center and about 300 down the lines. Built 1907 I think.
They built them unconventionally out of necessity back then. But doing that intentionally nowadays seems kinda lame. Like Tal's Hill and the pole in Houston made the Astros look like such goobers that they just got rid of it. A minor league team should do it though. Anyways, just my $.02
@@jimgray3346 Yes, it would draw fans to the park.
Who had the scout on that hitter? Playing WAY to far in. Catch was way harder than it needed to be.
RiP
Quick time is trash
Respect 🫡 ✊ ❤
How in the goddamn hell did Willie run that ball down with no sunglasses on?
That’s what I’m saying I couldn’t say a thing
Cuz he’s just that good
They didn't have sunglasses for ballplayers at the time, I suppose…
He was the GOAT
the goat is up chilling in heaven thinking about that play🙏🏼
I'm pretty sure they got the sun angle right. The PG was alligned dead east to west; so at 4pm the sun would have been right behind home plate.
The Cleveland hitter, Vic Wertz, was lefty. How bogus!
It is still pretty good. They even got the sun angle right.
They probably couldn’t get the licensing rights to him.
I’ve always wondered why it’s called “ the catch “ when the throw was the best part of the play
Actually, it was the distance he had to run just to catch it.
Vic Wertz was the batter, not Stan Murphy.
couldn't get the licensing perhaps
@@Niceguycommenting How about Vic Tayback?
Very cool!!! This is confusing with the Catch from Montana to Clark!!! But Willie Mays did this kind of thing every game… Andrew Jones even said he was the best defensive player ever to play the outfield!!
This is not confusing at all, this was the original catch, the one that the 49ers got the name from
The sign in the Polo Grounds was for Chesterfield - it was a large cigarette with A lways B uy C hesterfield signed under it and 'A HIT!' in smoke above. Just sayin'.
He couldn’t control it that was it only in the game bcuz they wouldn’t promote smoking products
@@Gay_Man123 Who's Stan Muphy?
@@howardcosell2022 what the hell are you talking about
@@howardcosell2022a stand-in player for Vic Wertz. MLB doesn’t have the rights to every old time player

He is raking this year. He'll be at target field some point soon.
Forgot to mention...he is playing for Cedar Rapids Kernels (High A-Twins).
Good to see fellow patriots out and about. I was able to see the convoy just before Williamsburg.
Alex Jones is the GOAT. 🐐
Everything he has been saying has been coming true in the past 2 years it's kind of creepy.
Yeah I've been a listener for 15 years and its all come true. Also his movie: endgame: blueprint for global enslavement is basically Revelations and I think that movie came out in 05
