Spotlight Webinar: Critical Appraisal of Public Health Research Evidence
Critical appraisal is an invaluable step in the evidence-informed decision making process. However, it can be challenging to select appropriate critical appraisal tools and apply their use in practice. The NCCMT is excited to host Dr. Marilyn Macdonald and Dr. Lori Weeks from the JBI Centre of Excellence (www.dal.ca/faculty/health/nursing/research/JBI.html) to present a webinar on the critical appraisal of public health research evidence. This session will provide an overview of the importance of critical appraisal as well as an introduction to some of JBI’s critical appraisal tools (jbi.global/critical-appraisal-tools).

    Hello, in item 2 when it says "justification of any deviation from protocol", if they don't say anything about deviations from protocol in the review, what i should do? I should check the box or not? And I have the same question also for item 4, when it says "Justified publication restrictions", if the review says that there are no language restrictions, or no restrictions at all, or just doesn't adresses the problem (it doesn't says anything about restrictions), what should I do? Check the box or not? Thank you and thank you for this video!

      @nccmt Před měsícem

      Hello, thank you for your question. If these issues are not directly addressed by the authors, you can use your judgement to decide whether you feel the authors have adhered to the protocol. Similarly, you can judge whether or not the authors were inclusive of languages. Oftentimes, if authors were inclusive beyond English, this will be explicitly stated.

      @@nccmt Thank you a lot for your answer you are my saviour! But there is still a thing that I don't understand (Item 2), because, if they say "we did deviated from the protocol and that's because blah blah blah..." ok, that's obvious, I'll check the box, while if they say "we did deviated from the protocol." (without any justification) I won't check the box. But if instead they state "we totally adhered to the protocol", or, I feel that the authors have adhered to the protocol (so in the review they don't state "we totally adhered to the protocol" but I think they actually adhered to it), in this two cases, I'll check the box? Thank you again!

    • @nccmt
      @nccmt Před měsícem

      @@lucac682 Yes, in those two cases, you can check the box! Essentially, if there are no deviations from the protocol then there's no need to justify.

    good explanation of ARR compared to RRR .....I bet the government uses one set when they want to prove they have done something effectively and the other set when they want to minimise what they have done something not so welll....like this the risk of getting infected by the coronavirus is reduced by 40% if you wear a mask....when in reality they used the RRR instead of the ARR...I bet for deaths they used ARR instead of RRR to show how good a job they were doing...ha ha...guess Twain wasn't wrong then....

    Hi greetings, I have some questions about this too. I am currently conducting a systematic review and plan to use this tool. Most of my studies are cross sectional and few case-control. Because of my research question I cannot use RCTs. The question I have is regards to withdrawals and dropouts, blinding and confounders. These questions don’t have an answer because of the type of study. The studies identify confounders and adjustments but doesn’t say the percentage, also the studies don’t mention blinding or withdrawals are they are cross-sectional. Does this make my studies weak? Because they are really good articles. This tool is the best I have seen CASP doesn’t have checklist for cross sectional studies

    Bonjour, je n'ai pas compris comment calculer le DMS: pour le cas du calcul de l'efficacité de l'intervention sur des ados pour évaluer leur état mental, s'il est la soustraction d'un score sur 10 à un autre, le DMS peut être supérieur à 1? Pourquoi indiquer qu'il est entre 0 et 1 ? Merci d'avance, Cyriaque

    • @nccmt
      @nccmt Před rokem

      Merci pour votre commentaire. Pour calculer le DMS, la différence moyenne est divisée par l'écart type. Il est possible que le DMS soit supérieur à 1, ce qui indiquerait un effet très important.
