Nothing stopping private rail companies operating services here in NZ like they do in Japan etc. Laurie. 😅😊🎉

    NZ's EE EMU's - SOUTHERN RAILWAY UK 4SUB EMU SIMILARITIES !! Amusing. These English Electric EMU's, when I visited Wellington in 1986 were still in operation on the Johnston branch. What I discovered however (being a British Railways Mechanical Engineer) was that the EE control & Westinghouse straight air brake equipment on these 1,500v DC overhead units, was identical to the Southern Railway's 4SUB (4-car SUBurban) 750v DC Third Rail standard Gauge EMU's introduced in 1941 by the famous Southern CME Oliver Vaughan Snell Bulleid (originally from New Zealand). Indeed driving one of your units revealed that the handling & braking even felt & sounded similar to the British version. One of which is preserved (unit 4732). Although Bulleid was probably more famous for his Air Smoothed Pacifics, 30 x Merchant Navy Class & 110 x West Country Class) he built during & after WW2. Twenty of which are preserved !!!

    Hi, i'm from the UK and just wondering why you get a red light above the green?

    • @loiswallace3334
      @loiswallace3334 Před 9 dny

      It is my understanding that the top light indicates the track/block status for the straight ahead or main track, and the bottom light indicates the track/block status of the side track. So in the case of the red light over the green light, the top red light indicates that the track/block ahead along the straight or main track is not to be entered as there may be another train ahead. The bottom green light indicates that the side track is clear and can be entered by the train without restriction. However, usually the switch/points on the tracks ahead of the train are aligned/positioned so that the train can only go along the track as specified by the position of the switch/points. In this case here, the train can only go into the side track, and it is physically impossible for the train to proceed ahead along the straight ahead or main track anyway.

    I understand that there is (or was?) another tunnel between the "Neptune" and "Brighton" tunnels, which was decommissioned in 1900 due to safety concerns. For a while the northern portal was visible back in the 1980s, but it's pretty much inaccessible these days.

      Looking at the road, it looks to be prior to the Kapiti expressway. But obviously it was after Feb 2011, since the electrification before that terminated at Paraparaumu. I'm guessing this was about 2012/2013. Also from the sound of the train I think it's a Ganz-Mavag. Which are no longer in service.

    • @richardvoogd705
      @richardvoogd705 Před 8 měsíci

      @@DevilofdoomI think there's a surviving Ganz unit at Ferrymead, possibly the "super Ganz" upgraded one. Ferrymead also has examples of Eo (from Otira) and Ec (Christchurch) locomotives. They also have an English Electric set that was in use in Wellington before the introduction of the Ganz units in the 1980s and the Matangi early in the 2010s. I recall travelling through the Lyttelton tunnel on a train hauled by an Ec, back when I was little.
