My father told me in 1984 that the Gulf of Tonkin was bullshit. He wasn't 19 in Vietnam, but he was definitely very young. He was smart so they sent him to OCS before he deployed to that nightmare. The burden of command weighed on him until the day he died in 2011. He admitted to me on his deathbed that he tried to raise me to be unfit for military service. I owe him a lot for that.

Legend has it that this track got made because Richie Rich, who was a hip-hop/scratch DJ told his mates that house music was easier to create and they basically said "Prove It!". Four days later, he'd made this absolute masterpiece. It brings back many memories for me, but mostly I'm reminded of my holiday in Ibiza in '89, absolutely freaking out on the dancefloor to this (especially the horn stab).

I was in Madrid, Spain in 1989. I remember this song being played in all of the clubs in the city. Those were good times for a young 23 and 24 year old military man. Southern Mediterranean Europe had the best clubs.

Obviously it was originally called "Let's Get Brutal" when released in the US, but when it was remixed for the UK it was during a phase when every house record had to have the word "House" in the title if the record label thought it had a chance of getting in the pop charts. There were loads of examples: House Nation, House Arrest, and Doctorin' The House are just 3 of the pop crossovers from '87-'88 that I can think of immediately. "Let's Get Brutal/This Brutal House" turned out to be the most timeless example.

Takes me back to 1981 when I first heard this groove on the radio.
