Just read the full report and it confirms several issues. Of primary interest is that the proper stability information was not reported to the skipper. I cannot imagine Gary traveling into what he knew to be an area of heavy freezing spray with a boat on the edge of stability. The thing that has always bothered me is why they never took measures to get rid of the accumulating ice. All I can think is that with the wind on the starboard side it was providing a false sense of stability by not allowing the boat to roll completely from the weight of the ice. In other words, the wind was pushing against the side of the boat so hard that it could not roll properly thus hiding the actual weight of ice gained. When they made the turn to Sutwik Island the wind was now on the bow and the boat was free to list to starboard due to the weight of the ice. That list was enough to cancel any starboard freeboard and eventually led to the down-flooding and capsize. By the time they realized what was happening, it was too late to clear the ice and their only task should have been to get off the boat. I read Dean's narrative of the events and with all respect to him and the others, I find the chaos he described to be disconcerting. I never would have thought that events he described could happen on a well run crab boat. There are 23 technical recommendations and 10 administrative recommendations in the report. Most will be agreed to, a few actually implemented and rest will get a lick and a kiss. Of primary interest to me is that the USCG license masters of CFVs in the 100 - 200 gross ton range. Currently anyone with the money to buy a boat or the skill to dock one can drive a commercial fishing vessel. No experience required, no marine knowledge, nothing about trimming or stability. The 'we always did it that way' school of thought no longer works.

I can understand why the interior of this vessel is the way it is. Working conditions have totally changed over the years for the men on board and so the design of the interior has taken this into account and no doubt to encourage those men to respect those facilities and places of rest provided by its employers or ship owner. And obviously the ships are bigger so more room to facilitate these massive improvements over smaller vessels. As they are at the end of the day still a working ship so need all the space for gear engines storage etc and in ship designs of old this took priority over the crews living conditions. All this has effects how the crew rest and inturn effect productivity so again this is why conditions have also improved. More productive the crew are less mistakes are made so more money they bring in for the company and the crew them selfs depending on pay terms. Nice vessel and all that but I don’t really agree with such large vessels if they do damage to fish stocks. Yes we all have to make a living but why destroy the thing that provides you with a living in the first place.

I fished those waters year round and lost many friends in the 70's. I am now nearing my 70th year on this planet and it still hits me hard when I hear of events like this. Lost relatives back in the days of schooner fishing on Georges as well. God bless the family and friends of the man that did not make it home with his shipmates...Sorrow and sadness for the loss of such a beautiful vessel as well. Nothing better than a Novi built anywhere! Below is a poem from The Fishermen's Memorial and Record Book published by Proctor Brothers 1873. It was originally published in The Cape Ann Advertiser and attributed to James Davis Esq. Half Mast High Half-mast high the signal floats! She's coming in from the sea, Some sailor of her crew is gone, Who may the lost one be? The landsmen gaze as she draws nigh, With trembling sad concern, The vessels name to learn, That comes with colors half-mast high. Half-mast high the signal floats, Who shall the mourners be, That soon must weep sad tears for him They never more shall see? Ah! many may heave the anxious sigh, For fear that it may prove, To be the one they love, For who the flag floats half-mast high. Half-mast high the signal floats, Oh! can it be 'tis he? It speaks relief to other hearts, But is a knell to me. The word that names him who doth lie Low in his watery urn' And never shall return; For mine the flag that floats half-mast high. Half -mast high the signal floats, Thus honored let them be. Who perish thus that we may live On treasures of the sea. For them the hardy brave who die, And find no other grave But the deep ocean grave, We'll raise the colors half-mast high.

Yes indeed. The place I used to buy fish at was run by a man who had worked on board fishing boats. He said to me that it was not only a dangerous job but also a most unhealthy one, for you were subject to the harshest climate, working 10 or 12 hours a day on an open deck. If anyone cares to see the actual deckhands and deck boss at work, pulling king crab gear just a few months before the tragic Jan 1 2019 sinking there is a great wide angle deck video at the channel called “Salmon Slayer.” May the Lord have mercy on all those lost and their surviving loved ones.
