Brilliant analysis. I've been a fanatic Fassbinder fan (and now fledgling scholar planning to write my doctorate thesis on Berlin Alexanderplatz). As others in the comments below have mentioned Ozon's recent adaptation. I loved and wonder if you've seen his earlier adaptation of RWF's play "Water Drops on Burning Rocks" ? It's my understanding Fassbinder wrote the original Petra Von Kant based on his affair with Gunther Kaufman. I've always wondered about the choice to make the change. Fassbinder remains repellant, fascinating, anarchic, empathetic, I feel his films become more and more relevant.

Watching the home movies of Montgomery Cliff (12:00) for the first time, I was struck by how much the handsome features of this Hollywood sex symbol resembled a future movie star: Tom Cruise. Like many, I consider Tom Cruise to be a gullible twit but there's no denying his photogenic appeal to the "Fairer Sex". No wonder TCs agent and Hollywood swooped on him; any guy that resembles Montgomery Cliff is guaranteed a box office success for Hollywood.

What's interesting is that Brooks Clift, disagreed with LaGuardia's book was was full of lies and assumptions. Brooks wanted Patricia's book to be the one and only bio of his brother, which is why he worked closely with her on it. In the she end, she screwed him over sadly. What people will do for money is sad. I never trusted her book nor LaGuardia's. Robert Clift, Monty's nephew, directed a amazing Monty bio which covers all that in "Making Montogomery Clift". It's on Amazon and he even interviewed Patty's before she passed. Great documentary, highly recommended.

My father and I sat troughou this in a theatre in the 1970s when it came out. I fell asleep. All these years later I am interested in finding and watching it. My father is gone now but I recall watching this with him and also seeing The Ring Cyle and going to Graf Bobbys in Toronto, an authentic German restaurant long since closed. He read German history and philosophy every night. Grappling with the war and German identity is and was important for many Germans after the war. Elias Canetti said something to the effect that being German after WWII was as painful as being Jewish had been previously. And is still today, one could argue.
