The plan for this channel is to add videos useful to new whitewater kayakers in the Washington DC area. These will include how to find put ins, planning runs on the Potomac, safety information, and descriptions of features at various water levels. I am new to the sport, and documenting my progress- videos are not paddling instruction, make sure to get lessons from a professional. I recommend Calleva's classes.
Kayaking the Lower Big Sandy at 5.3 Ft.
Section: Lower Big Sandy Creek: www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/view/river-detail/2331/main
This video covers the classic Lower Big Sandy Creek run from Rockville, WV to the Jenkinsburg bridge. We trained throughout March and April, focusing on creeking with Calleva's river school. This LBS trip was the culmination of that training, which focused on boat control and lower volume, higher gradient whitewater.
Please enjoy this run, and feel free to reach out or comment with your feedback. As always, remember- safety comes first. Massive thanks to Calleva, check out calleva.org/river/

7:48 Insider info, I'm a river shore hiker, the "bent tree" to the right of screen, in that area are the "Ear Boulder", the "G Pothole Boulder" and the "Cave Boulder" all in that right hand shore boulder area near that "bent tree" at Dartmouth Rapids, Ohiopyle. For river shore hikers looking for the most beautiful "eroded river shore boulders" the Dartmouth Rapids river shore, near that bent large pine tree, has some of the most striking erosion river shore boulders in the whole park. (I've got videos how to hike there, but kayakers who stop there could conceivably stop and see them.)
Thanks for sharing, Chuck! That is great info!
5:00 That's "Mike the photographer" (16 years vet at Cucumber Rapids boulder field). He works for "Ohiopyle Photography". Shout "Hi Mike" to troll him.
He’s a solid dude, he once helped out with a pin in my group!
Horseshoe on the kern?
This is Horseshoe Wave, which forms at the bottom of Horseshoe rapid, Maryland Lines, Great Falls, Potomac River! I’m not good enough for the kern lol
Were you there this past weekend? I was out there on Sunday with a crew. Hot as hell but a good day.
We were there Wed - Fri, headed back on Saturday morning. Yeah it was really hot, bummer we didn’t overlap!
Yesterday i fell out of my raft at the falls of the nantahala river in north Carolina
How’d it go?? Hope you had fun!
Pain foll 😢 😪😨
I didn’t hit any concrete! I just spent a minute in the washing machine :)
I could spend all day going through those
You can, and it’s encouraged! The boat conveyor belt really ties things together - run after run and no portage!
Big water is no joke!
Good times! I didn’t step up to Comp though, next time…
Dang!! I stay to the left on that one!
One of my favorite places. Comp channel is outstanding
Love all of your videos my friend.
That means a ton, thank you for saying so!
Me downstream watching this: “Chris is going to need a bow rescue”. But then you didn’t!
Hahaha I definitely don’t have a hand roll so I would have needed one tho!
Sick. Is it offutt?
This is Maryland Chute around 3.2!
Chris Thank yiu for your helpp thus weekend if you ever disciver how your boat got moved let me know. Thanks again you embody the characteristics of why I love the kayakking community.
Hey! I’m glad we ran into one another, keep shredding- I’ll let you know next time we head to the Yough, please do the same if you’re ever over near the Potomac! Yeah, I am still puzzled by how my boat managed to walk down the path on its own… but nothing was stolen, so there’s that…
You're going the wrong way, supposed to go with the flow, not against the current
Another great video!
Nice. Looks fun. What time of year was this, no dry top?? Was the water warm.
Yeah we had a few unseasonably warm moments this spring, this shirt was filmed in April! I also run hot, sometimes I’ll double down on rash guards or wear a shorty if I am confident I won’t swim.
This video was straight up amazing. From the story telling to the kayaking, it was all interesting. I’ve been watching your videos since 14 subscribers. With the quality you put into your videos, you will get tons of subs in no time. I was also wondering if you could maybe put out a short video of how you go about fixing a kayak.
Dude! Thank you for the support! I’m so glad people find this useful, it’s a joy to make. I will totally make a video about fixing a boat when I learn how! Hoping to do some plastic welding soon.
Awesome! Thanks.
Nicely written narrative intro. One of the best videos I’ve seen of LBS. Wonder Falls was a big drop for sure.
Thank you! Much appreciated.
On double hydraulic I went straight through the hole and I was on a duckie and my brother managed to somehow tail squirt his duckie in it
Haha that’s amazing! Way to go 🫳💪
Keith's line across the current was beautiful on that bit where you got intimate with that rock Nice run. Maybe I'll get there one day
Hahaha yeah he nailed that, I totally misjudged the speed of that tongue and paid for it! Hope you get stateside again soon so we can tear it up… or I’ll need to come check out the UK scene!

Hey, Nice Video! Question: I Live near Algonkian Park. I'm new to kayaking and use a dagger zydeco. I've only paddled between goose creek and algonkian. It's nice but not very exciting. Are there any good stretches around here for beginners to get some Class 1&2 action?
Check out the Zero to Hero class with Calleva!
@@potomacbeater If only I had $1000 to spare
Totally fair. I hesitate to point new boaters to specific stretches of water if I don’t know their safety / river knowledge. It’s easy to have a terrible day without these components, which is why I advise instruction. That said, you can read about the Seneca Breaks below Violettes Lock, and Riverbend Park!
love your video but please use 4k, I like to watch it on big screen.
Yeah sorry about that, this footage disappeared from my SD card so I had to download it from the cloud for the video :(
@@potomacbeater oh no problem man hehe next one 💪🏼 see u in the river
Dude, your videos are always improving. love it and keep it up
Thanks so much!
Well done Chris on another solid LY instructional. Always good comments and advice for the intermediate and advanced paddler.
Thank you, it means a lot! 🤝
"Three Sisters" because of the three rocks in a row. And "Gates of Hell", I call it. Whatever. I have run this river a bunch of times, but you introduced some moves that I did not know about.
Entertaining and lots of good info as always. Thanks for sharing.
So glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. Would love to paddle with you sometime.
Let’s do it! Send me a note on Instagram!
Ran this last week. Such a fun run!
Finally some proper tune for an awesome day!👊🏻
Great video! Did it last weekend in my Antix and was glad for the low level in a half slice
Nice! Way to tackle it in a slicey boat!
Good video!
The upriver brace is how I've set up a bunch of swims! Cheers to the solid roll
Amazing !!!!
Nice diagonals looks like a squirt boaters dream
Great little rapid!
Great music choice for cutting class!
My backyard. Blessed.
Can’t wait to get back in June!
I love that kayakers aren't territorial, like ocean surfers. I think maybe the difference is that surfers hang out in a location, and the space out there is a limited resource. Good waves are even more a limited resource. Surfers don't want to lose chances for good waves to a newcomer. Kayakers, on the other hand, have standing waves. Everyone can hang out at a good wave, and have a more or less equal chance at it. Also, kayakers tend to voluntarily head down the river to find new opportunities, leaving the standing waves or other stationary features at a location behind.
hit the nail on the head. great things discussed
Thanks Mr. Sam!
Great video dude, you hit the nail on the head. Been paddling for almost 25 years and it use to all be about styling your lines. I learned that you would didnt step it up till you are able to style your runs. The only beat downs we ran into often were intentional beat downs to practice surfing and now unintentional beat downs have became the norm. Some of the stuff i see on the river now scares me not gonna lie
Thanks for sharing your experience! Amazing how an article from 12 years ago is still so relevant today.
Totally agree with competence to confidence. Agree and disagree that people don’t take style seriously. As shown in the article, pat and Isaac take it seriously, many respected paddlers do. For some it’s a discipline to be sharpened. For some it’s just a test of guts. It makes sense that it attracts different types of people. It’s a sport that at its best combines all the elements: skill, style, and massive balls. Cool concept and video
Great perspective, thanks for sharing!
Can I find this video of the boaters on the green?
I put it in the video description
Super interesting amigo. You’re tapping into it. Please do more of these? I’m in my 40’s, been paddling since age 19. I only paddle solo in class 2/3, and easy safe class 4. Hard moves on “safe” water by myself is my jam. The solo whitewater paddler receives shameful confused looks. It mostly makes sense to me and avoids a lot of the stuff you mentioned in this video.
Thanks for the context! I definitely will do more- if you have reading suggestions, please send!
There is so much here to unpack and alot that I recognise also having switched countries as a newish intermediate paddler and had to work out a new paddling scene (people and rivers). Also think you could write chapters on what makes a class/grade... I think its a very coarse measure. For me it's pretty immaterial what 'grade' it is (within reason). So obviously there are some rivers I wont look at at all yet, maybe/likely never will. Others Grade 2/3 I will look at the river on the day and decide if you can do it with your skill level and the group you are with.
Yeah there is a lot to consider! What would you say are some cultural differences between US and UK paddlers?
@@potomacbeater without wanting to start a thesis.... I'd say the same differences we'd experience in wider life.
Gotta get your boating license!
Very informative. Thanks for the effort you put into it. One of the first things that I learned also was not to scream as you go over.
Glad you liked the video!
Good practice for UK paddling
Yeah I’ve heard the UK is very creeky!
Great boatin dude!
Thank you, and thanks for watching! That is a great run.
I just want to say I really appreciate this video and the commentary as a person who has only been doing whitewater kayaking for a year ( but Ive got a good roll on both sides and I’ve been told I apparently have good technique and water reading skills 🤷🏼♀️) I like watching these videos that are not just by super experienced paddlers on class 5 rivers so I can learn the visualization as well. And you also are saying to my what your seeing and doing well and not so well. AND. I’m a PA resident so maybe I’ll actually make it on this river someday.
I’m so glad you liked it - this is exactly why I started the channel! Don’t hesitate to comment or reach out if you have feedback / thoughts to share! SYOTR!
getting out of your boat for safety purposes can not be wrong. Good practice. You might discover some error, or rearrange things, or whatever.
That’s kinda what I thought (as long as I don’t become another victim by falling in or something)
