Vorshlag 1989 Camaro IROC Z/28 - Stock baseline lap, MSR 1.7 CCW - Sept 6, 2024
This is our second attempt to get a "Baseline Lap" at MSR Cresson 1.7 CCW in this 1989 Camaro IROC Z/28. We bought this car in July 2023 but in Summer 2024 started going through some old maintenance items and upgrades. The Hoosiers it came with were 20 years old, so some newer Falken RT-615K+ tires in 315/30R18 size were added on Corvette 18x10.5" wheels. This Camaro had an L98 5.7L V8 with an LT1 intake, a T5 transmission, and numerous other upgrades from 2004.
Our first test attempt in July was less than ideal - we didn't even try to street drive the Camaro, so when we took the out lap it was obvious the front wheel bearings were done. After bringing the car back we replaced those, an alternator, then changed the seat and made a new seat bracket, to fit Terry's driving position. We built a harness bar and added newer harnesses to the Camaro, then rolled the rear fenders.
Finally made time in September to make this Baseline Lap on the same day we were picking up Trigger, our LS550 Mustang that runs 1:13's out here on Hoosiers. Well the Camaro had a few small issues, like rear tire rub and a funky pedal spacing that Terry never got a hang of - to be able to smoothly downshift this combo would require some pedal changes (the brake and gas pedal were about 4" different in height).
So ignore the un-smooth downshifts, we weren't trying to set any track records here. Just wanted to get a good baseline for lap times on a modern 200TW tire before we dive into major suspension, chassis, brake, EFI, and driveline changes. We will come back on the same tires (or something similar) after these changes and we can compare the lap times. Thanks for watching!

This was our 7th dedicated track test for our LS550 Mustang swap car we call Trigger. This car has an HPR built 454" LS7 making 646 whp on 94 octane pump, well used 335/345 Hoosier A7s, our standard MCS RR2 coilover suspension from Vorshlag, a little bit of aero, and a Haltech R3 Nexus EFI system. It is also a fat piggy - weighing a new record high 3617 pounds without driver a week earlier. On ...

This was our second event in our shop LS550 Mustang we call Trigger using the twin 90mm throttle body / CID intake on our HPR 454" LS7. With all of the bugs worked out, and the plenum completely rebuilt at the shop, the car had ZERO issues and was much improved over the SCCA TT event we tested the new setup at a week before. This was the hottest Time Attack event of 2024 with temps touching 104...

What a difference a year makes! Last year we were fighting low oil pressure, and had no aero or traction control at this exact same event in August. In 2024 we also made a bunch of changes right before this event, and I entered Trigger with more power but ZERO testing. This SCCA Time Trial became an extended test session for us, chasing bugs and fixing issues. After a change to a giant CID inta...

While testing two other cars we had the Darkhorse also at MSR Cresson, so I took some laps. No new personal best, lots of mistakes, but the best lap we have run in a long time. The driving could have been better - a 1:18.8 predictive was flashing up - but I just botched the lap. I tried again in a later session, with a decent lap 1 and was "in the window" for the tires for lap 2, when the check...

    help me understand why PSIA for crank case pressure? does that mean anything below 14.7 (@ sea level) is actually a vacuum? Am I close? or way off?

    • @Vorshlag
      @Vorshlag Před 2 dny

      Yes, anything below 14.7 psia is vacuum. This has a 4 stage dry sump so the mild vacuum the crankcase sees it normal, and beneficial with a dry sump oiling system.

    Outstanding. That car is a bullet. I do have a question. If you had went to the weight savings lengths that you did with Trigger, how competitive or close would your 2011 S197 chassis be if you were willing to “cut it up”, as you said back in the day. Maybe even adding a built Coyote.

    • @terryfair7713
      @terryfair7713 Před 14 dny

      We haven't really lightened this S550 much beyond stock, after we added in the cage and some other heavy duty items. It is a fundamentally better chassis than the S197 due to the rear suspension improvements, too. We ran the S197 2011 Mustang GT in TT3 class where we had a strict power-to-weight ratio that was about 9.5 pounds per hp. The Coyote engine could never make 646 whp without a turbo, and even then it would be heavier and less reliable (heat). Apples to oranges...

    • @Vorshlag

      On the S550 rack there are two connectors. One of those is the power harness, and we buy a ~$100 F150 harness for that. The other is the control harness and we used a harness from Cortex. We cover all of this in our S550 project build thread, starting in the last post on this page and following later in the build: www.vorshlag.com/forums/forum/vorshlag-motorsports-discussions/vorshlag-project-cars/7152-vorshlag-s550-s650-mustang-development-2018-gt-2024-darkhorse-trigger?p=58881#post58881

    • @Vorshlag
      @Vorshlag Před 2 měsíci

      Ford finally figured out the reverse hat rotors for the 14" brake was a BAD idea and the later S550s (2022-23?) had a normal rotor, so you can source those instead.

      @@Vorshlag Thanks for the reply. I ordered a set of "normal" vented 14" rotors from the S197 Brembo Kit. If you offset the calipers right with washers/spacers on the S197 bracket, apparently that can work. I'm going to try it and see what happens.

    Should one ever do his own roll cage?

    • @Vorshlag
      @Vorshlag Před 6 měsíci

      Well it depends on your skill level and tools on hand. Making a roll cage from scratch is a HUGE task, and not one to be taken lightly. Installing a "cage kit" that is pre-bent / pre-cut is a lot less work, as we showed here, but it is by no means "easy". It is still a big task with lots of room to fail a track inspection. The goal is to end up with a safe, well built, well engineered and properly welded roll cage that meets or exceeds your series / class minimum requirements. Failing a cage inspection is a big mistake that could entail "cut it all out and start over", so keep that in mind when thinking of paying an experienced shop to install a cage vs "making it yourself". :)

So, 3mm is what you shoot for on tire/strut clearance min. Thx!) Question for you: My 305 NT01s stick out a bit past the edge of my 19x11s. So my tire rubbing the strut is my limiting factor. How close do you think I can set that tire to the strut and account for the tire deflection under load?

    • @Vorshlag
      @Vorshlag Před 8 měsíci

      You are correct, for the current NASA mod factors are 1.0 vs 1.6 for many of the 200TW. But in practice (and we have tested this also) the RT-660 is a DISTANT 2nd place to the A052 and RE71Rs.

  • @ClaytonYatescarenthusiast
    @ClaytonYatescarenthusiast Před 8 měsíci

    Thanks for doing this. Too bad they couldn't just throw 200 on the dang tires. We have all the 200 tw tires. Falken, yoks, nankangs crs v2, re71rs and then you have less than 200 which is a different class in most cases. These need to either be 200 tw or faster than a gy3r to be a better option. Unless not competing then doesn't matter. How do you think this tire would compare to a 3r? From what I saw here the the rs looked slightly faster than a052 but tire testing is such a difficult thing. Again thanks for doing this.

    • @Vorshlag
      @Vorshlag Před 8 měsíci

      Probably very similar to the Supercar 3R, but maybe a tick faster? Ford went to great lengths to have the Trofero RS made in these 2 sizes for this one car. Even if it was stamped "200TW" there are minimum numbers of sizes and diameters to be legal for many series that have 200TW limits. This tire is made in exactly 1 diameter and 2 widths. :/

    • @ClaytonYatescarenthusiast
      @ClaytonYatescarenthusiast Před 8 měsíci

      @Vorshlag this tire is going on a few supercars as well. Some new sizes coming. Not sure if it would have helped due to availability of the supercars and if tire rack is even going to carry the other sizes. If they do still probably not enough sizes to make the cut. For me he 3r is about .7-.8 seconds faster than yok on Buttonwillow cw13 and 1.25 at umc outerloop. That's on c7z giving faster session to yok. So might be a bigger gap. Pace range, 1:45 to 1:47 Buttonwillow, 2 flat to 2:02 umc If this tire ends up being faster than 3r it would be fastest none slick non hoosier available. Any plans to throw the Nankang CR-S/CR1 into the mix? NASA classifies it the same as the Yokohama A052 and I am hearing it is nearly as fast (plus it has some additional sizes Yokohama does not).

    • @Vorshlag
      @Vorshlag Před 8 měsíci

      Everyone I know and trust that has legit tested the Nankank CRS V2 against the Yokohama A052 has quietly put the Nankangs up for sale... if that tells you anything. I have felt ZERO desire to test the Nankangs, and kept beating everyone that did run them in my TT class last year. I was on the A052...

      @@Vorshlag Thanks for that insight! The Nankangs are interesting as they make some very wide sizes whereas Yokohama stops at 315. And to your point, there is a reason the Yokohamas go out of stock often and the Nankangs don't!

    Have you tried the Supercar 3r’s? I’m currently running the 3’s on my Cayman, but thinking about switching. Also been looking at the rt660’s compared to Supercar 3’s. Take care

    • @ClaytonYatescarenthusiast
      @ClaytonYatescarenthusiast Před 8 měsíci

      The 3r is a lot faster. The rt660 last longer. The nankang crs v2 would be a great middle of the road tire if you're looking for something that last longer than 3r. The crs is just as fast if not faster then a052. The a052 is great for less experienced drivers imo it's easy to drive. I'm not saying anything besides it helps less experience. It's just as capable in professional hands too.

      @Vorshlag Před 8 měsíci

      Supercar 3R is 100TW and not legal for any of the "200TW" series we run, so we have not tested with those. I suspect the RT-660 will be a tick slower but wear much better.

    Using the Haltech traction control? What are your feelings about it, does it work well, do you fell "it" and if so did it fell limiting as some of those systems does? Looking at the video it seems to be working well.

    • @Vorshlag
      @Vorshlag Před 8 měsíci

      Yes, the Haltech traction control was added by RMS right before this test. I could feel it in one corner but the TC was triggering far more than I realized. I need to go back and test with fresh tires to see if it triggers as much as it did here...

    I tried to tighten the top nut with an impact and the shaft just spun with the bolt, and when I drive the car, the top nut becomes loose... any solution to this?

    • @Vorshlag
      @Vorshlag Před 10 měsíci

      Could be your technique - it is hard to describe this even with the video. It's something you have to hear and feel. If you have tried this and it keeps coming loose, replace the Nylon locking top nut. Make sure to get the right thread pitch and diameter. Nylock nuts can only be used a few times before the Nylon ring is deformed too much to hold. You can also try a drop of blue Loctite. But if you drive around long enough on loose top nuts that WILL hammer out the Teflon lining on the spherical. No amount of tightening will fix that then. The top mounts might need to be serviced at that point. Reach out to us on our email (on our website) and we can get those turned around for you for minimal cost.
