Artist VS Craftsman - A career choice in Drumming
The terms "artist" and "craftsman" often overlap, but they traditionally emphasize different aspects of creative work. Here are the key differences:
1. **Focus of Work**:
- **Artist**: An artist is often seen as someone who creates primarily for self-expression and to convey ideas, emotions, or concepts. Their work is usually driven by personal vision and innovation.
- **Craftsman**: A craftsman (or craftsperson) focuses on the creation of functional items with a high level of skill and technique. The emphasis is on the quality and precision of the work, often following established traditions and methods.
2. **Purpose**:
- **Artist**: The primary purpose of an artist's work is often aesthetic or conceptual. It may not serve a practical function but is valued for its beauty, emotional impact, or thought-provoking qualities.
- **Craftsman**: A craftsman's work is usually practical and functional, serving a specific use or purpose. While it can also be beautiful, its utility is a significant aspect.
3. **Creativity vs. Skill**:
- **Artist**: Creativity and originality are at the core of an artist's work. Artists often seek to push boundaries and explore new ideas.
- **Craftsman**: While creativity is important, a craftsman places a strong emphasis on skill, technique, and mastery of materials. Their work may be more about perfecting and refining existing forms and methods.
4. **Process**:
- **Artist**: The process for an artist can be more open-ended and exploratory. The journey of creating can be as important as the final product.
- **Craftsman**: The process for a craftsman is often more structured and methodical, focusing on precision and repeatability to ensure high-quality results.
5. **Training and Tradition**:
- **Artist**: Artists may have formal training, but many are self-taught or develop their style independently. They often experiment with different mediums and techniques.
- **Craftsman**: Craftsmen typically undergo formal apprenticeships or extensive training in a specific craft. They adhere to traditional methods and standards of their craft.
6. **Value**:
- **Artist**: The value of an artist’s work is often subjective and based on personal or cultural significance, rarity, and the reputation of the artist.
- **Craftsman**: The value of a craftsman's work is often based on the quality of craftsmanship, durability, and functionality, as well as the reputation of the craftsman.
While these distinctions are helpful, it's important to note that the line between art and craft can be blurry. Many artists incorporate elements of craftsmanship in their work, and many craftsmen infuse their creations with artistic creativity.

THE MOST USEFUL DRUMMING CONCEPT! RIGHT HAND LEAD!
Good video. How about an artist and a craftsman? Much like an officer and a gentleman, or a cook and a chef? Perhaps a craftsman is merely a sane artist? And a good one at that... If an artist is a liar then he's more akin to a politician. That is, a con artist. Perhaps the more authentic (honest) the artist, the more he's telling the truth...with his art.
Thanks, Phil, for giving us an intelligent breakdown of the differences between an "artist" vs "craftsman". Is it possible to have a mix of both, or are they opposed to each other? I see myself as more of a craftsman because of my training, & my love for the great traditions of drumming, both technical and creative. I never knew that the word "artist" was associated with a trickster or deceiver, a very interesting take on this word. Keep hydrated there, Phil, it looks really hot there and just doing a lot of walking can be a problem if you don't get enough water/fluids. I made the mistake of doing that once, I locked myself out of my van on a hot sunny day, so I had to walk all the way home & back to the parking lot with my spare keys, the next day I had a huge headache the likes of which I never had before. Peace!
hi bro!!! Yes at times its a thin line. Depending on the person. Ideally a mix of both guided by some intelligence is the key imho!
❤❤❤ 정말 멋져요.어떻게 저렇게 할 수 있는지. 대단합니다❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it my friend 🙂
Phil, you always seem to find the best beaches & nature spots! :)

for sure!
I love your drumming, insights, and approach to life. Also, your jazz videos and how you explain the larger picture is top-notch.
Thank you Robert. Its an honor to have you here :-)
Thanks for another awesome video Phil. You've really got it figured out. 🥁❤️
I hope so! Hahaha. My biggest fear is to live with the thought that I didn't enjoy my time on the kit!
"Your time on planet earth, is limited" So true brother! Stunning video location 🤩
yeah man! It is so beautiful here!
Great stuff Phil. A lot of the stuff that you talk about here is highly applicable to any walk of life, i.e. Wisdom. I'm a bricklayer by trade and I stay outside the system, by choice. I'm tied down with a wife and kids but I endeavor to live by my responsibilities and embrace the choices that I have made, good or bad. All the while I try to be the best drummer that I can be because I love drumming and music. I get paid for it sometimes too. I'm glad I listened to you say these things this morning.
Awesome ma man! Both life styles have the pros and cons:-) Enjoy drumming <3
@@philmaturanodrums Always brother. I'm in it for life. Thanks for helping me on my journey.
@@elvislegg8634 Thank you for writing :-)
Thanks for the vid. Any advice for a newer drummer trying to get my foot in the door of paid work? My skill level isn't great, but I'm learning and feel like I need experience performing to understand how and what to improve on.

@@philmaturanodrums That'd be great if you have the time
Kinda crazy, moving my $5000 drum kit to make $100-$500 bucks.
yeah ...we are all pretty much appalled at our situation. Its the problem of a business when the participants have a great love for what they do. Capitalistic tendencies would be to diminish the monetary value because people want to do it. A tough thing to wrap the mind around.
If I ever got this to tempo and sounding like you did at the end there, I would starve to death beacause I would just keep playing that and do nothing else.
hahaha! I know the feeling! ;-)
Amazing content and facility! Renewing vows with Drums! Again! Thanks Phil! Best!
Thank you broooo :-)🙏
Thanks!

Thanks Phil for another awesome video! You always make me feel like success is possible no matter what my situation is. We'll anyway, back to reality. Time to practice! 🥁❤️
You got it bratha! No worries :-) Well practice never ends anyway haha
How do you hear polyrhythms? Do you hear it as one rhythm? Or do you hear them as separate rhythms where you change your focus to the different parts going in and out?
Great question actually. There are phasas in how we act with any phrase. The initial practice phase where we decipher and work the basics. The second phase where we can begin to fun tion on the kit with it and the third....where we have internalized the phrase and can play it at will with no need to think about it. I have a video thats talks about this if you would like to see it :)
This is the first time I got this. Well explained.
10:16 Trying to emulate Dave and Vinnie has become a sort of pastime for some drummers. I mean, I get it. They're amazing drummers. But get in the practice room and develop YOUR skills. YOUR sound. YOU are beautiful just the way you are! Develop YOUR drumming!
Boy you said it! They dont realize anything great takes effort, And bravery. I see a lot of young players that just don't have that fire to find their own voice. They rather copy the flavor of the month guy. Then discover that years went by and they wasted tons of time. The issue of mentorship and being an apprentice is lost for so many in the west. And the results are what we see in the drumming community sadly.
Outstanding! Reminds me of Pete Locketts Symmetrical Sticking for Snare Drum.
I dont know that book gotta check it out!
Insane drum intro! Great points on life in general... I've ran into a similar cast of characters in my time. Some could cost you your career...even your life.
Thanks bro! hehe. Yeah its pretty whack out there! Gotta get that thick skin vibe happening!
PS, The mental health issues that society seems to have fostered are way off the charts. That's why you have to develop a level of discernment or intuition, that will serve you well as you interact with people, both in person & online. You have to know when to open your heart to someone and when to just walk away. Also, the word "no" is a complete sentence, and you don't owe anyone an explanation when you say no. Phil, you still have the Pro Drum shop hat!!
Yeahhh bro!! hahaha I still have it of course! Gonna use it as long as it lasts! Although it's so damn hot over here sometimes it becomes impossible. Need one with the net in back! haha
