    So the video is about opening and revealing the vintage contents but instead of opening it together you opened it beforehand to make sure everything was there. Defeats the intention so I'm not interested anymore.

    • @GeezLouiseArtist

      That is totally fine, to feel that way. I only opened the outside cardboardbox beforehand. The paints (as shown in the video) are still sealed, and have never been opened. I open those on camera ;) And wouldn't it be a greater shame, to open the cardboard box only to find out it was empty? :O

    The reason they have some paints switched or in the wrong tubes is probably due to them buying them from a supplier. They don't make these paints themselves. These are white labeled paints, which Arteza buys fron a chinese supplier, then put their brand name on them. Giorgione and a brand named Nicpro also use these paints. The tubes at least look identical, so I assume the paints also are. Except those other brands sell them for half the price Arteza charges. Get the Meeden tubes instead. Those are cheaper and much better quality than Arteza.

    Yeah yeah...Gummi arabicum is really nasty, ugly, sticky and ughhhh. Get over yourself, Gummi arabicum is neither toxic nor nasty. Some watercolors include honey, Like sennelier but Winsor & Newton doesn't. Thats why they feel really dry. It's sticky and the colors will rewet just fine again and again. From how you touched the colors, how the swatches look like i guess you're a beginner.

      I was a beginner in watercolor (and am still learning), and when encountering something sticky I don't know what is, the instinct reaction for me at least, is disgust, because I didn't expect watercolor pans to be that sticky. I did survive though, lol ;)

    Sweet video and so cool that as time has passed since this videos debut you know more about this set! I hoped you might have given a gradient to your swatch, but that comes with time and experience. Most natural hair brushes will "fuzz out" when dry but will point after wetting. Viridian (PG 18) is not dark, phthalo green (PG 7) is, lots of brands call pf7 viridian, but its not acurated. These are struded pans, so there is no moist binder in the dryed pans, what probably happened was an accident during the storing or packaging of this particular box

So I checked the information that I could still find (like color names, any other numbers etc.) and wrote to the company's customer service. They were really helpful and together we figured out that it probably was from between 1981 and 1996. They even emailed me two of their old color charts from 1980 and 1999 with information. Maybe it could be worth to try and write directly to Winsor&Newton if you need specific information about that set?

I have since bought many of this type box plus I have 5 of the Craig young very expensive handmade boxes . Ive been watching a lot of product reviews lately, because I like to research the heck out of stuff before I buy them. I can't often afford things, so I save up and buy whatever has the best reviews and works best and is affordable. I've gotten into watercolors, and I saw this set, and I see a lot of mixed reviews. I've been desperately wondering, has anyone tried to use like, glycerin or honey with these to see if that fixes the dry cracking issue? I had seen that watercolor artists will sometimes use glycerin or honey with the "cheap" "dry" watercolors to help keep them smooth, but I'm kind of afraid to possibly waste money that I won't be able to get back. If anyone has tried this, please, let me know if it helped??

    • @GeezLouiseArtist
      @GeezLouiseArtist Před 2 lety

      Honestly, I wouldn't try with these. I tried, after they had dried, but now they are just sticky lol - go and buy a smaller but better set of 12 paints, perhaps the WInsor/Newton Cotman or White nights! :) - That is money way more well spent!

    • @inconspicuous-nobody

      If you're still searching, I can highly recommend _St Petersburg White Nights watercolours*_ as a fabulous quality - but more budget - range. I think many of Arteza products are a triumph of marketing over quality, sadly. It's really difficult these days to work out what's what in amongst the YT "positive reviews" due to people being sent things free for review. Even if people _intend_ to be honest, they're not going to trash something outright in case that brand never send them anything again. And there's always unconscious bias at play imo. There's very few channels whose opinion I trust, and the ones I do are nearly always people who've bought and paid for the products themselves. It's the only way you really get a truly unbiased review, I think...

    Back in the 90's I played around with watercolors for a few weeks and then got distracted and packed the stuff away. I recently dug iT out and lo and behold the watercolor paint brand I bought was Liquitex. I can't find evidence they ever made watercolors. And even though I opened the tubes back then the paint didn't dry and the colors are pretty damned vibrant. Odd, not?

    As a cheap way to get into watercolors, they likely suffice. I remember using cheap/crappy watercolors when I first started 30 years ago, and loved them… then I upgraded and was shocked at how much better quality watercolors could be. That being said, I would never have started if not for my dirt cheap set.

    I bought exactly the same box in the late 1980’s and it still serves me well. The Veridian has separated from the gum Arabic, it will be fine to use. What you’re using for water I use for mixing larger quantities of paint for washes.

  • @Lauraisabelgonzalezart

    I do have the Arteza 24pk of Gouache which I highly recommend for beginners. I'll be 100% honest in saying Arteza isn't the best in quality... they push a lot of people the wrong way with their semi-budget friendly products for the quantity that they give. And I really don't trust those who get all those products for free in exchange for an "honest" review so I rather watch someone who isn't sponsored or an affiliate so I can hear the truth. I don't recommend them at all but I know everyone has different experiences with their products. The only products I'll recommend from them is their Gouache, which I use straight from the tube. I did buy the Metallic Gouache set with the brushes and black mixed media paper so I'm excited to try that!

I was looking into getting the smaller set of these paints my self too see what they were like but after watching I think I’m going to get some different ones as I really don’t like the milky-ness of the paints! Have you tested out the pan version of these paints?

    good video ;-). Good to know that the Crelando watercolors have gotten worse than a few years ago when they had a different tube design. I have the old tubes, and they are not so chalky that it makes a noise when I run my finger over them. But they are a bit more opaque than normal, more expensive watercolor paints and great for a sketchbook.

    What a horrible set of paints! All milky colours so probably also opaque and liable to turn into mud when mixed. The sort of artist is attracted to a 60-colour collection is often the sort of artist whose attitude to mixing is "I already have 60 colours. Why do I need more?" But even then, surely they'd be looking for something more colourful and vibrant than this?

    • @GeezLouiseArtist
      @GeezLouiseArtist Před 3 lety

      Good thing no-one is forcing you to buy them, then! ;) I like to collect art supplies and try them out and yes, they are on the milky side but they are vibrant too. Its a matter of preference perhaps, but to state that people who like variety don't like to mix and experiment, is shallow. I love a 60 set as much as a primary set from a really expensive high quality brands.

    • @theartisticactuary
      @theartisticactuary Před 3 lety

      I said often, not always. Anyway, what I probably should have said is that artists that don't like mixing will be drawn towards 60-colour sets. And if the artist buying this set is one that doesn't like mixing, then my (suspected, not proven) assertion that these will produce mud when mixed won't be a problem to them. Thanks for posting up the video - I've seen enough to know these aren't for me, so that's definitely helpful.

      @@theartisticactuary I have 24 colours set for my son and you're right they are not worth spending money. They are not supposed to be squeeze in pans because they cracks and falling into pieces. I prefer to buy 3 primary colours from artist grade brand than Arteza. From Arteza for practicing smaller set in pans is better choice.

    • @serenityjewel
      @serenityjewel Před 2 lety

      If you took the time to watch the video and thought about buying them, then per your assertion, you must be an artist who doesn't like mixing paints, so the "they" you're talking about, with such a negative tone I might add, is yourself. So you, not they, are looking for something more colorful and vibrant. That being said, the point of art is the product, not the process. Some artists don't like mixing colors, which is fine. Some artist want to control everything from making their own paints to their own paper to their own frames, which is fine. And some artists are in-between, which is fine. There are things we like and don't like, but regardless of what no-name art snobs would have people think, there is no "better than" when it comes to art. Unless someone's art reaches museum-collector level, 99% of all art is going to eventually end up in somebody's garbage heap, regardless of whether they mix the paint or not.

    Your disappointment with the viridian prompted me to look up the history of how phthalo green replaced viridian. Winsor and Newton apparently started using phthalo green before 1940, but the bright green was seen as garishly bright, so people continued to use viridian instead. When acrylic paint came around in the 1950s they realized that viridian just didn't work well in the acrylic binder and phthalo green was used as substitute. Yet this paint box from 1986 still came with viridian instead of the superior phthalo green, almost 50 years after Winsor and Newton first introduced phthalo green to their color range. Another 30 years later and most artists don't even know what genuine viridian looks like anymore, because manufacturers will slap the name "viridian" on phthalo green mixtures now. Only few artists appreciate the shitty little brother of phthalo green anymore. (I'm sorry, viridian!)

      Viridian's low tinting strength doesn't hold up well against other synthetic colours for mixing, but still useful in a pallet with other low tint colours.
