Josefine, an animated opera short film | Trailer
After the success of 2020’s live-action opera short, The Narcissistic Fish, Scottish Opera is excited to present its first-ever animated opera short, Josefine.
This 14-minute film, inspired by Franz Kafka’s last short story ‘Josefine the Singer’ and produced in partnership with Maestro Broadcasting, is directed by Scottish Opera’s resident filmmaker Antonia Bain and composed by former Emerging Artist Composer-in-Residence Samuel Bordoli, with a libretto co-authored by the pair. The soundtrack features 2022/23 Emerging Artist Zoe Drummond, a chorus, and The Orchestra of Scottish Opera conducted by Susannah Wapshott.
By combining the mediums of opera and animation, Josefine promises a new and exciting way to experience and explore both art forms. Josefine takes place in a desert world designed and animated by a team headed by Sophie Bird. Here, a creature’s unearthly voice attracts sprites who are enthralled by it. The piece explores the complicated relationship between the singer and audience and the ever-more-relevant question of art’s place in times of crisis.
With confirmed screenings at the Film Festival at Vienna’s Rathausplatz in summer 2024, as well as other dates to be announced, Josefine is coming soon to a screen near you.

Opera is an art that combines sound and visual, when a person who is not good looking portray that he or she is, it ruins the opera. No one dares to bring this point up. But I think it’s time to be truthful to ourselves. Let’s face it, many great singers do not qualify for the role they play in an opera, because of their looks, including shape.

first time im heard mix bettwen of flamminco and opera was from video game and it became my best sound that ever heard
Interesting. A very vocal performance - so very well sung, and every word clear. But strangely demure, not at all dramatic. Even at the end, the lovers merely hold hands! Later - Dulcamara really illustrates the illnesses his Elisir can cure....❤

What a brilliant idea to produce this video of the Emerging Artists and their work. Informative, moving, entertaining and very human. A small insight into what goes into making opera. Well done all at Scottish Opera and best wishes to everyone of these young people who are truly artists already and not merely emerging.
This is terrific! A wildly paired down version of the Stratford Festival production by Brian MacDonald also produced at Opera Australia. Still terrific. I'm curious if it's actually his production or "borrowed" lovingly. Whatever, it's terrific and well executed!
This performance was directed by the State Opera of South Australia Artistic Director Stuart Maunder who knows a thing or two about G&S. He directed 3 last year (2023) for the State Opera - Trial By Jury (in a courtroom in the District Court), Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore. A great day and evening in the theatre!
I didn’t say it wasn’t wonderful, nor that I disliked it. But look up on this platform “Dance a Cachucha from Stratford Festival” and see the choreography and blocking are the same. I am not doubting the talent of anyone, but it resembles so closely it could be the same production, or a co-production. They say the best ideas are stolen, and I’ve borrowed from that production and others (like Mikado) from Stratford’s G&S collection. But this is very much the same. That’s all.

Thank God for something good coming out of the pandemic ! The sound quality is terrific. .This is the opera I would chose for your first experience. This was Queen Victoria's favourite opera.
