Thanks for visiting my work Dave. Your bird ID could do with some work lol. The bird you thought was a kaka was a tieke (saddleback). The the birds you thought we Robin's were popokatea (white head). Perhaps some time I could take you to see the real maungatautari
Thanks Craig - So let’s use your knowledge to teach others! I’ll add the bird IDs into the video description. Craig or others, Please ID the bird at each of the following video points. 3:56 6:30 8:48 12:06 12:44 16:20

Very cool video all the excitement and all. Willie definitely not slow because he's under cooked ...I'm so proud of him walking out with a fractured ankle.❤
Thanks Anita, it’s a hard one, personally I would have appreciated knowing what level of pain he was in so we could consider all options if need be like taking the easier Wairere track or make up a splint to transfer the weight to it rather than onto his ankle etc. Suspect he didn’t want to seem a burden but yes, he was certainly a good sport and is one tough cookie, we didn’t know (to the point of him driving the car home) that it was actually a fracture. He was wearing his glasses at the off track creek crossing but I literally don’t have any facial shots after that to know when he actually lost them. I’m sure you make a good nurse, take good care of him, all my love, Dave 🙏
16.40 mark are whiteheads calling
Thank u so much, loved this, shame Wiremu (not sure i got his name right?) he is shy tamariki o te whenua, & then out of the blue comes this young pakeha woman in a black singlet bursting with energy ... cannot b scripted ... this deserves tobe seen worldwide
Very astute of you to pick up the irony of that 👏👏👏
Have you checked out the old derelict hut near Lake Rotohokahoka out in the Mamaku range. Not to sure if it's still there, as it's been probably a good, almost 10 years since I was there. I can't see anything about it on topo maps though
Never hiked in there, it looks flat but that’s the sort of off the beaten track adventure intel I’m looking for thanks.
Thanks!
Thankful Tania, that’ll go towards the battery charger 🙏
Hi Dave, at around the 12 min mark, that is a Saddleback or Tieke, they have a really distinctive call.
Also, with the markers, there's a lot of pest monitoring lines/tracks. I go with my Dad every now and then to put out or collect pest monitoring cards to check what's going on. The track we do is about a 5 hour trek, lots of bushbashing involved. And the birdlife is fantastic.
Yes, a saddleback, black belly, orange saddle, thanks for that I just couldn’t think of it at the time.
It’ll dm you about something
Yup saddleback and with the kokako the only two native wattle birds left in NZ. The 3rd wattlebird native to NZ was the huia which was hunted to extinction by Buller.
Actually can you dm me via my instagram outdoorsman_dave as I can’t seem to activate your link 🙏
Great vid Dave I went school with hicks kids back in 80s there family farm runs onto bottom track spent many cubs trips up there

Nice, Did you do the tunnel or windows walk?
@OutdoorsmanDave we walked along the river from the one lane bridge to the train station and back. The ole girl has a hip injury she's getting over so a flat short in walk in the sun to see how she went. Tomorrow we going around Kainui Lake flat but a bit longer see how she goes.

Thanks Graeme, if you love bird sound in the bush then you were going to absolutely love my next video due in a week. The most prolific bird sounds ever on a hike and for good reason that secret will be revealed in the video. Lots of bush teaching tips and philosophy in this one too, I just hope that my members are personally growing as a result. I just see so little value in empty calorie entertaining.
The kaimais are such a underrated location. You have family friendly huts, old school huts and basic shelters. Tracks vary from very good, ok tracks, to ‘what track’. There’s something for everyone, and located close to Tauranga, Hamilton and Auckland. Only done a few tramps up there, but intend to do more.
Yes have summarised it well, you might be interested in some Kaimai Forgotten Five hut history then, a five video series starting with czcams.com/video/kv4JOio0WB8/video.html see description for links to the others. Includes the secret Puketutu, enjoy.
My Great Uncle Willy had the nearest farm to where the crash took place and looked after all the search and rescue people for the duration of the search. His farm was at Gordon. I imagine all the bodies would have been on his farm before being removed. I'm of the view that the wreckage should have just been left there.
Work through the DC3 video list in description and you’ll find one where we took the ridgeline route up (same as SAR in 1963) from what most likely is the farm you speak of. There was only one body intact, the rest choppered out in bags in parts. The wreckage has spread over a few kilometres.
@@OutdoorsmanDave That's interesting. Will have a look, thanks.
Here it is czcams.com/video/ftT2nq6JX-Q/video.html is it the same farm, it’s directly below the crash site. Future videos show more of it.
Well done mate..
Such a remote area, have you been through it yourself?
The track to the right at the waterfall Junction is one of many old logging tracks/roads from the 1960s and 1970s from the te tuhi track
Thanks Brian, have you ever walked it?
@OutdoorsmanDave Hi Dave, if you look at Google maps, you will notice a distinct colour change in the bush north of Ngamarama track, this is where the bush was logged by Ngaroma Sawmills of Greerton 1962 to 1975, (may be others as well), there are extensive logging tracks north, west and south of te tuhi track road, I guess yr salvation hut was built by the logging contractors, they logged south down to the Ngamuwahine and probably across the other side as well, there is on google maps a logging track across a clearing at -37.7759183, 175.9419616, which I guess is very close to yr hut
Great vid Dave. That tent is the perfect colour for a stealth camp, blended in perfectly. I can also recommend the backcountry mashed spuds over the supermarket ones. I find that it better seasoned. The supermarket ones ive tried have been a bit bland. Sweet kitchen setup you had in this one!
Thanks Jarrod, yes I’m very pleased with it all round actually
Hi Dave. Great vid, thanks for taking us with you. Great Barrier is on the list of future trips.
It’s a hiking Mecca, I’m back again soon, might do the Aotea circuit again, for CZcams
Hi Dave, would this be doable with small children??
From each end when the river is low yes, between well, do it yourself first and decide
Once again thanks, aint never been to gb island, apparently it's a 2hr ferry ride (oneway) ... have a friend living there, but doubt that i will be able to visit her. Bush seems sparse, not a lot of ferns, a lot of what must be old, very tall manuka/kanuka? Are u using new GoPro gear? Be good if they came to the party considering yr endorsement of their new tech ... just saying
It’s about $150 flight each way. I’m back again over long weekend. Central Aotea track is awesome, well worth doing, see czcams.com/video/5jtHysc9vf0/video.html for some of that track.
Thanks
Thanks so much Gavin. What did you think of the story?
Thanks four your effort ... impressive bush & waterfalls & of course Salvation hut. Also impressive maori pronunciation ... i would have been lost 10m in ...
Thank you Graeme for sharing your gratitude publicly & yes they are two wonderful sites to visit which quite doable from either end. I’m very happy with the results of this video, it’s been a real shot in the arm for my efforts as you say, given the lack lustre views of my previous 9, so thank you for your viewership 🙏 check out my “Forgotten Five” series for more Kaimai hut intel.
Good old Salvation. Looks in the same state as it was 5 years ago. Popular area among hunters. Nice mission Dave
Thanks Jesse, yes a real pity the state that it’s in. That’s the last of the Kaimai huts that I’m aware of. Do you know anything of its history?
Unfortunately not. When I went there was a log book going back to 1985 that I wrote in
Thanks
Oh wow John that is most generous of you, it’s well invested, Thankyou 🙏
"Nature has a way of looking after itself." Agreed. Thanks for sharing.
You are most welcome. For example the Rena shipwreck, with time, Mother Nature heals herself as if it was part of its design.
Great video. What's a farnow you referred to? Pity about your gopro etc.😢
whānau, but I suspect as a kiwi you knew that!
Thanks, Whānau (Māori pronunciation: [ˈɸaːnaʉ]) is the Māori language word for the basic extended family group.
This video has helped with motivation and navigation. It has helped me get out there, thanks.
Thanks for that feedback, it keeps the purpose of my channel top of mind when it seems my efforts aren’t seen 🙏
Nice vid bro
Thank you Nathan
Been to the hut, but finishing the loop with the water falls ison the list. Have you done the North/South track along the Kaimais? At 3:38 can you tell me what the different color pns on the map mean?
When? Did you find it easy or were shown? Yes but plan to do again once it’s opened up fully.
And I know someone that would like to do the North South track with ya. 😂. Cause I ain't doing it with him! 😂
It’s actually not so bad these days as the Kaimai trust keeps it in good order but yes at > 80 km it’s a bit of a haul. Let’s see how “Stranger Danger II” pans out before committing to 2-3 nights, I’ll be In touch soon 👋
@OutdoorsmanDave I had GPS coordinates for the hut, but didn't make the last part easy in my self.
@OutdoorsmanDave I did the North/south in December over 5 days. But missed going up and over the table top past Kauritatahi hut, so that's now my next weekend mission.
The 4wd track you come on to comes out at the Blade car park, it will take you over to the Te Tuhi roads. Can be a bit slippery in places, but easy to follow. Quads use it for access to the Te Tuhi roads. Worth a walk and some interesting places over that way, you could even do a loop walk if you wanted to.
Was it Blade carpark that I started at then, I did see what I thought might have been the 4x4 crossing Leyland. Any secret hunting huts you could DM me?
@@OutdoorsmanDave Yes it was the Blade car park you started at. Also the track you pointed out on your map where the waterfall track is, that will lead you to the Te Tuhi roads also, and crosses where the 4wd track comes out and turns into a gravel road. You can spend a lot of time wandering around the old roads over that way, and can look down on to the big swamp from one of the roads. 30 odd years ago it was much more open, now very over grown.
@NorthernladNZ You do know a lot, are people allowed to walks those paper roads, anything worth seeing? Do you know anything about a hot spring, DM if you know more 🙏
@@OutdoorsmanDave Yes you can walk those roads, they are inside the park. A looong time ago you could drive up the roads even. Have not heard about a hot spring personally. Lots of roads to explore, can walk up Clay rd over there and then over to Wairere falls. From Clay rd you look out over the harbour etc. There is a lot I have not explored over there.
Thats awesome mate
Yes but what now, that’s all the Kaimai huts 🤔
Thanks
Thank you Herman, it’s well invested 🎥
Good to see you finally got there after our attempt in the rains. You're getting to grips with the new camera nicely.
Hi Peter I actually did mention you in the video about it but in order to cut the video down I accidentally had taken the section out and I had so much trouble with the rendering due to its 4K size that I just didn’t have the heart to find it and edit it back in sorry. I do appreciate our attempt together, can you believe I crossed the river without even getting wet 😆
@@OutdoorsmanDave And here is me telling people what a good bloke you are! Then Im edited out! I was having similar problems with 4k, which is why I dont use it. The files are way to big for my poor old laptop. I almost didnt recognise the river as the same one that we struggled with.
@OAPAdventures I’m still a good bloke, just with crap old gear, except my new GoPro ☺️
Hey Dave, have you ever stumbled across the secondary line off the Woods Mill?
Don’t believe so, might you DM or email me the topo please and I’ll look into it 🙏
Hi Outdoorsman Dave. Thanks for the entertainment. Way better than TV.
You are most welcome, better than Catan?
I love that area, has almost everything. We camp near the river as my partner has bad knees, and sometimes wander up to salvation hut. Took my step son through the swamp and onto the water falls. Beautiful area, now I won't be going, will be too many people 😂😅
Kaimai’s certainly has lots of water sources to camp by unlike say Pirongia. Well done taking your son up Long Swamp, it’s good that people get out for a look, celebrate it, outdoors makes people better ☺️
Hey friends, many have tried to find Salvation and failed but now the secret is out. Check out the hut & waterfalls, let me know if you have been before but please stay safe out there. Only 120 more subs before the channel hit 3,000 - Will you be part of that milestone?
Fare play
Do this and you’ll get another hiking leave pass soon 😆
Just out of interest did you weigh your gear I am trying to get my weight below 14 kgs but its a struggle
Hey John, no but typically my wildcamp gear kit out weighs in at around 18-20kg. 14kg is light, what you upto, a big multi day?
Beautiful hike my friend, shots are amazing!
Thanks Ervin 🙏

Wow, Thats a beautiful bay.
Yes, actually all bays on Great Barrier are quite stunning. I think it’s probably the lack of people around that I just find so tranquil. By all means have a look at the other Great Barrier videos for more stunning landscapes
Interesting little adventure Dave. The Ross Bay track looks like it does just peter out where you got too. Interestingly, there is a house completely surrounded in bush just before you get there. I wonder if the power pole you saw was about where you could walk up to the house from the shore ? Also the other track you found while walking back up also looks like it leads directly to a private house. Maybe the dream was enough to stop your inquisitive mind from going to have a look and getting in trouble ?
I actually think I’ve walked to the Ross Bay lookout not Bay. but the Ross Bay track must go past that building and telegraph pole but probably somebody has removed the junction sign so people don’t take it. next time I’m back I will investigate
I keep dreaming about winning lotto...
I don’t like lotto it’s hope deferred and I think it prevents people actually putting measures in place to become wealthy through investing rather than hoping on a win. I Mentioned you today on my video, I’ve just come out of the kaimai bush, have a guess where I went! yeah sorry buddy I don’t know if you would’ve been able to do this one, a bit gnarly.
@@OutdoorsmanDave Yeah, I should probably consider buying a ticket if I want that dream to come true!
Apparently you increase your chances if you actually buy a ticket. 🙃 I non repairably damaged my GoPro 7 on an adventure three weeks ago. I’ve upgraded to an 11, what are you currently running with gadget guy? Any recommendations on settings and such?
@@OutdoorsmanDave I am very much on auto, except for the white balance which I set to stop the colours changing and ISO max at 3200. The camera does everything else. Thats what I like about the camera. I can just press "film" and not worry too much. I cant think of anything else that I change. Easy!
