Good and bad TOK, Episode 2
In the series “Good and bad TOK” Alexey takes a TOK essay title and gives two examples in response to it. One of these examples is good, the other example is bad. The “bad” example may look deceptively TOK-ish, but it is actually a first-order example that would not be appropriate for a TOK essay, and may result in a loss of marks. Your job is to tell the difference between the two, and to figure out which of the two examples is “good” and which one is “bad”. This may be harder than you think!
Alexey gives his answer at the end of the video, but make sure to formulate your own opinion before watching the answer.
This is the second episode in the series.

IB TOK Explained Ep 4: Why you can't say that “mathematics is certain”

The focus in the 4th episode is the claim that “mathematics is certain”. Very frequently it is an argument that appears in TOK discussions when mathematics is used as an example of absolute certainty, an area of knowledge that has no room for subjective interpretation or bias. Alexey shows why this claim is superficial. The focus here is on mathematics itself - the deductive axiomatic system th...

    "The Upside of Stress" by Kelly McGonigal does provide evidence that supports the value of self-efficacy in a quantifiable manner. McGonigal's book explores how changing one's mindset about stress can transform stress from a negative experience into a positive one. A significant part of this transformation involves self-efficacy-the belief in one's ability to manage and overcome stress.

    I was introduced to the BPS model at a family therapy session for my mum. It was very helpful. There's different variations of it, you'll see on Google - a couple of things that might need adding are "Age" to bio and "Cultural background" to social. Because let me just say in my life and work, those two aspects are definitely factors for everybody and it's interesting but also dangerous when things go awry. And no it's not "ageism" to list that as a factor. Age always has a bearing on things and a context to well being of course - whether we like it or not. And cultural background also presents challenges particularly if for example like in some my life history, you perhaps spend a little too much time with friends who aren't really "friends" from a different cultural background. I'm sure you all understand me there.

    Hi, love your videos, you are really saving me before the exams. Just a small note from a biological perspective - Met homozygotes actually have higher expression of COMT protein. Because of change in one amino acid (valine to methionine) it is much less functional and thus the organism tries to account for this by overexpressing it. But still even though the fact that Mets have more of the protein, its lesser functionality overpowers this and the result is that the overall effectiveness in Mets is lower

    • @layasrileela1470
      @layasrileela1470 Před 4 měsíci

      Use APRILS, A - Aim P - Procedure (including participants and method; i.e. true experiment, correlation study, mixed design, field experiment etc) R - Results I - Implications (basically, conclusion of the study you used, so like what did the researchers of that specific experiment concluded) L - Limitations (so the criticisms of the research study) S - Strengths (what did the study do well? like, i.e. "their sample size was large which enhances generalisability") but REMEMBER - for SAQs, you dont need to include the strengths and limitations. So, just use "APRI" for SAQs and "APRILS" for ERQs :)

    A very good presentation and worthy attempt to resolve the problem of "the social sciences". However at times you seem to use the word "study" as if it can be conflated with the word "science". Of course it cannot. Study is necessary to science, but science is not necessary to study. Take, for example, an artist's study. "Human sciences" would more accurately be described as "human studies", if for no other reason than the fact that the studies themselves can grossly affect what is being studied (and yes I have heard of Schroedinger's Cat, but that is not a gross effect). For example, any so-called "scientific theory" of economics, once widely understood by economists, will affect the way the economy behaves on a macro level. Why? Because economists will implement the theory to "run" (i.e. affect) economies. As a result, yet another theory of economics will need to be created to encompass how these interactions between human theories and economies is affecting the outcome of what is being studied. You see the problem? This is a recursive process, where social "scientists" end up studying their own backsides. One can scientifically study human behaviour, of course, but trying to construct a scientific theory behind the reasons behind that behaviour, i.e.trying to apply science to subjective human experience, necessarily requires unsubstantiated and unverifiable storytelling that can itself affect how the subject behaves. The above does not hold for scientific theories, for example "what happens inside a black hole". They cannot affect the way a black hole behaves. The other difference here is a scientific theory will allow very accurate predictions based on that theory (for example the curvature of light around the sun) where accurate measurements can potentially support or completely falsify the theory. If a theory of human behaviour is not falsifiable, then it is not a scientific theory. Or to put it another way, dreams are nature's way of telling us not everything in human experience has to make rational sense.
