Rooms with walls are a LOT more efficient, so you really made this hard on yourself. A hatchery with a reinforced wall around and a door will produce a lot more chickens for example. In DK1, never build a room without a wall around it.

What you missed is that you can claim the northern barracks quite soon, and when you do you can use the barracks to lead a party to the wizard room to get the bridge.
