Football has been played in England since the ninth century and rugby came about when a schoolboy picked up the ball and ran with it at rugby school around the eighteenth century. Soccer came about because of the governing body trying to rebrand the sport which only lasted one year. So mericans picked up on this name and so called gridiron Football stealing the name.
