I get it but this is the exception and not the rule. He obviously plays bass AND key bass. That’s HIS thing and I doubt the key bass was there in case his main bass failed. It was there because he uses it for different songs. Good for him. Some bass players might have an extra guitar on standby, but no one has a key bass just in case their main axe messes up.

So if you’re a bass player, you also need to know how to play the keyboard? Does a keyboard play need to have violins, trumpets, and a piano on stage too? Just in case?

Would the other option be to have a 2nd bass that has a wired connection always ready on stage or in the wings? It seems relatively valid as an instrument switch solution to any similar situation.

As a guitar player its nice to know all instruments in the rhythm section but for every musician in the world learning the keyboard should always be the second instrument behind your main.
