Long Tube to Shorty Headers - 1967 Ford Mustang Restomod

This fixed my clearance issues I was experiencing with the long tube headers and new AOD Transmission. I like the exhaust tone. It sounds a little more punchy/tight, if that makes any sense. Also the first background songs was flagged so had YT replace it so might be a little loud. Trying to use built in editor to adjust. Sorry about that.

(Re uploaded due to sound issues) Windows were up as I was using a separate mic to record exhaust during shifting but the app I used had the gain too high so sound was garbage. I used sound deadening material all over the inside which is why you cannot hear the exhaust as much in the AOD test drives. The AOD has a different shift pattern than the C4 which means if you want to shift it manually ...

TMI Pony Sport R Interior console with custom SpeedHut Gauges - 1967 Ford Mustang Restomod
Sounded like a mini jet! Did it cool down the engine? I tried a single one 16" with my SBC 350, and it overheated in 10 mins. I replaced my clutch on my mechanical fan and now it barely reaches 200 with a/c. Without a/c I hang around 185-190. I will never underestimate the mechanical fan. These electric fans just don't do it. If and when they do, you have to go through 2-3 sets to figure out what works! Now I do still have my SPAL 16 inch behind my mechanical. I ran a switch to it, I use it with a/c or once the temp reaches 180. It seems to work very well in conjunction with my mechanical fan. Beautiful ride my friend!
Thank you! I actually couldn't stand the noise and ended up selling the electric fan. Got a 5 blade mechanical fan, added a shroud, and have an electrical fan with switch, just in case. Same as you, hover around 185-190. I'm currently adding AC so might need to look for a thinner fan to fit with the condenser and transmission cooler.
@@mando82jr I don’t have a transmission cooler. But my condenser, radiator, electric fan and mechanical fan all fit with my original shroud. I had a dual setup with a 3 core radiator, and it failed miserably! Right now I’m in a sweet spot, and I’m happy with the temps. I’m fine in 90+ degree weather!
Hello, can I get these fir a 1965 thunderbird.
Hi. Thanks for watching. I got them from cj pony parts. They may have similar for different cars. I haven't looked recently.
Do you have to shift it that way to grab 2nd? I have a c4 with a z gate bm shifter. Wondering if i can use my same shifter
I had to get an adapter from b&m to be able to use it on the AOD since the shifter was for c4. The AOD has different shift pattern than C4. That odd manual shifting is called the AOD Shuffle general done when u want to hold any of the gears vs letting it shift on its own
@@mando82jr urs is not a z gate tho, right?
@@yeredfarias7662 no. It was the Megashifter one
What headers did you use? Having issues with getting clearance around aod
Hey, thanks for watching. I had clearance issues with some generic Summit long tube headers also. Swapped out for shorty hedman headers. I have a video on those.
What signals are you using I like that they can be used as fog and signal thanks
Thanks for watching! They are switchback led bulbs
Awesome video. Did you have any clearance issues with the tunnel?
Thank you for watching! I did not. I did have clearance issues with my long tube headers /exhaust. It cleared but was very close to touching the transmission. I had to switch to shorty headers and have the downpipe to x-pipe redone. Probably one of the best modifications I've done. With stock rear gears, it felt smooth but "slow" ... I upgraded to 3.55 gears and it complements the transmission very nicely.
Good work. Where did you buy the separator plate? Did it fit well? Was the thickness correct?
Thank you! It was from cj pony, summit, Or jegs. I mainly checked all 3 for the parts and ordered whichever one had them in stock. Yes. It was right thickness
Awesome car man! Any recommendations on a mechanic here local in El Paso? I have a 66 Mustang that need some transmission work.
Thanks! Quality Transmission on Hawkins did my C4 to aod swap. Ask for Javi.
@@mando82jr how much was it for?
@@christianbarron1418 if I remember, it was under $2k for sure. I had flywheel and n tv cable. They did rebuild of aod w shift kit, install, and whatever else it needed. this was back in 2021
@@mando82jr thanks man!
But can you turn the headlights on and have the white halos work and use the ambers as switch back signals?
Yes. I wired them so the white halo is on with headlights. Then turn signal is amber halo.
How thick is your fan I'm having a issue where my pullies rubbing against the fan
It was a slim SPAL version and even then I barely had enough room. Part number in description. I ended up removing it and using a normal belt driven fan. If I were to go electric again, I'd do the dual fan setup. I think from a ford Contour. Or they might sell kits. This one was too noisy or maybe I wasn't used to it.
Bright but not the right look imo.
Thanks for watching! It does throw some people off. The halo ring and switchback aren't expected in a classic . It's a restomod and they do help my Nighttime driving.
Rookie move , wrap prevents the heat to dissipate therefore it causes premature damage to the tubes
Nicely done. Did you use a lock up or non lock up TC?
I believe it was the normal non lock up. The AOD came from an 89 Mustang.
I have an Explorer, roller 5.0 in my '66 coupe. What trans and torque converter should I look for? It currently has a C4.
I had C4 with shift kit, stock stall converter and b&m megashifter. The AOD transmission is from an 89 mustang w shift kit.stock stall converter and same b&m megashifter. I did update the rear diff to LSD w 3.55 gears. It complemented the transmission very well compared to stock open 2.79 gears.
@@mando82jr yeah, I've got a 3:50 ls diff and I'm afraid that the car will be useless on the interstate.
@@nilla003 not at all. I was worried too which why I got 3.55 vs 3.80. Right now at 60mph, I'm like at 2k rpm. Nice n smooth. (rpms did go up slightly compared to stock diff, but not enough to where it negated the conversion) With C4 and stock diff, engine was screaming at 60mph so much so that I would avoid the highway.
@@mando82jr so you do recommend the swap?
@@nilla003 yes. I have a 351W and it doesn't Rev as high as a 5.0 (I assume), so for my engine it was well worth it. That 4th gear (overdrive) does make it more enjoyable to drive around. If u like manual, u could do a 4 speed or even 5 speed. But I like the automatic and if I want to shift 'manually' , I'll use the b&m shifter to do so.
Hi, i installed my halo headlights but my turn signal isn’t working so i was wondering what wire harness you used for yours drl/turn signals
The halo/turn signal had two separate thin red n black wires that I ran to the lower valance turn signals.
The double din stereo you have inside the TMI console. How big of a screen can that console accommodate without it looking weird? I cannot find any dimensions on that console. Like is it wide enough to fit a 8in screen and still have a border around the head unit?
That one is the Atoto a6. It slides in and just the screen is sticking out, which looks normal. Square in console is about 7" wide by 4.25" tall. The console is made up of fiberglass, so if you needed to, you could trim it to accommodate a larger screen. I actually trimmed the shifter area so that I could fit the b&m shifter.
The Atoto runs on an old android version and is somewhat slow. Think of like a cheap android tablet. If I used it enough, I would get a better version or better brand
Cool, I modded my 2.0 cold intake, borla downpipes catbackskirtz zl1 front cut, black caliper covers. And throttle control sesitivity, better faster acceleration, plus made in germany slighty confusing with coonnection underhood hp increaser mod for $500 bringing extra 60hp, excluding other mods. I just need ro check the total of increased hp and torque, but can say it puuushing person into seat now when u just press that gas!! U should add led behind the front grill. I did like knight rider, and added compressed air horn, sounds like a damn train. Loud af. No sub in trunk tho, thats for teen kiddos. Good job on ur silver camaro. Verry nice. I know this was done a while ago, but I have seen your build before. I kind of whish I would have gone with the Speedhut gauges, butt the classic instruments are not bad. I have a 68, and I am considering going from my C4 to an AOD. I have 289 gears out back, so it's not soooo bad on the highway. But I would like to go with perhaps 325 or 355 gears and a 4 speed. Nice to know I do not have to do a lot to change over from a C4
Thanks. With the stock gears, it felt like a Cadillac... Smooth but took a minute to pick up speed. Now that I changed it to the 3.55 gears, it complements the AOD Transmission very well. Still good on highway.
how are they holding up
So far so good. 👍
hp? top seppit?
Never had it dynoed. These old engines didn't make much hp unless heavily modified. It's fun to drive, tho.
Did you paint the interior the same colour as the exterior? Btw do you have an email or somewhere I can ask you some more questions please
Yes. The interior is painted the same color. As well as the rear quarter panel panels.
I had started a post in vmf forums but haven't gone back to update it. You can DM me there. Or DM me here. www.vintage-mustang.com/threads/second-times-a-charm.1167851/

@@mando82jr That's a gorgeous colour! Are there a lot of flakes in the paint? I haven't ever seen it in person tbh!

Hey, found this while i am researching a cluster to put in. Very nice build btw. Question: is you car a auto or stick ? I have a B&M Mega shifter in my 65, thinking of pulling it and putting it in my 68. O should I just keep the stock shifter? Also how hard was the Speedhut dials to put in? Is the speedo a GPS style? I hate wiring, but I do have a guy who can do it and specialize in classics.
Thanks! It's an automatic. It was a C4 but now AOD. had to get an adapter in order to use the Mega Shifter with the AOD. I have a video on shifting it. I really like the shifter. I installed a different knob. The Speedhut guages were simple to put in. They fit the stock Guage cluster just right. As far as wiring, it uses GPS so just needs power source, ground and illumination source. I have the GPS antenna under the middle of the dash pad. There's more detailed videos I've seen using similar size guages. That's where I got the idea from. I got the SpeedHut ones because I was able to customize them.
@@mando82jr I am using a C4, did you use the Mega Shifter box, or were you able to use the 67 floor setup with the mega shifter handle? I really o not want to use the box, I just want the handle.
@@iamninjak5250 I did not use the box. Just the shifter itself. Before, I had the Hump Hugger console (I think that's what it's called) and just got a different shift boot to match. Currently, it's in the TMI console and I found a custom shift boot on ebay /Amazon that matched my interior.
@@mando82jr One last question lol. I see you have the dual gauge. I like the fuel in the speedo. That way I could put a volt in. Did the stock fuel sender work with that setup, o you had to put in a custom one?
@@iamninjak5250 yes. It did. The fuel gauge itself can be "customized" to different ohm levels for different applications. U can also customize the low fuel level light as well.
You from El Paso?
Yes.
@@mando82jr yeah I saw your car at the taco cabana today it’s a beauty
@@DanielMartinez-it8od sweet! Thanks, man! I usually try to take it out for a drive as much as I can but the heat makes it a little uncomfortable.
whats the exhaust on this beauty?
Flowtech long tube headers. 2.5 inch piping. Generic x pipe. Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. I recently swapped the long tubes for some hedman shorty headers. Sounds punchier, and tighter sound. Still sounds good, imo
Looks good. Not ott
If the taillight lens gets damaged/broken can you easily remove the leds to another lens.?
It would be the same process as if you were to change the lens. The led panel is part of the red lens. Not individual bulbs. www.cjponyparts.com/sequential-led-taillight-assembly-1967-1968/p/TLLED103/
@@mando82jr I know that .What I'm saying is can you take the led panel off of the lens and put it on another lens if you have to.
@@lilorbielilorbie2496 oh. I don't think so. From what I remember, They where glued together. Unless u can find the led panel and unglue them, then re assemble

Nice
Get rid of the throttle controller, get a proper tune, stay away from zzp tunes.
Can I ask why? Are they bad?
@@Orestella throttle control just helps with pushing the gas pedal faster. No real gains. Just butt dyno gains. Zzp hasn't Ben very popular lately. Alot of blown pistons after being tuned by them. Not sure exactly why.
@@mortikia07 is everything else from zzp good?(intakes, etc) have a 2.0 and zzp is a place I was looking at for stuff like that.
Their parts are good, front mount intercooler is a must
@@mortikia07 I bet you a lot of those failed engines are due to running tunes without upgrading the intercooler...a heat issue. The Throttle Controller is great as it allows for faster revs especially when combined with an aluminum flywheel which I have.
I would have saved much of the money spent on cosmetics for a dyno tune. Just what I'd have done.
We did end up getting a mild tune. It's not for track, but it's quick. It's fun to drive.
very nice... high five..
The blue 69 Camaro has a belt driven supercharger, not a turbo. Turbochargers are exhaust driven. Great video 👍👍
Good catch. My bad. I guess I was overwhelmed by all the nice cars. Lol
amazing! I grew up with one but it's still hard to get used to how small these cars are.
hi friend again.how did you replace the column switch wiring?
The turn signal switch thing in the column? That didn't come in the AAW kit so I ended up buying a new one from CjPony. If I remember correctly, you pull it out from where steering wheel goes. There's probably some more specific videos on that showing details.
@@mando82jr Thank you very much. Also, i see in video that you put the wiring outside the engine bay. Why did you do that? is it safe?
?
@@gamwsas I did it for anesthetics. I did not like the look of the engine bay with all the wiring harnesses running through it. More of personal preference and to clean up the engine bay. Take a look at other mustang engine bays and they look like spaghetti with all the wiring harnesses. I tried to keep the exposed wires to a minimum and the ones that are exposed, I wrapped them in that red/black sleeve. Is it safe? Um, they are secured and protected, so I tried to make them as safe as possible.
@@mando82jr thank you :)
Did u have to install those led flashers?

can you show me where the fuse box goes?
You can mount it in the original location. I made a custom bracket and it's somewhat floating right behind the radio /middle dash trim. I can pop out the middle dash trim and stick my hand in there to check fuses.
@@mando82jr do i have to drill new holes to mount it to original location? actually i m restoring the car so i dont know where the original location was exactly.
@@gamwsas I think you might have to. Or I suppose you could use self tapping screws if mounting holes don't line up l. The original fuse box is on firewall in middle of car under dash. If u look under the dash, through the driver side, like if u are looking at your Pedals, look to the right of the steering column, behind a mess of wires, is a small black box with fuses. It's way back there. Which is why I made a custom mount with some metal brackets from Home Depot. Are you using the original style fuse box or thr American Autowire one?
@@mando82jr the car is completly naked. I am using an aaw kit from cj pony parts. I believe its the same fuse box as yours.
